rwebb··on Mark Zuckerberg won't rule out competing with independent apps
I think I would be pretty happy with his performance thus far if I were an investor. Anything he says about anything is going to either blow up in his face or come back to bite him in the ass. Saying nothing and continuing to have explosive growth and app development along with massive valuations seems like a pretty good way to handle things.
rwebb··on Ask News.YC: Best Online Incorporation Service?
Most law firms use CT or CSC. The important part of incorporating is not just being recognized by a state, but everything else that goes along with it when you do it properly (bylaws, ownership, etc.). If you are at the point where you need to incorporate, you need to do this other stuff too and should probably talk to a lawyer that works with small companies regularly.
rwebb··on There's less to Facebook and other social networks than meets the eye
22% of Canada uses Facebook.

The next 5:

Norway: 18.68%

UK: 10.58%

Sweden: 9.09%

Australia: 6.64%

United States: 6.57%

Those numbers are silly.

We're looking for good examples of sticky signup processes. Asking users for the 'fun' info and sneaking in the necessary nuts, blots, and email confirmation later seems like a good way to go. Thoughts? Examples?

Thanks - this is on our to-do list as well. You could use SpringWidgets now but we'll probably make a Digg type widget down the road and let bloggers embed referral codes in it.

Good point!

That's definitely what folks are saying here. Our next big challenge is to make the random people who have information our buyers are looking for comfortable when they come to the site. These are generally folks with little or no net acumen that we've contacted out of the blue. If making an uber sleek web 2.0 landing page is the way to make them comfortable, then we'll absolutely do that.
rwebb··on KnowledgeBid - YC applicant - looking for feedback
Ah yes, that does clarify things. We've helped our buyers write their first listings, so that's probably why they look similar. The steps that buyers go through prompt them for specific data points that help them create complete listings, but the description you are referring to is just a text field. It's interesting that you were scanning those - I just did as well and the similarity of the text jumped out at me too. Thanks for the feedback!

ha! how could we remove stephanie!? also, our target users have just gotten used to using "late 90's web stores" :)

seriously though, we're trying to figure out how to make people feel comfortable when they come to the site. we ask for a lot of information and are presenting them with a pretty ridiculous proposition. i'm not sure if stephanie gives us more or less credibility, but it does put a human (albeit stock photo) face on there at least. figuring out how to get people comfortable with us and what we do is definitely one of our next big challenges.

rwebb··on KnowledgeBid - YC applicant - looking for feedback
Ah that's a good catch. Thanks! We should note that the name on your driver's license is preferred. The system can actually disambiguate pretty well (I go by a random name and it asks me clarification right away) but it obviously doesn't work all the time.

We just reset your account so you can try to authenticate again with your official name if you like.

rwebb··on KnowledgeBid - YC applicant - looking for feedback
thanks? my sarcasm meter is broken. i have no idea if you are serious.

...add in a little VoIP and identity authentication and you've got it.

clean up is definitely on our to-do list.

thanks!

rwebb··on KnowledgeBid - YC applicant - looking for feedback
Thanks for the feedback - definitely a consistent message here that it's too busy.
rwebb··on KnowledgeBid - YC applicant - looking for feedback
there's a set process buyers go through to create a listing. not sure if that's what you mean by template...also not sure what you mean by blurring buyers together...
rwebb··on KnowledgeBid - YC applicant - looking for feedback
about half of the current listings came from our beta group of buyers, the other half we put up and are based on what we came across in our market research. we are only promoting the listings that are from our buyers though. if we received a legit bid on one of the other listings, we probably would accept the bid and talk to the person about how they happened across the site, what was confusing, what they liked, etc.
rwebb··on KnowledgeBid - YC applicant - looking for feedback
awesome feedback. you are 100% right about trying to cover all the bases. our testing has shown that people don't read anything unless they have to, so putting the actual guts of the market in front of people helps them figure out what is going on.
rwebb··on KnowledgeBid - YC applicant - looking for feedback
hey thanks! that's great to hear. we played around with a bunch and thought those were best.
rwebb··on KnowledgeBid - YC applicant - looking for feedback
the site has been live for a couple of weeks but we haven't told anyone except potential sellers/consultants. we have a small number of buyers and are limiting to that for the time being.
rwebb··on TerraCycle - first mass-produced consumer product to have a negative environmental footprint
that's a really cool company with a really cool story. there was an article in the times or something about them a while back. i was skeptical at first, but what they're doing is really cool.
rwebb··on document.f.q.focus(); The Billion Dollar Line of JavaScript
"At an average cost of $5 per click this adds up to maybe $500 per day in revenue for Google just for this one search. Multiply across 365 days and taking a very conservative guess that this happens across 10,000 different domains gives over $1.8 billion in yearly revenue for Google."

clearly!

rwebb··on Ask YC: your google adwords experience?
google has jacked minimum bids through the roof over the last 6 - 12 months. i'm guessing all of your ads are actually inactive right now because your minimum bid is too low and you have a bad "quality score". Their UI is sort of a pain.

login -> click into your campaign -> click into your ad group -> on the set of tabs to the right, click "keywords". here i'm guessing you'll see that your campaigns are inactive and you have to bid between $5 and $10 per click...which I'm guessing will be prohibitive. 9 months ago you just had to bid the minimum and you would end up paying <$1 per click, but now you will actually pay $5 - $10 per click.

the crazy thing is that there is zero transparency into this market. funds try to bet every quarter on google's earnings based on comscore, etc. but they have no idea what the average CPC is doing. it's like betting on Exxon based on car usage w/o knowing the price per gallon.
