ryanpetrich··on Memes on the Blockchain. Good idea or bad idea?
What value does a blockchain serve here? Is anyone asking for a distributed meme ledger?
ryanpetrich··on [dead]
Honestly? Meat tastes good and it's way easier to maintain a complete diet by eating it. I'll often pick the vegan option when it's tasty and available.
ryanpetrich··on Ask HN: How reliable are Glassdoor reviews?
There is a substantial amount of astroturfing on Glassdoor. Best to read the neutral and negative reviews, and ignore the positive ones and overall rating.
ryanpetrich··on Improving DataView performance in V8
In V8, small machine integers are signed 31bit integers on 32bit architectures and signed 32bit integers on 64bit architectures.
ryanpetrich··on Bulma – Flexbox CSS framework
Background music is much too loud in the introductory video. Makes it difficult to hear the presenter.
ryanpetrich··on Memoro: A Detailed Heap Profiler
It could still be better, but C++ compilers have never been as compatible or interchangeable as they are now.
ryanpetrich··on Itty Bitty: Sites contained within their own links
As others have pointed out, it's not quite a quine and just some silly JavaScript that reads out its source from the DOM and feeds it back into a copy of Itty Bitty's URL generation algorithm.
ryanpetrich··on Itty Bitty: Sites contained within their own links
A quine: https://itty.bitty.site/#/?XQAAAAIPAQAAAAAAAAAeGEPDwwAoaS2Sj...
ryanpetrich··on Viewing source on a Twitter profile only returns two lines of code
Content changes based on whether a cookie is set. The network panel of your browser's inspector shows the actual page source.
ryanpetrich··on The power of Result types in Swift
We should also remove airbags and seatbelts in automobiles. Surely then better driving habits would form.
ryanpetrich··on Amazon follows Google and Apple and bans system-wide ad blockers on app store
As of iOS 11, cookies are no longer shared between SFSafariViewController and Safari or instances of SFSafariViewController in other apps.
ryanpetrich··on JavaScript- Lodash vs Js function vs. for vs. for each
Caching the length property appears to have only a small impact on performance across Chrome, Firefox and Safari (caching is faster in Firefox, slower in Chrome, and about the same in Safari). Perhaps it's better to recommend the non-cached loop iteration instead?

The quick microbenchmark I checked this on: https://jsperf.com/for-to-length/1

ryanpetrich··on Fifty or Sixty Years of Processor Development for This?
It's relatively straightforward for self modifying code to manually flush instruction caches when necessary and JIT compilers that target other architectures already satisfy this requirement. Only backwards compatibility with existing x86 software requires a coherent instruction cache.
ryanpetrich··on Intel made smart glasses that look normal
The device under discussion does not have a camera.
ryanpetrich··on Comcast is injecting 400+ lines of JavaScript into web pages
Does Comcast's implementation of this system respect Cache-Control: no-transform as specified in RFC 2616?
ryanpetrich··on Recursion, Tail Calls and Trampolines in JavaScript (2015)
Thanks for writing it! Reading the source was an easy intro to babel for me when I was writing a trampoline-based TCO plugin.
ryanpetrich··on CSS Triggers
Seems hardly legacy if it's the rendering pipeline used in all browsers' current release versions.

(and I say this as a WebRender enthusiast)

ryanpetrich··on What's up with Google's secret signed time “CheckGoogleSignedTime”
This appears to be the metric that Chrome for Android uses to track how long it takes to verify code signing on downloaded APK's. Or possibly does, rather—open source Chromium doesn't reference the metric at all and it would take decompiling Chrome for Android to know for certain if it's used there or not.
ryanpetrich··on CheerpJ Applet Viewer – Runs Java applets without a local Java installation
Ah, so it's merely a machine that implements a virtual version of the Java runtime.
ryanpetrich··on JSMpeg – Decode It Like It's 1999
Whatever codec is hardware accelerated on the device you're playing it back on.
ryanpetrich··on On the Insecurity of Whitelists and the Future of Content Security Policy
The CDN could be on a subdomain.
ryanpetrich··on In foam-arrow patent fracas, Newegg swoops in to aid LARPer defendant
It's defence in a war of patents, but offence in a war against patents.
ryanpetrich··on Sendfile: a system call for web developers to know about
But they aren't free and if the file size is sufficiently small, the overhead of the constant overhead of the additional syscalls will dwarf the variable overhead of the extra copy. FreeBSD/OS X's sendfile allows specifying a header and trailer in a single syscall to avoid this limitation.
ryanpetrich··on Totally Isolated TLS Unwrapping Server
4KB is the size of a page on x86 and most architectures, the smallest unit of memory the OS can dispense. SSL termination is definitely a function you don't want the kernel to swap to disk, therefore each connection would get at least 4KB of physical memory under a process-per-connection model.
ryanpetrich··on Microsoft, Once Infested with Security Flaws, Does an About-Face
Apple is slowly migrating a massive amount of system features out of private frameworks and into background daemons protected by entitlements or privacy prompts. The end goal is that all sensitive data or hardware features are completely inaccessible from inside the sandbox, neither by private API, nor IOKit, nor syscall, nor direct filesystem access.

Retrieving the application list is a particularly poor example as there used to be a public API that did exactly that: CFPreferencesCopyApplicationList

ryanpetrich··on Don’t Call Yourself a Developer If You Don’t Code
Those who title-inflate do so at their own peril; doing so selects for employers that have poor ability to hire competent people.
ryanpetrich··on Toyota to Invest $1B in AI and Robotics R&D
Perhaps they're doing both?
ryanpetrich··on The future of UI is text
Oddly enough, the team that built Slack first worked on a MMORPG.
