Awesome! Already have a project I can use this on, thanks.

As a side note, why do you use this weird non-Github, non-Gitlab, non-Bitbucket sketchy looking git host? I can see the code obviously, but it makes me worry about supply chain security.

Why post things with paywalls? Anyone have an archive link?
rzz3··on Americans' love affair with big cars is killing them
It sounds like the safest thing for you and your family is to buy a heavier car also. You’re also not literally making that choice between someone else’s family and your own. How many people have you killed while driving? Me, zero, after decades of driving. My parents are well into their old age, have driven heavy cars their whole lives, and still haven’t killed anyone. In fact, out of many people I’ve known, with all shapes and sizes of car, the only one (as far as I’m aware) who killed someone was drunk, and drove a small sports car very fast and killed someone.

To be fair to your argument, you _are_ talking about a “line of escalation” and an issue with a lot of moral complexity. I’m not even saying you’re wrong, rather just that I think you can’t view it so simply. Do you have kids or a husband or a wife? Could you _really_ put their own lives before strangers, or do you just want to see a world where people give more compassion to their fellow human? Because I want that too; I’m just not willing to sacrifice my loved ones for it.

rzz3··on Americans' love affair with big cars is killing them
I can’t really understand where you’re coming from. Self preservation is at the absolute core of us all. You can’t honestly expect the average human to put the lives of unknown strangers before the lives of their own, as you say, loved ones.

I have never simultaneously seen something both so amazing and so horrible :) No but really, this is impressive.
rzz3··on Joe Biden stands down as Democratic candidate
But there’s no one else to vote for, they’d still vote for her with Romney as the VP. With that vs Trump as the other option, she’d still get the votes from the progressive base and potentially bring over a few more independent voters.
rzz3··on Biden signs TikTok bill into law, starting clock for ByteDance to divest
Ironically we’d see far fewer overdoses and a lot less drug-related violence worldwide if America would legalize the drugs people are going to take in America regardless of drug laws. You didn’t pick a great example.
rzz3··on Biden signs TikTok bill into law, starting clock for ByteDance to divest
It’s alarming to me that you think the owners of arguably the most successful social media company in the world would sell it only to appease a single country. It comes off as a typical American perspective of thinking they’re the center of the world. At TikTok’s current global growth rate, they could exceed the entire user base of the USA in just a few months. I’m not sure how that user share corresponds to revenue as I’d assume the US is a lucrative market, but I just don’t see it. And TikTok has directly said they won’t be divesting.

rzz3··on Why do programmers need private offices with doors?
But, why offices at all? All my productivity problems are solved by just working from home.
rzz3··on Goodbye Spotify
I see this as a very reactionary take, and I see the alternatives to streaming as impractical. Spotify is great, honestly it’s really great, I don’t have the free time the author seems to have to make a sociopolitical statement with my choices in music streaming. For me, music is about the music, and the emotional experience thereof. If you don’t like Spotify, just go ahead and cancel it—you don’t need to write a blog about it. I’m also not one to select my products based on their “one [or two] bad thing[s]”; there are dozens of things that make Spotify excellent from my view.
rzz3··on Ask HN: How could I safely contact drug cartels?

rzz3··on Why Twitter didn’t go down: From a real Twitter SRE
To be honest, growth. I work at a tech company of a similar size, and keeping the lights on, so to speak, from a systems perspective is something we can do with a few engineers. By far the bulk of employees at my company are in R&D, sales, business operations, infrastructure growth, etc. If you build a resilient architecture, keeping something like Twitter simply running wouldn’t take that many people.
rzz3··on Highlights from Git 2.38
Yeah, I had searched github for it and saw Microsoft’s C# repo for it.
rzz3··on Highlights from Git 2.38
Is Scalar really written in C#, doesn’t run on Linux, and is now part of the git codebase? I’m confused.

rzz3··on Apple tells employees to work at the office three times per week starting Sept
It’s fairly easy for most people to compare their own productivity before and after working from home. Mine is significantly greater. The number of hours I’ve spent working has drastically increased due to losing my 2 hour commute, and the focus I’ve been able to achieve at home is like nothing I’ve ever seen at an office.

What if you’re not comfortable alone with your thoughts? To be honest, long drives alone have a way of dwelling up some tough memories.
rzz3··on FedEx to close data centers, retire mainframes
It’s kindof shocking to see it take so long to move away from mainframes. I understand it a bit with regard to banking specifically, but I’m shocked to learn FedEx is such a dinosaur.

rzz3··on What happened to the lab-leak hypothesis?
>Not to be glib, but what would be a legitimate scientific interest in discovering the truth?

Meaning, someone who didn’t walk in with a bias and look around the room for things that support said bias. This debate is packed with armchair experts who seem to have a larger interest in the politics than the science.

>If it was a lab leak, "Oops." …

Oops?!

>Or, in other words, what would we do differently if it were a lab leak? Increase biocontainment protocols?

If you’re like most of us on HN, at work, when we make big mistakes that cost our companies money and users, we have thorough retrospectives, learn from our mistakes, identify root causes, build for redundancy and high availability, and prevent the same incident from ever happening twice. That’s what I’d expect to see if the lab leak (which you strangely keep calling human origin, as if a naturally occurring virus can’t leak from a lab) were proven.

> Okay, so we've made human-origin less likely. We still have to deal with naturally-occurring in the future.

We have naturally-occurring forest fires, yet as a society, we sure seem to put a lot of effort into stopping “human-origin” fires. This sounds a bit “fuck it, why bother trying to make anything better, something bad will always happen”.

rzz3··on What happened to the lab-leak hypothesis?
Sure, but Occam’s is a logical shortcut, not a method of scientific conclusion. I personally suspect a lab leak origin, but I can’t say I have conclusive evidence. I just find it extremely likely based on a myriad of circumstantial evidence, and a lack of any conclusive evidence of natural origin.
rzz3··on What happened to the lab-leak hypothesis?
Very well put. One thing I’d add, is that this entire debate regarding the lab leak hypothesis is entirely politicized, and I feel few people actually have legitimate scientific interest in discovering the truth. Either theory is perfectly viable given the evidence we currently have.
