rwolf··on Tokens Too Cheap to Meter
for the first chart (sourced from https://epoch.ai/data/machine-learning-hardware?view=graph&y...), what is the audience supposed to think about that trend line? there's a step after you slap a regression on some points where you evaluate whether there's a real trend or noise, right? i don't see that either in the article or the linked source.
rwolf··on LLMs are steroids for your Dunning-Kruger
"all the time" in this context means frequently, not constantly, and is usually understood as a global rate.

for example: people fall in love all the time.

rwolf··on OpenIndiana: Community-Driven Illumos Distribution
https://docs.openindiana.org/misc/openindiana/ looks like what you wanted, was not straightforward to get there from the homepage.
rwolf··on Show HN: 2ndWind - Find people to work on your unfinished projects
To elaborate of the commenter above, here's what I tried to try to get some information about this site:

* Looked at the top and bottom nav for a link to something like a blog or an about page.

* Searching for [2ndwind] brings up tons of athletics links.

* Tried visiting both /about and /blog to see if there was more content, just hidden.

The poster including more information about the site than is in the real <title> makes it seem like they know more. If you do: please summarize what this page is.

rwolf··on How to Make Vegan Butter
For anyone (like me) who raised an eyebrow at the "trans fats are highly toxic" bit, wiki helpfully mentions some recent (2013) FDA guidance on the matter: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans_fat
rwolf··on Effects of retroactive prayer on outcomes in patients with infection (2001)
Note the timestamp on the article and compare to: http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2014/12/the-et...
rwolf··on Crowdfunding the Novena Open Laptop
Thinkpad keyboard only appears to come with $5,000 limited-run version, and it's detachable. Every other version explicitly does not come with a keyboard because of how little consensus there is.
rwolf··on Show HN: Late night hack to send out New Years tweet
buffer -> http://bufferapp.com/. nothing to fix, just someone deciding that, since someone has done X, no one else should do X.

congrats on making something! happy new year.

rwolf··on Why Does Windows Have Terrible Battery Life?
I'm puzzled, your comments seem to claim simultaneously that:

* There is not a battery life problem on Windows machines.

* The battery life problem on Windows machines is not surprising.

rwolf··on Duck Duck Go is blowing up again
Default switch happened in August https://people.gnome.org/~csaavedra/news-2013-08.html while spike appeared to start 2 months previous.
rwolf··on Microsoft Surface vs. iPad and Linode
I'm curious if the problem here is splashtop--does it work when you go to cafes with spotty wifi? For example, running vim from an ec2 instance might give you better connectivity.
rwolf··on They're using Windows RT
4.5% tablet marketshare (http://www.winbeta.org/news/windows-8-and-windows-rt-account...) is tiny, but big enough to account for anecdotes like this.
rwolf··on Dora, Diego, SpongeBob and Other Viacom Shows Leave Netflix
In the "pros" column, you're just violating netflix TOS so in the worst case they figure out you are lying about your country and delete your account. Sounds like a pretty safe (but expensive) way to pirate movies to me.
rwolf··on Dora, Diego, SpongeBob and Other Viacom Shows Leave Netflix
Right, there's not a legal way to subscribe so you're illegally subscribing. For the children, or something.
rwolf··on Designing blogs for readers
You weren't actually asking for comments, so sorry if I'm just being annoying, but:

* I love the font size and content column width. More line height than 140% might be good, but I then again have extreme preferences for line height (160%).

* Consider not paginating the posts, or picking a higher limit. You currently have 1 more than you show on the first page, so why not show it on page 1?

* The big image on the search page is funny, but takes a very long time to load. Removing it or moving it to a CDN will make loading that page faster.

* text-align: justify is your friend! Thin columns look weird with right-aligned text.

rwolf··on Show HN: Notforest - cleaning up the Web one page at a time
<3!

Thank you for making this, and please please please don't "pivot" from a bookmarklet into another half-baked social network.

rwolf··on What is the name of this operator: “--”?
The title is missing a >. Should be "-->"
rwolf··on Verizon is Selling Your Personal Data
No requests are sent when I hit the "Save Changes" button. I have a small amount of confidence that my preferences are going to be picked up.
rwolf··on Netbot: An App.net Client from Tweetbot Creators
It's important to note the careful hedging in that response. Specifically:

* Activity Streams will be read-only, except through their (non-ostatus) API.

* No subscribing through pubsubhubbub "initially." It implies but does not promise eventually subscribing.

* Similar to streams, webfinger will be published but not consumed.

* From context, the final clause about inbound and outbound syndication is through some non-ostatus mechanism.

rwolf··on How to bypass iTunes music previews protection
Sorry for the tangent, but svbtle knockoffs like the http://wp-svbtle.themeskult.com/ used here are annoying.

I don't want the whole internet to look like svbtle. Heck, I don't even want svbtle to look like svbtle.

rwolf··on Google Bans Online Anonymity While Patenting It
Citation needed.
rwolf··on Show HN: A Monthly Tee from your favorite YC startup
I never thought I'd say this, but that page is too orange.
rwolf··on ‘Friends’ can share your Facebook profile with the government, court rules
This sounds like snake oil. I'd love to read more about it--any sources for "profile picture as EULA"?
rwolf··on France backs away from Hadopi
"Hadopi, the body charged with hunting down freetards under France’s three-strikes law, has sent a million warning e-mails and 99,000 registered letters."

Did The Register really just say "freetards?"

rwolf··on Orbitz shows costlier hotel options to Mac users
Your phrasing here suggests that you work for orbitz or a similar company. Is that accurate?
rwolf··on Spikability - An Application's Ability to Handle Load
I'm confused: how do you use message queues to handle traffic spikes? If a user request is sitting in a queue, aren't they staring at a white screen until I get back to them?

edit: "And you can launch more servers to eat away at the queues if they keep growing." sounds a lot like autoscaling to me. The graph is misleading.

rwolf··on Behind a Backend-as-a-Service Provider: The How and Why of Our Architecture.
Seconded. Nothing happens when I click join, and there is an error "no zlib library" in the console.
rwolf··on Behind a Backend-as-a-Service Provider: The How and Why of Our Architecture.
I like the apologetics for node.js in the first section. a similar argument for why you are using jruby instead of node.js for the "backend whatchamajigs" would be nice.
rwolf··on Microsoft paid Nokia $250m for Windows Phone use
I too was interested in the daringfireball comparison:

* http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/winsupersite.com

* http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/daringfireball.net

At about twice the rank and 3 times the inbound links, it looks like Reality itself is a fanboy.

rwolf··on Anon Bringing Down Facebook
I noticed slow (>2 minute) load times for about a 5 minutes period, but now it's responding quickly again
