rwalker··on How YesGraph Grew 10X in 100 Days
I think an interesting point alluded to by the last paragraph is that hitting goals also depends on setting the right ones at the right times.

Sounds like YesGraph isn't planning to immediately repeat the 10X in 100 days goal because the right goal for the next 100 days is instead to expand the product so that it can support another 10X later on.

Are you organizing the next 100 days around a similarly ambitious and measurable goal?

rwalker··on Open source style checker for Objective C
Completely agree that reformat beats style checking. I think reformat also subsumes style checking from a code complexity perspective, so consider this a step on that path. Launch and iterate.

As for the rest of your comment: we've been using this thing for 9 months. It has made us more productive. It's made it easier to onboard new people in to the code base. It doesn't cost much - you pretty quickly stop seeing errors as you get used to the conventions. By letting a script worry about these admittedly less important details we have MORE time to talk about exceptions, libraries, locking, etc.

So, while in theory much of your comment sounds true, I can state very conclusively that in practice it hasn't happened the way you suggest.

(Also, naming conventions and documentation are important things enforced by the script. Maybe you didn't see part? I'll make it clearer in the README.)

For JavaScript, one option is the Closure Linter

(disclaimer: I helped write this when I was working there)

rwalker··on Open source style checker for Objective C
Given that context switching is one of the core costs of day to day software development, it's hard to overstate how valuable it is to have code across the code base feel "familiar". Little details add up to make a bigger difference than you might expect. I'm not alone in feeling this way - take a look at Google's extensive programming style guidelines some time.

https://code.google.com/p/google-styleguide/

Of course, the better answer (and we'll build it at some point) is something like gofmt so that you don't have to worry about this stuff at all.

rwalker··on Open source style checker for Objective C
I'm a big believer in automating process where possible - instead of trying to remember style rules or dealing with inconsistent code across a codebase, just write a script to deal with it!

This one was particularly fun to write because it was an excuse to use the awesome parcon library (http://www.opengroove.org/parcon/parcon-tutorial.html)

Cue (http://www.cueup.com), San Francisco, full time + interns

At Cue we connect our users with the right piece of information at the right time by understanding and correlating related data from across their email, contacts, calendar, files, and social streams.

This is a really hard problem with real world impact. Our software processes billions of documents in real time, extracts semantics from text, and searches across disparate document sets and document types. I also honestly believe our product has the opportunity to change the world by making everyone in it more productive. We've built everything with a team of only 12: 10 eng, 1 designer, 1 everything else.

We're hiring all manner of engineers and engineering interns - generalists, devops, iOS, Android, NLP, ML. We primarily use Python, Java, JavaScript, and Objective-C but we always love to talk to people with great general skills over specific knowledge.

rwalker··on Colossal Cue Adventure: a Zork-style text-based programming adventure game
Fixed most of these. "use switch" and "flip switch" both work, and now "pull switch" does too. "enter door" works now.

changing get will take a little more work, so for now I just aliased it to take.

"go north" is already in the game, just later...

really appreciate the feedback!

rwalker··on Colossal Cue Adventure: a Zork-style text-based programming adventure game
Added those now as well! (and, yes, that and as a complement to the fission verb)

Do you mean scrollback across refreshes or something else? (you can email me at robbyw@cueup.com since HN will start time-limiting our conversation at this depth)

rwalker··on Colossal Cue Adventure: a Zork-style text-based programming adventure game
Not at the moment, but with enough interest, it's something we could do at some point.
