s_baar··on Ask YC: What to do if burned out, and have dozens of deadlines for tomorrow
Sleep or take a shower, and slip into something comfortable. See if you can do it listening to music.

If that fails, re-evaluate your life and introspect how all these deadlines mean that something is ending, giving you an opportunity to either do something better or just give you more free time/sleep.

s_baar··on Life at Wal-Mart
Unfortunately, It's hard to defend Wal-Mart for all the good they do when they insist on lobbying local councils for direct subsidies or tax breaks, often taking money from their small competitors.
s_baar··on A Defense of libertarianism (and response to Zed, etc.)
Real hackers use anarcho-capitalism.
s_baar··on Massive Aircraft Carrier made of Lego, 200,000 bricks, 350LB
Needs anti-aliasing.
s_baar··on Comparing and Contrasting the Great Depression With the Current US Economic Crisis
Austrian BCT ftw! Well, at least China's not going to put up with it. They're grumbling for a new reserve currency, and hopefully that will be backed up by something of stable value and finite quantities.
s_baar··on Ask YC: Let's start a Hacker News book club
Jeez, this sounds good, but if people here are like me then they already have about 5 books on their list that they want to read. I don't know how many would commit.
s_baar··on Clickpass (YC S07) is being acquired
Nice! I love Clickpass. It's so neat and is the one startup I tell my non-geeky friends about.
s_baar··on 10 Most Popular Flash Games of 2008 — Mochi Network
This is a pretty bad list. Most of these are unoriginal and I don't see any of the high quality ones from armor games or xgenstudios.
s_baar··on Auto bailout bill dies in Senate
The banking system isn't solvent if people can lose their money based on competing on-demand claims to the same cash. I honestly don't know why we don't shift to a time-deposit system. It would work nearly exactly the same in every way and we wouldn't need an FDIC as much or worry about bank runs.
s_baar··on [dead]
I'd like to see the Trademark Application for this. Is it public record? I mean, he certainly didn't start this, so where is this claim coming from?
s_baar··on Ask YC: Saving Health Care.
Ruse of solvency. Are they even asking for input?
s_baar··on Australian Internet censorship plan in shreds
What! Stop destroying inner-city kids' dreams! Don't you know that if every kid in America had access to broadband, this country could be competitive in the international marketplace again?
s_baar··on Scarsdale Adjusts to Life Without Advanced Placement Courses
This is good for a number of reasons. One, because everyone agrees that this improves the curriculum and shows that standardized tests can be a handicap even among honors-level students. Scarsdale has courage to be a trend-setter Two, it is a big challenge to CB to get their act together. Some subjects, imo, are better for APs than others. Econ, gov, math, and physics are well-suited, while the english language/lit is pretty much agreed to be the least useful in terms of actual learning. And even the subjects that are best-suited to a test format have their flaws. For instance, CB specifies no definitive textbook for the histories, so you basically need 1 good textbook and a contrasting review book to cover all the material. Even Physics B has it's flaws. Even though the test/lab format works well for the test, NO class ever gets through the last portion on nuclear particles, and there is little understanding of it come test day. Hopefully this will pressure CB to reform.

Also, this could be a good trend considering how exhausting APs are. Colleges look at how many are taken relative to those available, and a chance to be in an "honor's" course without the stress of an AP would be welcome to those feeling pressured to take as many as possible.

s_baar··on UK technology Start-ups to be given £1bn fund
Why not 2bn or 10bn? I wish people would understand that this money will come at the expense of someone else, probably through inflation and a greater debt burden.
s_baar··on Common chemicals are feminising males of every class of vertebrate animals
Unfortunately, India and China's cultures may compensate for this imbalance.
s_baar··on How do you generate passive income?
Prezzle.com still generates payments from Cambrian House. It's a way to send gift-cards without the user just getting an unthoughtful email or to send a message for free that can't be opened until a specific time.
s_baar··on Could VC be a Casualty of the Recession?
I'm not very knowledgeable about this, but from the charts I remember seeing during the Sequoia "buckle-up" PowerPoint, isn't it an undisputed fact that there has been an unsustainable boom in VC? Investment in VC has been independent of it's marginal profitability declining due to traditional deals becoming fewer and the recession in general.

The shift in what is funded is no surprise by now. The only questions are 1)if the new bio/green tech startups will be successful, and what the role for VC will be in other sectors and 2)What will happen to the current crop of VC firms now? As flattering as it is that funding in VC has remained constant, is it still a wise investment?

I don't know what the answer to these questions are, but they're the ones that stick in my mind. On a positive note, at least one stressful part of the Internet startup process is in decline.

s_baar··on Atlas Shrugged Updated for the Current Financial Crisis
This reminds me of the lack of AS fanfiction on the web right now. Someone really needs to rewrite this book once the it goes to the public domain, because there is potential, but so much is lost on her personality quirks and non-native English writing. (Note that the ARI essay contests have NEVER delved into the romantic situations in this book because they really are so contradictory and add nothing).

tldr: I lold

s_baar··on Second Life bank crash foretold financial crisis
I was thinking fractional reserve banking in general, but that is certainly true.
s_baar··on Second Life bank crash foretold financial crisis
Poorly disguised Ponzi scheme... That reminds me of another certain banking system...
s_baar··on Second Life bank crash foretold financial crisis
What isn't wrong with this logic? Any scam calling itself a bank that went badly now parallels real life?

There is no parallel whatsoever; the crisis and these scams have no commonality.

s_baar··on How to Save Ourselves From the Irrational Economy
The title was misleading. It's quite unfortunate that irrational choices can seem appealing when the market is manipulated, and it is even more tragic when it is done in the name of the American Dream and ends up wrecking families' finances permanently.
s_baar··on [dead]
Why can't we downvote submissions again? This is just redundant and unnecessary.
s_baar··on Insider Trading, or Political Persecution?
Isn't that why insider trading laws exist?
s_baar··on The End of Libertarianism: The financial collapse proves that it makes no sense.
Ron Paul, Austrian economists, lew rockwell. It may have been rash to say that people don't respect CATO. However, recently, previous disagreements are now seriously hurting opinions because of the bailout. The main beef with CATO is their connection to neocons and objectivism. Their support for the bailout as a temporary solution matter hasn't helped.
s_baar··on The End of Libertarianism: The financial collapse proves that it makes no sense.
This is near facetious. These aren't "theories" that sprang up overnight like the bailout did. Austrian economists have specifically identified Freddie/Fannie etc. as the agents of credit expansion to the housing sector, BEFORE there were problems.

A total non-sequitir, he dismisses them without even bothering to offer an alternative theory.

Also, it's misleading to reference CATO. No libertarian outside of CATO respects them. Randians are fair game (it IS fun to poke at them), although their mention in this article was more to sensationalize than to add anything relevant to the topic at hand.

Oh well. It seems that those animal spirits area acting up again. It sure is convenient that all government action is supremely rational.

s_baar··on An insider's explanation of the Fannie Mae Meltdown
As a rule, when water flows uphill, the government is intervening. What free market do you know of in which the failure of a firm isn't a boon to their competitors?
s_baar··on Universal Edit Button
Universal... except for the parts of the universe that can't be edited.
s_baar··on The Failure of Cambrian House
I was an active community member at CH for a long time, over a year. The problem that I could surmise from their actions and meetings they posted was that they knew what they needed to do but were reluctant to do it.

They refused to work within the tech community and just tried to attract anyone who had an idea. Instead of going for the people who could execute and have ideas anyway and promoting the "contracting + equity" aspect of the ventures, they wanted to have a hand in every project.

Also, they seemed to have a clear strategy, but just not follow it. They were always hiring, when it probably would have been more prudent to contract out and actually

building the site that was supposed to make them special.

They were always hiring, but no one could figure out why they weren't improving the site like the community wanted. No one could figure out why they looked so busy on the videos, but nothing was ever completed.

s_baar··on Poll: Are Slide and RockYou overvalued?
I don't see what they can do. Thanks for bringing this up, I'd really like to see what other people can make of this.
