ryan42··on Learning a few things about running SQLite
If you're not using them, adding in silk and/or debug toolbar to your django app will be able to get some good automatic reporting and guidance on performance issues.
ryan42··on My midlife crisis Corolla is fast, furious, and modded
fart cannons galore where I live, all hours of night and day. only option is to learn to live with em

my subaru is obnoxious in looks only, I want the exhaust to be normal, lol

ryan42··on Instagram is incorporating users' photos in ads for Meta Glasses
yes, it happened to me recently.

The photo wasn't mine, but showed a profile photo of one of my facebook friends, and it had the glasses and said "On my way!"

ryan42··on Cars collect a startling amount of data about you
Saturn is such a good underdog car brand. Take care of them there aren't too many on the road anymore.

I want to someday get my family car from my childhood if I can find one. 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix

ryan42··on 1966 Ford Mustang Converted into a Tesla with Working 'Full Self-Driving'
Here's one of a fully custom Toyota 4x4 truck getting a Tesla Model 3 motor that I enjoyed. I would love to have a small electric pickup like this, but I don't want to invest $100k to get it done

ryan42··on Claude Code users hitting usage limits 'way faster than expected'
claude automatically enabled "extra usage" on my pro account for me (I had it disabled) and the total got to $49 extra before I noticed. I sent an email asking wtf but I don't expect much.
ryan42··on Never buy a .online domain
yeah same here. I canceled my account on name.com because I had previously obtained a .art domain maybe for ~15-20 USD / yr. Then they wanted $50 USD a year to extend it. No thanks, dropped the domain and moved to namecheap
ryan42··on Early Christian Writings

ryan42··on Doin' It with a 555: One Chip to Rule Them All
I want to build an atari punk console with a 555 to learn basic soldering and electronics, fun stuff
ryan42··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (January 2026)
I thought we were all working on revolutionary AI insights... Right? There's more?

joking aside, I'm working on a mobile app side project for a client that involves camera vision/machine learning in a heavy trucking maintenance context. Very low-ego, blue collar stuff, with a blend of modern tech. That and game dev in Godot engine has brought back my passion for coding greatly that I had lost over the last several years.

ryan42··on Tell HN: I Lost Joy of Programming
I actually brought back some of the joy of programming for myself by leveraging LLMS

Context. I'm burnt out, doing web software development for business apps for 15 years now and going

I started to get into game development. I started to test out chatGPT and claude to assist and it's been going great. I make so much progress and the results are fun which makes the coding process fun. The LLM covers gaps in my knowledge of math and physics and game dev strategy and architecture. But since I know how to code I can take what it gives and accomplish all kinds of things that would be much more difficult going on my own.

ryan42··on Moonbase Alpha: That time NASA made a meme video game

ryan42··on Show HN: I recreated 90s Mode X demoscene effects in JavaScript and Canvas

ryan42··on Making maps with noise functions (2022)
Great stuff, I love the detailed explanations. I'm getting more into making my own games in Godot, and may try to implement this with it!

Also, Realm of the mad god is a great game!

ryan42··on Stoop Coffee: A simple idea transformed my neighborhood
This is cool, it reminds me of some events in my home state.

One is called Porch fest, and it is city-wide event: https://www.carmelporchfest.org/faq

Another is a community event in South Bend, IN where people collectively organized a big art/music event in backyards, that spread and covered a fairly large area. I think it was originally back yards, then someone with a large wooded property moved the event there, as it grew too large? https://www.instagram.com/yart_southbend

Also reminded of porch hangouts that happened by necessity during covid to allow socializing while masked/outdoors to reduce risk of larger groups of people gathering indoors.

ryan42··on An Internet Canvas
I've been using mmm.page to manage a tiny landing page for awhile, I really like its flexibility and ease of use.

It is something I would definitely look into paying for in the future if the site needs to grow into something bigger, or for other projects I want to do.

ryan42··on No Paint
Fun. At first was confused, but then I figured it out.

I present... "spiderface"

ryan42··on U.S. workers hate ‘open’ office spaces
bingo. I can't wait to leave to find my dream job that is outside of IT and Software Development
ryan42··on The Antique Cannabis Book
If samples were around and we measured them, I would guess it would have a lower amount of both CBD and THC compared to today's 'standards'. There are no standards with cannabis though. It's one name for a multitude of species and strains which are aggressively bred and hybridized with many family trees. Now with our modern understanding of the plant, CBD high and THC low species, and THC high and CBD low (more prominent) are bred, along with everything in between.
ryan42··on Where's the Proof That Mindfulness Works?
I love this book so much that I bought the paperback edition. Practicing and following its advice has helped me improve my general mood and outlook over the past year.

The past year being one of the most difficult of my life. For me, I see direct evidence of the techniques personally in that it has been reducing the impact anxiety has on me when it occurs.

Its also been improving my ability to: 1) be 'present' and not have anxiety come up as often to begin with, 2) quickly address/resolve the anxiety when it does occur, using the techniques

ryan42··on Ask HN: Which companies have the best blogs written by their engineering team?

This is a good one

ryan42··on A Brief History of Who Ruined Burning Man
I've never been to BM, but I think there are many art/music festivals which you could go to that are more accessible and very similar themes and things happening burning man has, but on a smaller scale. I just attended my first "art/music" focused festival a few weeks ago. It had meditation/yoga/various educational workshops, artists displaying all different kinds of wares for sale, people trading and giving small things freely (think shared water, wristbands, food, trinket). There was a rock that had a sign, purposed to "give something, take something". The downsides were there too. Lots of people just there for the music/drugs/party aspect or whatever. There are probably 100's of alternatives to burning man - regional burns and music/art festivals, that are much more accessible to get to and experience. Most are 2-3 days long, and that is more like prepping for a regular camping trip than something the scale of burning man.
ryan42··on It is now legal for US firms to start using drones in a limited manner
my friend works at a startup that will likely be one of the first flying drones commercially outside of line of sight :)

ryan42··on The mystery of the 'legal name fraud' billboards
I did computer repair a long time ago for a friend of the family. He was all into believing this stuff and I was forced to listen to it for about an hour or so. Pretty weird stuff. He thought he could use the concept to get out of debts and speeding tickets, etc.
ryan42··on Show HN: Simple and elegant Markdown-based resumes
I've used Markdown Resume Builder before (http://there4development.com/markdown-resume/) and aside from sometimes fighting with a few layout issues it is great.

From a markdown source file it produces a pretty clean PDF/html version of my resume and can choose from multiple preset styles.

ryan42··on Tatsuo Horiuchi: The 73-year old Excel spreadsheet artist (2013)
“Graphics software is expensive but Excel comes pre-installed in most computers." Both of these are false. There are plenty of freeware programs that allow a user to draw vector or pixel shapes. Excel/Office has not come preinstalled on any computers I've seen in many years.
ryan42··on Teeworlds for Mac, Windows, and Linux
This has become our go-to game for after work gaming/drinking sessions. It's very accessible to download in 5 minutes and start playing right away.
ryan42··on Trademark: How Square Inc. shut down an event-finding mobile app
SquareJive was founded inside of the office that I work in. I personally knew all the founders, and even considered joining to help early on. I followed it from the idea stage to the end, and even though I was not deeply involved in it, I am very much affected by the outcome of everything. I am very upset to see the way things went at the hands of Square, Inc. It blows my mind that Square, on the surface, seems like a great service/company to work with. Yet, they go and do something like this out of public view. I wish this was getting more visibility on HN. I already started using an alternative myself and I'm going to do what I can to convince other small businesses taking mobile payments not to support Square anymore.
ryan42··on Mark Zuckerberg's first website is still on Angelfire
exactly.. it would fade your text with a color gradient for the aol chat rooms. I wrote some with visual basic when I was in high school.
