ryanlm··on Ask HN: What was your “why didn't I start doing this sooner” moment?
Fasting has messed up my body. I DO NOT recommend doing this. Please consult a doctor first.
ryanlm··on My Interviews with Amazon
Hey Jeff. Thanks so much. I think I'm in touch with your team now.
ryanlm··on My Interviews with Amazon
What, I don't have a right to defend myself after being made fun of? When did I ever presume it would be simple?
ryanlm··on My Interviews with Amazon
Is the age old problem mean I'm too young to be taken seriously in any context?
ryanlm··on My Interviews with Amazon
Who is "we"? Also why would it be a code monkey job?
ryanlm··on My Interviews with Amazon
I meant design discussions, etc. Not just a code monkey. I'm sorry you think it is funny that I actually want to participate in the development process. Don't worry, at my current job, I know my place. I make sure not overstep bounds, etc.

Also, maybe I haven't been an Enterprise Fizzbuzz Java Developer for 6 years, but I've been keeping busy by having personal projects that most enterprise developers would probably not be able to understand.

ryanlm··on My Interviews with Amazon
I'll work for them in a heartbeat. Seriously, I want to work somewhere where I'm never bored, and can take part in conversations, etc. It seems like a good place for an ambitious new grad for a few years. If there are any Amazon employees reading this, please reach out!
ryanlm··on Dark Patterns are designed to confuse and enroll
Sure. With Debian, you can choose NOT to update it.
ryanlm··on Dark Patterns are designed to confuse and enroll
It seems like your first problem is you're using Windows 10. You agreed to let them do what they want with THEIR operating system.
ryanlm··on Facebook Posts Strong Profit and Revenue Growth
> Once you stop talking to developers and programmers, you > find that people don't give a shit about things remotely > technical, and just use stuff because 'everyone else is using it'.

I can confirm. My parents aren't technical at all. They were confused when I told them people work at Facebook.

ryanlm··on Some Silicon Valley Tech Workers Get Home Loans with No Money Down
Is that so? Why would tech workers be considered elite?
ryanlm··on LastPass autofill exploit
Is someone going to lose their job over this?
ryanlm··on The Uber Engineering Tech Stack, Part I: The Foundation
I just got rejected from them. I applied for a SE position, but they didn't like me I guess. They send you this really condescending rejection letter. I showed them my programming language that I built in C from scratch, and also my data structure library where I implement all the common data structures found in high level languages that I built from scratch in C, among the many projects

I have. It must have been my state school that turned them off. I know I could keep up there, but maybe they also turned me down because I'm 5 states away and they thought I wasn't worth the recruiters time.

edit: downvoter, if you could provide your rationale that would be great.

ryanlm··on Fun with the Windows Subsystem for Linux
I agree. This looks like an elementary Linux tutorial.
ryanlm··on Ask HN: Why is it hard to get a job in California?
I have "hard programming" personal projects. All my projects are in low level C. I have a data structure library, (think C++ stl). I also have a programming language I built in C with an AST, and function calls, variables, all that.
ryanlm··on “Give me 15 minutes and I'll change your view of GDB” [video]
I really feel like a cowboy when I am debugging C with `gdb`
ryanlm··on Lepton image compression: saving 22% losslessly from images at 15MB/s
Someone just had to mention that _stupid_ show. Seriously. By empowering that show, you're just making fun of yourself and all the other programmers on here.
ryanlm··on Asciinema 1.3 Switches from Go Back to Python
It's the same thing in C. Every system call takes at least 4 lines. assign the return value to an int, check the int, then check errno, etc.
ryanlm··on On Being a Black Man
> At a certain point in my life, I realized that I had no positive role models (let alone ones I could relate to), so I > set out to become a positive role model for my siblings.

This is the best part I took from this. I don't believe I have many positive role models in my life that align to my goals.

ryanlm··on Startup Technical Diligence Is a Waste of Time
I understood his communication. He isn't a VC. If a VC asked me that I would know how to make an appropriate response. I'm also not fully aware of what you mean here.
ryanlm··on Asciinema 1.3 Switches from Go Back to Python
Python is the best high level language out there. I wouldn't call golang C 2.0 because it has a GC.
ryanlm··on Startup Technical Diligence Is a Waste of Time
That sounds like this one guy who is trying to get me to work for free for his "company".

"What kind of cyber security does your server have?"

Speaking to me in buzz words is a huge red flag.

ryanlm··on Tell HN: New features and a moderator
I don't want to have to install browser extensions or configure reddit. Seriously I get enough of that by using Linux desktop.
ryanlm··on Tell HN: New features and a moderator
The persistence of collapsing is a killer feature that I wish reddit had.
ryanlm··on Tell HN: Namecheap has hijacked my Domain's name server records
Yes. This is an ICANN rule, but I never received an email from them claiming they are going to hijack the WHOIS record. I'm still fighting with their completely unusable UI to try and figure out how to fix this.
ryanlm··on Tell HN: Namecheap has hijacked my Domain's name server records
Conclusion: Namecheap can't be trusted. And I am now looking for a provider to transfer my 25+ domains.
ryanlm··on Ask HN: Can you recommend advanced books on CSS?
I think you're better off reading the box model spec.
ryanlm··on How Facebook Tries to Prevent Office Politics
Whiners in the interview process seems like a good one. I'm conscious about complaining about a tech stack, or even a build system. It doesn't matter if you don't like it.
ryanlm··on Ask HN: Non tech co founder
He also thinks it's his job to pick the tech platform. He literally thinks he is capable of doing it.

He likes to use buzz words a lot. I think he should be a tech recruiter/salesman

ryanlm··on Ask HN: Non tech co founder
If I ask him those questions, and he becomes offended at the fact, I think that will be a red flag. He seems to think that anything he says can't be questioned...going back to earlier, how he says he doesn't want to argue to get his point across when I asked him about what his role would be.

He said the way I asked it made him offended.

My view is that I touched on one of his weaknesses and it made him insecure about his position in the business.
