I see problems, and I want to solve them.

I like being meticulous, I'm a grafter, and I'm a pragmatist. I like to surround myself with people who are just as or more hardworking and ambitious than I am.

I love getting carried away in the possibilities of a cool new idea.

A programmer by trade, I'm a polyglot: I know lots of programming languages and can tune myself into the nuances of a new language fairly easily. I started coding when I was 12, and my fingers (and imagination) have been on fire ever since.

s0l1dsnak3123··on Introducing T3: Enabling Large Scale JavaScript Applications
T3 sounds a lot like Ember-cli's structure:

- T3 Services -> Ember helpers

- T3 Modules -> Ember components

- T3 Behaviours -> Ember mixins

I've also found that the code I'm writing in Ember is much easier to test because of these abstractions.

Here's a Rack middleware I just wrote based on this article to use with Datadog (and dogstatsd): https://gist.github.com/johnhamelink/cbef04581da5c3dd90be
s0l1dsnak3123··on Software engineers should write
This one million times over.

I did very well at English at school, but failed hard at maths whilst freelancing from home after teaching myself PHP.

I really wish I'd engaged (and was taught) maths in the same way as I did with code - I remember feeling quite annoyed at the way I was being taught maths which was basically "when you see a question asked in this way, you answer it by following these steps". I think if I'd been taught maths through experimentation and having "projects" to solve in the same way I learned to code, I would've been quite a good maths student.

s0l1dsnak3123··on Ruby 2.1.5 Released
Yep, there are also significant performance benefits in compiling ruby for your machine if you're running on bare metal.
s0l1dsnak3123··on What headphones are on your ears?
I have a pair of Logitech UE 9000s - they're noise cancelling, over the ear and bluetooth - they're very comfortable :)
s0l1dsnak3123··on Ask HN: What are your working tunes?
I like to listen to a lot of rammstein. That powerful chugging bass melody and the not-english vocals help keep me motivated.
s0l1dsnak3123··on Introducing Consul Template
I wrote a script to auto-reload HA_proxy if nodes change in consul, now I'm glad I can now retire it and switch to this!
s0l1dsnak3123··on ZooKeeper: Wait-free coordination for Internet-scale systems
I can't speak for zookeeper, but I've been using consul in production since 1.0. I've never had an issue with it - it works great for me! I've written a ruby gem to interface with it's API called Diplomat (here: https://github.com/WeAreFarmGeek/diplomat) and a whole bunch of ansible scripts to setup checks for postgres, nginx, etc.

s0l1dsnak3123··on Tech Job Scotland
I'm a Scot, and lived in London for a few years. I had the exact same experience in reverse - if you're not from England and decide to live in the South East of England, prepare to get slagged. I now live in Glasgow, the city which has such a bad and undeserving reputation, and despite my posh-scottish accent, I've not had one issue with anyone I've worked with.

From a business opportunity perspective, I can say quite confidently that the Scottish startup scene is growing very nicely, and there are a lot of really cool companies coming out of Edinburgh in particular.

s0l1dsnak3123··on Ask HN: How Did the Outage Affect You Personally?
It was awful, don't let it happen again.
s0l1dsnak3123··on Lock Picking – A Basic Guide
I once had to break into my own house, I used a paint roller handle. It took me about an hour and a half, and was very painful, but I managed it :)
s0l1dsnak3123··on Ask HN: I actually need a job now
Totally disagree with staying outside of London. I'm in Glasgow, and there is an emerging growth of trendy Scottish startups (I'd like to think my company fits within that bracket too, haha) who are using some great technology.
