s-phi-nl··on Python.org Redesign Preview
Yeah, please use a slightly longer variable name.
s-phi-nl··on Posthumously pardon Aaron Swartz
Nixon's acceptance was seen as a admission of guilt. I am not sure it would be wise to petition for a pardon, not only for a crime that may not have been committed, but for a crime that many at this site feel should be legal behavior.
s-phi-nl··on Ada 2012 Language Standard Approved by ISO
For all those advocating Ada on this thread, could you recommend a good tutorial to us? I love learning about new programming languages, but particularly for a relatively-obscure language like Ada, I would appreciate a recommendation.
s-phi-nl··on Moscow Court Finds Kasparov Not Guilty of Illegal Protest
Whom are you thinking of that left after the fall of the USSR in 1991? I do not mean to challenge you, but others will, so I would like some details.
s-phi-nl··on Frank Gehry Is Designing Facebook’s New Office Building And That’s Sad
The OP says that new design will be like their current setup, which (as far as I can tell) seems to attract employees well enough. Any comments from Facebook employees on how the "one room building that somewhat resembles a warehouse" works for them currently?
s-phi-nl··on Do you have a secret?
Flagged as political.

s-phi-nl··on The (logarithmic) calendar I want
See http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1248496 and especially http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1248922 for another discussion of the same idea.
s-phi-nl··on Request PG: Could we please have the black bar out for Steve Jobs?
PG has twice put a black bar above the top bar in memory of someone's death. See http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=644954 for the first use of it, http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=859117 for the second.
s-phi-nl··on Ask HN: I think My code isn't Good enough
Do you have a link to _why's philosophy on coding and making mistakes? A quick Google search did not yield anything. Thanks.
s-phi-nl··on Does Paul Graham Get What He Asks For? [infographic]
Along with DabbleDB, bList (also acquired, by Socrata) was the other startup mentioned at the time as satisfying this idea.
s-phi-nl··on Kate Turning 10 Years Old
Even if KDE did get more attention, on openSuSE (which seems to have a fairly large proportion of KDE users compared to other distros) Kate does not come preinstalled even with KDE. Anyone know why?
s-phi-nl··on Learn C The Hard Way
While not a book, the Ruby website does have a "Ruby from Other Languages" page that seems similar to what you describe.
s-phi-nl··on Richard Clarke: China's Cyberassault On America
Cuba was explicitly given up by Spain to be occupied, but explicitly not annexed, by the United States because of the Teller Amendment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teller_Amendment). Thus, while the US may have governed Cuba at one time, it never owned it.
s-phi-nl··on Richard Dreyfuss' dramatic reading of the iTunes EULA
In complete honesty, what are some of the weaknesses of OpenOffice? Lest I seem like an OpenOffice fanboy, I will say that I expect that I will agree with a number of its weaknesses, but simply be unaware of them since I have not used Microsoft Office much since moving to Linux a few years ago. One weakness I do know of is that its .doc converter is not perfect.
s-phi-nl··on You have exactly three passwords, don't you?
I always related it to the military practice of issuing new codebooks periodically. For one concrete example, the Japanese changed their codes right before the Battle of Midway, so the US was not able to under any of the messages sent during the battle. Unfortunately for the Japanese, the US already had enough information from cracking the former Japanese code that this really did not matter.
s-phi-nl··on Githits
I am a little curious how you detect where I am. For me it shows "Philadelphia", which is indeed the city nearest my hometown, but I am currently at my college in Minnesota, so my IP address would show that I am there.
s-phi-nl··on Dabble DB shuts down on May 18, 2011
I am very glad they got Seaside out before the sale: it has really helped to revitalize Smalltalk.
s-phi-nl··on Damn Cool Algorithms: Levenshtein Automata
Unfortunately, "food" is a poor example for explaining how Levenshtein Automata work in general because it has a double letter. This means that in one state, you have the "o" transition to more states than usual because it is both the next letter and the next letter after that. If you want to generalize his automaton, do the powerset construction for some other word like "news".

s-phi-nl··on Ask HN: Self-marketing?
In what way might you host your OSS that would be more optimal for marketing yourself?
s-phi-nl··on Ask PG: Are you an atheist?
See his reply, but I had already inferred that he was from that he considers religion a lie in http://paulgraham.com/lies.html

s-phi-nl··on A Comfy Helvetica frontpage for Hacker News
SearchYC's benefit is not that it gives more current results: it allows you to search comments by, e.g., their author in ways that Google, being a general search engine, cannot.
s-phi-nl··on Production is Red, Development is Blue
Konsole does this automatically, at least on openSuSE linux.
s-phi-nl··on American Airlines Leaves Orbitz
Does this affect ITA directly at all? I will admit I am not clear on the relationship between Orbitz and ITA.
