rwwmike··on Facebook Questions Goes Where Quora Can't
Maybe you can connect with friends on Quora and maybe you can ask specific people questions, but Facebook Questions is gonna far outpace Quora for asking your friends simple questions.
rwwmike··on What HP Really Announced: A Battle With Google Over the Cloud
Agreed. HP is pretty behind. Sure, they put out a ridiculous number of devices when you count computers and printers, but I think I have ONE friend using a Palm phone...though some folks are now even recommending the TouchPad over the iPad 2.0

HP is definitely showing some commitment to an idea here, though.

rwwmike··on IPad 2.0: Can Faster, Thinner, Lighter Compete with Android Tablets?
Biased? As in not completely accepting of the idea that everything Apple does automatically wins? You "expect more from RWW"? Really?
rwwmike··on IPad 2.0: Can Faster, Thinner, Lighter Compete with Android Tablets?
WSJ had "the inside scoop"? Really? An entire story based on the fact that the next iPad is going to be lighter, faster and thinner? That's the silly part.
rwwmike··on How Al Jazeera Is Using Promoted Tweets & Trends to Get Into U.S. Markets
I wrote the article. I wasn't thinking at all about "user engagement." I was thinking "Look, there's another article on this same thing, and that one takes issue with this method." And then I thought, "I don't see any issue at all."
rwwmike··on I Worked on the AOL Content Farm & It Changed My Life
Marshall Kirkpatrick, ReadWriteWeb co-editor, got his start...

[I think Marshall might keel over if he heard you call him that.] :)

rwwmike··on Facebook's next big media move: Comments
This is what I've been wondering ALL DAY.
rwwmike··on Looking for a Ride to SXSW? Get on the Startup Bus
Gotta say - doesn't matter if you're in or not at SXSW. Maybe for the interactive, you can't go to the panels...but there's parties..and then during music? There's so much free stuff all over the city it's insane.
rwwmike··on Looking for a Ride to SXSW? Get on the Startup Bus
Aww hell, and I already booked my flight.
rwwmike··on Facebook & Identity: The Continued Push Toward Becoming Your One True Login
Part of what Facebook has done has continually push what we're willing to share online, I think. And really, the entire Internet has changed what we're willing to share online, not just Facebook. As we're able to do more and more online, we need to provide more and more information online. It's just whether or not that information remains under our control that's really the big question, I think.
rwwmike··on Facebook Now Shares Phone Number & Address With Third-Party Apps
Here's the follow-up story...

rwwmike··on Facebook Now Shares Phone Number & Address With Third-Party Apps
You are correct. I write for ReadWriteWeb, wrote the article and I think that the URL has that code in it because I clicked on the Hacker News button on the article to share it.

:)

rwwmike··on Facebook Now Shares Phone Number & Address With Third-Party Apps
Who owns your online identity is a completely different thing than letting this sort of contact information leak through the carelessness of your friends. Other profile information of yours, if you don't correct FB's settings, can be given to third-parties by way of your friend saying okay.

That is, thankfully your friend can't decide they want to share there contact information with some app and vicariously share yours too.

Big difference.

rwwmike··on Facebook Now Shares Phone Number & Address With Third-Party Apps
1) With many permission requests, there will be far more than just two items on the screen. Look at other dialog boxes for FB permission - just one or two options is not the norm, it's just the example...
rwwmike··on Google TV Jailbreak Opens the Doors to Developers, Hulu
Hackers + Google TV units = cool ass shit, IMHO.
rwwmike··on CES 2011: Internet-connected, "appified" everything & a Google/Apple TV killer?
I really expect SnapStick to come out with some stuff that is going to put some of these screen-specific technologies on their knees.

You can't watch network websites or basic Hulu? How long can that really fly?

rwwmike··on Wikipedia Raises $16 Million to Remain Ad-Free
FYI: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fundraising_2010/Banner_testi...
rwwmike··on Netflix: We're Working On HTML5 Standard to Bring Streaming Video to All Devices
The part I didn't really include is their list of 7 requirements, which are... 1-The acceptable A/V container formats (e.g. Fragmented MP4, WebM, etc.); 2-The acceptable audio and video codecs (e.g. H.264, VP8, AAC, etc.); 3-The streaming protocol (e.g. HTTP, RTP, etc.); 4-A way for the streaming protocol to adapt to available bandwidth; 5-A way of conveying information about available streams and other parameters to the streaming player module; 6-A way of supporting protected content (e.g. with DRM systems); 7-A way of exposing all this functionality into HTML5

So...yeah, definitely DRM. And not coy, as you point out.

rwwmike··on Top Real-Time Web Products of 2010
What I really want to know is, what did I leave out? And how long is it until "real-time" is a given? Sorta like calling something "social"?
rwwmike··on Spamhaus under DDOS from AnonOps
Interesting, I just looked into this the other day. http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/wikileaksorg_is_back_up...

Just reached out to the owner of mirror.wikileaks.info

I think there's a lot of assumption going on here in terms of who is in charge of what and who's responsible...

rwwmike··on Wikipedia Has Raised in a Week What Took a Month in 2009
Ads, when not overdone, really just don't phase me honestly.

I tune them out.

rwwmike··on Facebook bug disables women's accounts, asks for government ID, fix in process
I agree. Facebook having complete ownership and control over my identity is a scary thought. The site is far too reckless and cavalier with its banning of people, business sites, apps, etc. I've read far too many accounts of banishments without any given reason or response to complaints...
rwwmike··on Facebook bug disables women's accounts, asks for government ID, fix in process
Actually, that's not at ALL why I wrote that. I wrote that because I found it hard to not wonder if the two things were connected. Suddenly, user names are becoming @facebook.com email addresses.

I also wrote this line before Facebook ever responded to our questions (which they did just a moment before posting) and didn't remove it. Before the explanation, Boy Genius Report was speculating that it was a hack because of the request for a government ID. A quick Google search showed that a government ID request seemed to be a standard thing when Facebook wants to reactivate certain accounts, so I figured that wasn't the case and postulated that perhaps it had to do with Facebooks latest change...its messaging system.

The only reason I ever put links into a story is so that if you don't know about that, and it's readily accessible, you don't need to search for it. :)

rwwmike··on The Story Behind "Free Public WiFi" - It's Not
I still want to believe that, somewhere out there, there actually is Free Public WiFi...
