ryanmccullagh··on Postgres IDE in VS Code
Remember the old adage, embrace, extend, extinguish.
ryanmccullagh··on How to gain code execution on hundreds of millions of people and popular apps
In top down orgs, no product manager care would blink a the at wasting time on security.

This is why we need to remove incompetent product managers that have no clue and somehow are in the position to control what developers can work on.

ryanmccullagh··on Laravel Cloud
This is a clone of Amezmo, which started in 2019.

I see they ripped off every feature that we innovated.

It’s actually quite flattering.

ryanmccullagh··on iTerm2 critical security release
Why does a terminal need an SSH integration. Answer: it doesn’t and you shouldn’t use this because it is unsafe.
ryanmccullagh··on Bypassing regulatory locks, hacking AirPods and Faraday cages
I bought AirPods Pro this year and it has been disappointing compared to the first gen non pro I had previously.

Somehow they fall out of my if i adjust my head down.

Battery life is good though

ryanmccullagh··on Open source 'Eclipse Theia IDE' exits beta to challenge Visual Studio Code
Finally. VScode is a landing zone for malicious extensions.
ryanmccullagh··on TeamViewer Security Breach
I would imagine this is due to a Product manager vetoing time spent on Security Considerations.
ryanmccullagh··on Millions of Taxpayers Call the IRS for Help. Two-Thirds Don't Reach Anyone
The political capital class protects their own. They have incentives to decrease power of IRS.
ryanmccullagh··on Car dealerships revert to pens and paper after cyberattacks on software provider
Someone needs to get fired over this. Probably an incompetent, non technical Product VP
ryanmccullagh··on Car dealerships revert to pens and paper after cyberattacks on software provider
In my experience, Product is always the first one to suggest cutting corners.
ryanmccullagh··on Car dealerships revert to pens and paper after cyberattacks on software provider
Not getting time to do security because we need to ship v1 is a decision called by Product
ryanmccullagh··on Car dealerships revert to pens and paper after cyberattacks on software provider
I would bet that a developer knew of the security issues, but was vetoed by Product.
ryanmccullagh··on FTC sues Adobe for hiding fees and inhibiting cancellations
I hope FTC gets DirectTV next -- which also fails to adequately disclose to consumers that by signing up for a subscription your're agreeing to a 2 year contract.
ryanmccullagh··on Ask HN: How do people feel about working for Meta?
Zuck is still My hero
ryanmccullagh··on Unprecedented flooding in Brazil leaves hundreds of thousands displaced
You don't seem to realize the Amazon and Rio Grande do Sul are on opposite sides of the country.
ryanmccullagh··on Unprecedented flooding in Brazil leaves hundreds of thousands displaced
the roads in areas of Rio Grande do Sul became river. Many people are displaced. The water flooded houses and many people died from the effects of water and electricity.
ryanmccullagh··on How the new Microsoft Recall feature fundamentally undermines Windows security
Likely, this will be illegal, especially if users aren't aware their screens are being recorded. Furthermore that screenshots of activity are stored in the Azure cloud.

Developers building it are probably thinking about Security Considerations, but are getting pushback from product managers. So data leak is imminent.

ryanmccullagh··on Ask HN: AWS SES Denial
Sounds spammy to me. You don't seem to have a product, but you're collecting emails, presumably without an actual product, but a preview of a product that doesn't exist yet? Do you have a tangible product today?
ryanmccullagh··on Ask HN: Why do you think OpenAI forbids changing email addresses?
Likely because implementing it securely and correctly costs development time.
ryanmccullagh··on VMware Fusion Pro: Now available free for personal use
I had purchased Fusion Pro recently due to the better graphics support in comparison to VirtualBox. I wonder what the catch is here.
ryanmccullagh··on Ask HN: Co-founder doesn't produce work, is unrealiable, doesn't want to leave
Sounds like your a non tech co founder?
ryanmccullagh··on Tesla Quietly Removes All U.S. Job Postings
I wonder if this has anything to do with Musk visiting China last week.
ryanmccullagh··on Stripe de-couples payments from the rest of its stack
when is the stripe IPO?
ryanmccullagh··on A weird CPIO discrepancy
Instead of an arbitrary octet-stream link, I would highly recommend hosting your bad cpio archive on GitHub. A `hexdump -C` would be preferred.
ryanmccullagh··on The skilled trades haven't caught as a career choice with Gen Z
> and the house engineer isn’t going out of the way to do any more work than what is absolutely necessary

Most contractors: Doing the absolute minimum necessary and cutting corners

ryanmccullagh··on Bill Gates: I'm literally losing sleep over Java (1996)
Oracle had already acquired Sun by the time I was in the technology industry. The respondent states that Sun is so set on giving things away. Can someone comment on the culture of Sun at that time?

Sun seems to have left a legacy in the open source community. What was the business logic on giving away the software for free? I know it's very common today, but Sun may have been a leader in open source. Any books recommendations would be appreciated too.

ryanmccullagh··on Sergey Brin: Irate Call from Steve Jobs
18 years ago, wow, that seems like not that long ago, but it's almost 2 decades.
ryanmccullagh··on Mozilla just fixed an 18-year-old Firefox bug
How is it legal for a non profit have a for-profit subsidiary?
ryanmccullagh··on Stripe’s real pricing: a primer
This is a native advertising piece. The author is associated with a Stripe competitor.
ryanmccullagh··on Tell HN: Heroku completely removed app's Postgres db which was on free plan
If Heroku was clear about timelines, I think it's unfair for you to be upset.

    1. You're not paying for the resource.
    2. They provided sufficient notification for you to plan
