Account is abandoned, I'm bored of HN and people downvoting alternative opinions.

This site needs to be improved so that alternative, non-spam opinions are not downvoted into oblivion if this thing has to scale according to Paul Graham's dream.

Whenever I say something that I think is true that is contrarian, some people just downvote me. I never downvote my critics unless it's webspam, even if it's a blatant lie. Learn to respect people. Not everyone is going to agree with your view, that doesn't mean they're your enemy or hate you.

Bye :)

PS: If any HN employee is reading this, purge my account under the GDPR, right to be forgotten and any PII like residential proxy ip address linked to it.

rydre··on Quit Twitter (2019)
Twitter trends are manipulated. Do not take them seriously. They're a tool of social engineering.
rydre··on The terms of the AGPL are pretty easy to comply with
> The reason people don't know about Linux is because it's lacking in consumer-facing design and because much of its use is largely invisible, not because it's GPL.

The problem with GPL/GNU/Linux is that most of the time only toxic idealistic programmers like it who do not have a life. Android is linux only in name. Most of the useful parts are binary blobs. Designers/UI/UX people have a life and are not too logical. They're not going to want to contribute for free to something like Linux where no one knows where to start. There is no proper designer tooling for them. And whatever the tooling is, it will be created by programmers, which mean no input of the users. So predictably a dumpster fire for real non programmer end users.

Most people are not programmers and they want GUI they can comfortably explore not some undocumented CLI. To the everyday consumer, the GUI has more visible value not that boring kernel. You could have the same interface and replace Linux with and real free Unix type OS and non programmers would not notice.

Yeah so? Apple should be punished for many other things like abusing dominance to get advantage in other industries, not this entitled "contributes nothing back".

It's not Apple's problem that the software was really free. If it were not free, Apple could have gone the windows route and make their own everything. Would not be hard since they control hardware.

Nothing sad here. Just the entitlement of people who do not want to pay for a good OS. If the OSS GPL Stallman-esque community was so good, they could have created a real competitor to macOS not the budget quality os called linux that only lifeless sys admin like people can use (on consumer desktop).

rydre··on Intel is making a mockery of reshoring
> Intel’s chief executive Bob Swan yesterday told industry analysts that the former industry leader in chip manufacturing might quit the fabrication business altogether, outsourcing its designs to Taiwan or South Korea instead. The company’s shock announcement called into question US efforts to return critical manufacturing capacity to the United States, and came despite semiconductor industry lobbying to secure federal subsidies for chip production in the United States. Semiconductors are the building blocks of the digital economy, and America’s inability to slow the decline of onshore chip fabrication is a strategic liability of the highest order.

Sounds like bad news. The diversity that remains of chip manufacturing must be preserved everywhere around the world, including the U.S, Europe, China and the rest of Asia. Not doing so would mean we're likely going to hit a dead end rather soon for current silicon.

> Intel’s 10-nanometer technology has just come into production, three years after target, and is already obsolete. Once the industry leader, Intel lacks the engineering expertise to stay ahead of Asian competition.

If google was really good at removing then Pinterest and Quora would have been downranked/removed from the index.

And then there is this spam site called AnalyticsVidhya whenever I search for stuff related to machine learning.

Gaming SEO still works, so I have to maintain my own blocklist of websites that automatically hides the biggest offenders from my results.

rydre··on Reporters are leaving newsrooms for newsletters
Until they regress because of SEO people trying to game the system.
rydre··on A belief in meritocracy is not only false: it’s bad for you
Why do so many people aspire for meritocracy everywhere? Imagine if there really was meritocracy in the political system. All we would have is someone who would pander to the local population and eventually lean to be xenophobic as a process.

This is why in politics, candidates have to be controlled and sometimes not allowed to participate even if their opinions would be much more popular. Sometimes more intelligent people have to control how the political process works for the greater good even if it is undemocratic.

Free for all will always eventually lead to someone like Hitler. Being more tribal is an easier but regressive path to chose for humans, and humans always chose the path of least resistance, not the optimal global maxima.

rydre··on Slack Files EU Competition Complaint Against Microsoft
The best move now would be for Slack, Zoom to merge, buy Airtable and Webflow, quickly try to build a moat. No one will get this opportunity again. But they might just build the next Google/Facebook/Apple this way.

rydre··on Robinhood and How to Lose Money
It's not all about the odds. Sure at an aggregate level it might make sense. But instead of looking at it as mere % expected return, look at it as a tiered return. Above 200K I'd need 1M+ a year to improve my life. Above that, I'd need 10M+ a year. Above that 50M, then 500M and then 4B a year etc.

The quality of life improvement varies in the income bracket. Not every % increase is equal for individual humans.

rydre··on Robinhood and How to Lose Money
The quality of life increase fore mere 8% return is not as much. You'd need much higher returns for many people to make them not use the money now. Losing 1K every month for 5 years for a person who make 200k a year is not much Given the chance to make 100million - billion even if is very little.

Think of it as being a indie VC. Most investment will lose, the ones that gain might make you a lot.

It's shame that the author has no idea about the security model of WebAssembly. Control-flow integrity and protected call stacks prevents direct code injection attacks in WebAssembly. Please check. https://webassembly.org/docs/security/

Someone who?

rydre··on Brave Browser, wiping history still leaves trace of visited sites
1. Founded Names Database - a social media website designed to collect user information as aggressively as possible, before selling all the information to classmates.com.[1] (got this from https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23709270)

2. Invested in Locately TWO YEARS after founding DDG.[2]

Locately, for those unfamiliar with the company, had built a proprietary data-mining engine which collected data from customers’ (opted-in) mobile phones in order to understand more about what sort of behaviors they were engaging in out in the real world. It could tell how a customer moved from one location to the next, what stores they passed along the way, how long they visited stores, what sort of lifestyle or shopper segment the user fell into, which competing stores a consumer would frequent, how a business compared to its rivals, and much more.

3. The DDG favicon issue since 2018. Was only promised to be fixed four days ago after it got to the front page of HN.[3]

> What’s the evidence that DDG itself is not privacy centric as claimed?

Past behavior is a predictor of future behavior. (see: Zuck, Thiel, Facebook, Palantir)

Why the downvotes again? I gave a reasonable reply to their question.

At least give me a reason for them... =)

rydre··on Brave Browser, wiping history still leaves trace of visited sites
His investments into Locately in 2010.

Locately is pioneering the science of Location Analytics. Locately's software analyzes semi-continuous GPS data from mobile phones to better understand what consumers do and how they shop.

Edit: why the downvotes? :/ I like my HN points...

rydre··on Brave Browser, wiping history still leaves trace of visited sites
Correct. None of the publicly/commercially available software can do that, so don't worry most people won't pay for it.
