s-lambert··on What Happens When Twelve Thousand Game Developers Converge?
There's nothing wrong with crypto on its own but crypto in video games is 100% a total scam. There are no realistic use cases for it other than tricking people out of their money.
s-lambert··on What Happens When Twelve Thousand Game Developers Converge?
Crypto scam artists are always trying to stick their greedy fingers into everything, of course crypto is trying to invade video games too.
s-lambert··on Elon Musk to join Twitter’s board of directors
Twitter's UI didn't get vastly better with the redesigns, it just looked different, which is an example of a company stagnating IMO.
s-lambert··on I hate what video games have become
Elden Ring is published by Bandai Namco, which makes it an AAA game; Bandai Namco is larger than Ubisoft which is where most of the "AAA = bad" games are from.
s-lambert··on Geniuses of the past were aristocratically tutored
That's still not anywhere near the same though, a tutor is able to figure out what the student is missing through observation and also teach in a way that the student will learn fastest. Whereas any internet resource relies on the student being able to figure out what they themselves don't know and isn't tailor-made for them.
s-lambert··on The Future of Kubernetes
>pretty interesting ideas around WASM

I'm confused here, does WASM stand for something different besides WebAssembly because googling "kubernetes WASM' came up with nothing but WebAssembly. But I was under the impression that WebAssembly is just a virtual machine. I'm not much of a backend person but I don't see the overlap between container management (kubernetes) to a virtual machine (WASM).

They can get pregnant but why do trans men want to have pregnancy as part of their identity? Wouldn't getting pregnant as a trans man trigger dysphoria?
s-lambert··on Francis Ford Coppola’s $100M Dollar Bet
It's not about costs, it's about getting tight feedback loops because you can see exactly what the camera is filming straight away instead of having to wait for the green screen -> post processing loop.
s-lambert··on Web3 is not going to change the world
I won't regret it, all of this is just more complicated ways of turning money into more money and is totally unnecessary. If working for a living isn't enough and I have to start spending time on DeFI or crypto to stay afloat then I would just rather die, this stuff is dystopian.
s-lambert··on Singapore prime minister Lee Hsien Loong’s Sudoku solver (2018)
I think it's because programming is not that much of a stretch to the brain if you've done any mathematics and are literate. The brain is used to combining structures through words to create sentences and programming runs along that same path (just more strictly).
s-lambert··on Divorce in the rich world is getting less nasty
Divorce is always going to suck for kids though even if it gets better.
s-lambert··on OpenGOAL: Port of Jak and Daxter, written in GOAL, a custom Lisp by Naughty Dog
Lisp was used for some code for the original NES, there was a presentation about it but it looks like only the reddit thread[0] linking to it still exists.

s-lambert··on Shenanigans on Microsoft Feedback Hub
This sounds similar to the behaviour of Internet Explorer on Windows 10 (which always felt weird). If you have two tabs open in IE, they appear as two separate windows when clicking the icon in the taskbar. Edge behaves as expected where two tabs -> one window -> one click but it seems like they just regressed as a whole for Windows 11.
s-lambert··on Use spacer components instead of CSS margins (2020)
Why do you need to add spacer divs? As long as the child components accept classes as props then the styling comes from the parent but is still applied on the children.
s-lambert··on Copyright doesn't need 95 years to get the job done
But wouldn't these adaptations still be allowed even if the original was copyrighted? Hamlet -> The Lion King has similarities but there's enough differences that even if Hamlet were copyrighted it'd still be allowed as a separate work of art.
s-lambert··on Web3/Crypto: Why Bother?
The killer app sounds like a dystopian hell to me, wow work that is the epitome of pointlessness.
s-lambert··on Web3? I have my DAOts
Frankly almost everything to do with finance I would rather live without and crypto is just more of that. To me, everything blockchain related is people popping a boner over an ever increasing bureaucracy of money.
s-lambert··on You click a link to a news site, to read an article that seems interesting
Isn't this what Web 3.0 was supposed to be before crypto-fans stole the term?

> I have a dream for the Web [in which computers] become capable of analyzing all the data on the Web – the content, links, and transactions between people and computers. A "Semantic Web", which makes this possible, has yet to emerge, but when it does, the day-to-day mechanisms of trade, bureaucracy and our daily lives will be handled by machines talking to machines. The "intelligent agents" people have touted for ages will finally materialize.

s-lambert··on Ivermectin: Much More Than You Wanted to Know
But overdose is a relative term, is it actually easy to overdose on ivermectin? Depending on the drug and how much a typical dosage is, overdosing could be a simple mistake like taking a second pill or be a ludicrous amount like eating hundreds of pills.
s-lambert··on YouTube takes down independent court livestreams
I did a quick google search for articles about ivermectin overdose but all I found was there's been an uptick but it seems overexaggerated. This[0] one shows there were 21 people who called in about ivermectin, it's only one state but still doesn't seem like a big deal. There was another story about a Mississippi hospital[1] where 70% calls were about ivermectin but then it turned out they meant 70% of calls about ivermectin (not total calls) were about the animal version. This article [2] includes Minnesota which saw <100 calls and people having overdose symptoms but no one dying.

Treating covid with ivermectin does seem like a bad idea, but it also doesn't really seem that dangerous overall. I'm sure there are deaths out there from people overdosing on it but they seem like a really rare event.

s-lambert··on Rich Harris joins Vercel to work on Svelte full time
Both Svelte[0] and React[1] are the same in this regard, the key is there as an optimization and isn't required in either framework. The only difference is that React's key is on the element whereas Svelte is as part of the each expression.

s-lambert··on NFT's aren't the answer to the problems of digital art
None of it requires an NFT, I mean nearly everything crypto related is "this doesn't require crypto but crypto is one way of doing it". At least with an NFT it'd be a bit standardized? I don't actually think NFTs are useful, that's just an example of what people mean when they say an NFT could be used in games. But then I was taking it to the realistic conclusion that it's just useless because there's no advantage to giving away free stuff between different games of different companies. Which only leaves shared stuff between the same company, like digital Amiibos, but then that's also just a centralized API replaced with crypto for no real reason.
s-lambert··on NFT's aren't the answer to the problems of digital art
An NFT doesn't include the assets, it's just a receipt ID.

For a recent example, Riot has just released a bunch of tie-ins for with other games. Like the character Jinx is now in Fortnite. You could use an NFT that says this person owns the Riot character Jinx and thus the Fortnite developers could let you pick the Jinx skin in game.

Although a realistic example I think it would be stupid to do in practice because why would would Epic want to give away Jinx for free just because you bought it from Riot? Then there's a much smaller advantage of having the tie-in, sure you could get cross-play between Riot games players and Fortnite players but you also lose on a quick cash win of getting Riot fans to buy a Fortnite skin.

s-lambert··on NFT's aren't the answer to the problems of digital art
DLC cranked up to 11, that just sounds like it will make modern games even worse.
s-lambert··on How I made Google’s data grid scroll faster with a line of CSS
The cost doesn't seem that different from ag-grid[0] (which is also fairly popular) and costs like $750 per developer per year.

s-lambert··on My experience of losing a friend to heroin (2020)
You are talking about a very specific niche of video games though. Gambling based video games are addictive because of gambling, which you can do without the video game part of it.

Video game addiction still exists and can be bad but it's probably nowhere near as detrimental as gambling addiction.

s-lambert··on Greater than 99% consensus on human caused climate change in the literature
Natural climate changes at a very slow rate that to the people experiencing it, it barely changes at all. However man-made climate change indicates a rate that will be noticeable in a human lifetime.

It is fair to simply say "climate change" to mean "the rapid climate change that we are experiencing". There is no need to add the "man-made" distinction other than to please people being overly literal.

s-lambert··on You either die an MVP or live long enough to build content moderation
I think this is because old school message boards had a sense of community between existing users and there wasn't a large influx of users at any single point. If one person comes in and starts running amok it's easy to just ignore them, tell them off or ban them. But now there's less persistent forums that people are a part of, so there's a lack of community standards that people just naturally gravitate towards. There's no overall community between, for example, people who comment on youtube, so any youtube comment section is just whoever happens to stumble across it.
s-lambert··on Atlassian fired me while I was taking care of my wife who is fighting cancer
But 2 months off could be a totally reasonable amount? If you worked for 2 years without taking PTO, taking 2 months off to avoid burnout seems like a normal thing to do. Some people prefer to take bigger, longer vacations rather than smaller more frequent ones.
