Totally agree with you with the gatekeeping. This is an informal conversation, and you’re just a random person from the internet. There’s no standard you must be held to, and people shouldn’t take what you say to be some statement of empirical fact.
It doesn’t make it any less interesting. His entire show isn’t literally lies. But of course, everything should be taken with a heavy grain of salt. It’s just as fallacious to assume every single thing is false simply because you don’t like or trust a podcast host. It’s hit or miss in my experience.
If you’re going to give a code challenge, make it simple, representative of a real-world problem, and allow them to use resources like stack overflow/blogs/manuals/GitHub issues. Code challenges where you implement an algorithm from memory select only one type of candidate: people who study for interviews.
Isn’t some of the so-called gain of function research (and I do mean in the broadest sense) effectively controlled evolution over many cycles such that it evolves the correct mutations? And though I know the paper was retracted, what about those HIV-1 inserts?
Either way, empirically we have no conclusive evidence of natural origin (of the stages between the original bat coronavirus and the original Wuhan variant) nor of a lab leak. One also does not preclude the other; a virus of natural origin could still leak from a lab that studies such viruses.
Sorry but what molecular evidence suggests it evolved in the wild, exactly? We haven’t identified a single predecessor mutation between the original bat Coronavirus and SARS-CoV-2, nor have we identified infections from the time period that are geographically between the habitat of the carrier bats and Wuhan. No one is disputing that it’s based on a bat coronavirus, but the thesis is that the bay coronavirus was modified in the lab and then leaked.
It’s interesting, I’m severely ADHD and I can focus much better at home. I find offices horribly distracting. I used to come to the office 1 or 2 days a week before the pandemic, and they were my least productive days by an order of magnitude.
Everything you just says is a great advocacy of a hybrid environment. I’m diametrically opposed to ever working in an office again. I’ve never worked in an office where I felt comfortable. I’m wonderful at focusing from my home office and my productivity nearly doubled. I’m literally never going back. That said, it doesn’t work for you it seems, and that matters too. Hybrid is the answer, as one size does not fit all.
I’m extremely impressed with Spotify and Rogan’s ability to compromise and address feedback. I don’t see anyone being unhappy about this, though some (not including myself) may see it as not enough.
Not to pick on your response, but every time I see a thread about not understanding math, I think *my people!!!*. I come to these threads hoping to find answers, and all I see are “read this calculus textbook” or “3blue1brown”! I watched this whole linear algebra series about 7 times and I just don’t get it. There’s something about the way people explain math that just isn’t intuitive to me, like it’s too disconnected from reality or something. I wonder if I’m not the only one…
Don’t forget those awful goddamn cookie banners, and the disable ad blocker pop ups. I hate even leaving the major platforms because my entire phone screen is covered up by these annoyances.
Pretty good book so far, but it’s very much over my head as a Rust developer who is somewhere between beginner and intermediate (and writes Rust at work).
I don’t enjoy reading the old language and lack of modern context. Any more modern philosophers you recommend reading? Or modern summaries of older philosophers?
Idk if I’d say it changed my life, but as a home owner, a FLIR camera for my phone. Helps you spot leaks, bad insulation, HVAC issues, and also it’s just super cool to see in thermal vision.
Some of us actively take steps to avoid being tracked all of the time. People like you are the reason people like me have to try so hard. I’m so sick of this argument.
I never liked talking to technology, and I’m not elderly either. I don’t know why people find this better than just pulling out their phone and tapping a couple of buttons.
