I see problems, and I want to solve them.

I like being meticulous, I'm a grafter, and I'm a pragmatist. I like to surround myself with people who are just as or more hardworking and ambitious than I am.

I love getting carried away in the possibilities of a cool new idea.

A programmer by trade, I'm a polyglot: I know lots of programming languages and can tune myself into the nuances of a new language fairly easily. I started coding when I was 12, and my fingers (and imagination) have been on fire ever since.

s0l1dsnak3123··on Show HN: Hatch – A modern project, package, and virtual env manager for Python
I've stopped using any other virtual env managers than asdf[0]- it has one simple API for pretty much everything.

You can define a .tools-versions file in the root of your project, which lets you install the correct versions with a simple `asdf install`. We even use this in CI for zero-config language version upgrades.

The situation is an order of magnitude worse in the UK.
s0l1dsnak3123··on Learnings from One Year of Building an Open Source Elixir Application
Let's not also forget that lots of projects people are using Phoenix for are APIs (either for mobile apps or single page web applications). Because of that, it makes sense to glue together smaller libs to match your house style for how you want that auth contract to work.
s0l1dsnak3123··on Being Thankful for Free Software Developers
I just donated to Arch after reading your comment as I've been using Arch for well over 7 years now, and it's by far my favourite Linux distribution.

You can have them as RPM as well if you are so inclined! https://github.com/smpallen99/exrm-rpm
s0l1dsnak3123··on Phoenix 1.3.0 Released
We’ve been using Phoenix at my company in production for over a year now. So far the experience has been overwhelmingly positive, our team have totally come round to its adoption, our server costs have come down and our response times have gone down also.

Coming from Rails, the ecosystem isn’t quite there yet, but it is far more mature than rails’ was this early on.

The hardest thing for us has been deployment, but we’ve solved that internally, including giving back by building exrm_deb (it works with distillery too!) to compile the entire project into a Debian package.

If you haven’t already looked at Phoenix (and Ecto!) give it a try :)

s0l1dsnak3123··on Elixir 1.5 released
Congrats to the Elixir core dev team for another fine release. The improvements to iEX's debugging capabilities are going to make a big difference to day-to-day developer UX. Thanks!
s0l1dsnak3123··on Ask HN: What happened to the ORM?
Not just allowing raw SQL - allowing raw SQL fragments in your code, mixed in with regular ORM usage! Turn those fragments into a function and you have nicely reusable components with which to build advanced queries.
s0l1dsnak3123··on The Exquisitely English (and Lucrative) World of London Clerks
I saw this as a veiled threat from the Clerk that they'd drop the barristers as clients - in other words the clerk wouldn't ask for a penny more compensation because he wouldn't be passing the barristers any more work.
s0l1dsnak3123··on Theresa May Wants To Regulate The Internet
The liberal democrats, the SNP and the Green parties (in England & Wales, and in Scotland) do not support policy such as this.

s0l1dsnak3123··on Show HN: A Directory of Tech Companies, Events, News, Tweets etc in Scotland
We have quite a burgeoning startup scene up here. Maybe it's time to come back north and check it out! :)
s0l1dsnak3123··on UK Government is breaking the law by collecting everyone's internet data
This only applies to the UK election system, not the Scottish election system.

Also the libdems actually did manage to achieve quite a few of their campaign pledges: https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2015/apr/15/how-much-of...

s0l1dsnak3123··on Tell HN: I think you're downplaying the PHP community
In British politics we have this concept of "The silent majority" which inevitably gets mentioned at referenda and elections. The effect was probably most prevalent in the Scottish independence referendum in 2014 where a no vote of 55% bet a yes vote of 45%.

Many many yes voters (including myself) were very surprised by this result - the internet was on fire with grass roots activism of all kinds. Glasgow had weekly rallies with thousands (sometimes tens of thousands) attending. And yet we lost.

I can't help but wonder if we're witnessing the same phenomena - a silent majority of people who feel no need to contribute to the discourse but have different opinions and values on the subjects us in the comments section are discussing.

Interesting stuff.

s0l1dsnak3123··on Tonic is now RunKit, a part of Stripe
First time I've heard of RunKit. I've used Jupyter in the past to do a similar thing (minus the API stuff which is very cool). What does RunKit provide that Jupyter doesn't?
