ryantmulligan··on Ask HN: Where to Host a FastAPI App
You can fork Replit's FastAPI template and edit it and deploy from the online editor https://replit.com/@replit/FastAPI?v=1

It uses uvicorn as recommended by the FastAPI docs.

ryantmulligan··on Show HN: FlakeHub – Discover and publish Nix flakes
Does it store artifacts or redirect to GitHub (or other) storage?
ryantmulligan··on Startup Tip: Save bandwidth with Gzip (Eg: YC News can save upto 80% per page)
currently this page is scoring an 82 on YSlow. Needs to make use of a CDN. Needs to add expires headers to external resources, and Needs to Configure ETags.
ryantmulligan··on In Defense Of Stuff
agreed. What he writes isn't a defense of hoarding, it's a defense of newness, which PG wasn't even attacking.
ryantmulligan··on How to lose half your subscribers in 28 days or less
zombies?
ryantmulligan··on How can engineering schools not teach startups?
Can you actually teach entrepreneurship? It seems more like a state of mind that you have to learn over a long time of self discovery.
ryantmulligan··on Reverse YC funding program. PG, what's your thought?
So your company will be generating 94% of the value instead of 6%?
ryantmulligan··on What idea(s) do you regret not implementing?
don't talk about what you regret not implementing. Implement the next thing.
ryantmulligan··on [dead]
do some people have enough karma to downvote submissions?
ryantmulligan··on What can you do with money?
I think you should be investing in having more time. Unless your company is what you want to be doing constantly, in which case you should invest all of your money in your company, so your company can do exactly what you want and doesn't have to take crap from anyone.
ryantmulligan··on Google Print (Newspaper) Ads (Launching -- Discussion)
Google ads will work on the newspaper medium. Traditional newspaper ads are distruptive marketing: the content of the ads is not similar to the content. Google will have content sensitive newspaper ads, which will work a lot better.
ryantmulligan··on Lisp as a replacement for XML -- any ideas?
attributes are a red herring in XML. attributes could just as easily be expressed as a child called attributes, or just by listing the attributes as children.
ryantmulligan··on How do you think the internet will be in 5 to 10 years?
Three-dimensional navigation, for many tasks, involves questionable ergonomics.
ryantmulligan··on Help me inspire 7th graders.
Doing is the second best way to learn.

ryantmulligan··on If you want to learn Lisp, be ready to meet the scowling faces (and don't even think about mentioning PG in #lisp)
I referenced that point out of context.

Someone asked, "Is there any demand for Arc?", After people were joking about the 'Invisible Arc.' I said, "If it is more clear and consistent, I demand it." I was merely stating my demand, not arguing with them that Arc is better. I don't know if Arc is better, but I know that if the Community of Arc is better than #lisp that would be a great start.

ryantmulligan··on If you want to learn Lisp, be ready to meet the scowling faces (and don't even think about mentioning PG in #lisp)
Palish- I sympathize you. I recently read PCL and started to code a project with it. I have a pretty firm idea of where I wanted to go and ran into the same issues with ASDF that you mention. Fortunately I was on linux so I was able to fix them quickly. Still I was just fed up with a lot of the unclean syntax that I had to write to make stuff work. No one was sympathetic with my viewpoint on #lisp and they all said there was no such thing as "clean and consistent" code when I argued that I would use Arc if it was more clean and consistent than ANSI CL. I came to the conclusion that the community sucks and I don't want to be apart of it, even if their language is better. Anyway to celebrate my decision I went over and coded some rubini.us . Cheers.
ryantmulligan··on Paul Graham, Please Start a YC Podcast
too bad mp3 is a proprietary format.
ryantmulligan··on What about health insurance?
Soon I will be out of school and won't be able to get health insurance from sources like parents or school. Does anyone have a suggestions for how they got health insurance, or what is a good method for finding a good provider? Also, how much did it cost?
ryantmulligan··on What desktop apps do you use?
There already is one. It's called 9ne

ryantmulligan··on Has anyone used paste? What differentiates paste in your opinon?
what's WSGI?
ryantmulligan··on Which language is news.ycombinator.com and reddit written in?
Actually, they tried Django but it did not meet their needs so they switched to web.py.
ryantmulligan··on Groovy/Grails vs. Ruby/Rails vs. Python/(something)?
My favorite feature of Python on Planes is the one liner it takes to make Reddit. It's just Reddit.new(). It even figures out the databases for you automatically.
ryantmulligan··on Qi, arc competitor? Qi is lisp for 21st century.
Any competitor is a good thing. It will either cause Arc to move faster, or just be better than it. The pattern matching simplifications seem quite slick.
ryantmulligan··on AWS (S3, EC2, etc) Reduces Bandwidth Prices (incl. bulk bandwidth discounts)
While the bandwidth has gone up, they now charge a price per request to their servers. They said this is a decrease in cost for 70% of their customers.
ryantmulligan··on Is Flex/Actionscript a real programming language? Can it do what Java does? (work offline, write files, networking etc.)
The hype is because you can possibly simplify rich websites by fitting your web content into the standardized widgets that Flex provides you, thus speeding up development a lot.
ryantmulligan··on What Linux laptops do you use for development?
I use Emperor Linux. They are expensive but very responsive to customers.
ryantmulligan··on Is negative PR still 'good' PR?
Thanks for the vote of confidence. I agree.
ryantmulligan··on Is negative PR still 'good' PR?
No we haven't considered it directly. We've had a lot of trouble figuring out how to price things though. An unlimited plan sounds like a pretty good idea.
ryantmulligan··on Is negative PR still 'good' PR?
My web company http://www.campusassassins.com was recently featured in the USA Today, but the article is what you might call 'negative.' It warns people not to engage in the activity that my website organizes. Do you think that negative PR is still good?

Here's the article
