rvp-x··on On the Loss of a Cofounder
They get disability benefits towards financing care, or subsidization towards hiring a full time caregiver.
rvp-x··on On the Loss of a Cofounder
It's very expensive to support dementia patients. They need as much care as a baby, but have adult weight and capabilities. You might be in trouble even in a country with a great support system. You need to have someone there every single day for most of the waking hours.
rvp-x··on Covid-19, duration of viral shedding, and infectiousness: meta-analysis
Not in .il, because of mass-testing efforts and people needing to show a negative result before travel and having no reason to believe they are positive.

Quarantine is mandatory if you had exposure or returned from abroad.

rvp-x··on Starting January 4 Google will block sign-ins from embedded browser frameworks
Worth noting that Google's browser, Chrome, spoofs Firefox and Safari.
rvp-x··on ARM chips have an instruction with JavaScript in the name
There is one CPU that exposes its out of order inner workings, the VIA C3 ("ALTINST"). The unintended effects are so bad that people that accidentally discovered it referred to it as a backdoor: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternate_Instruction_Set
rvp-x··on Fighting for the right to repair your own stuff
The price threshold for repairing stuff in the west is simply a bit higher. Would you like to be limited to just the car shop that's certified by your car manufacturer for car repairs?

I had a phone with a user-serviceable battery. It took no special parts to replace it. And so I used a machine that otherwise would've gone to electronic waste for several more years.

rvp-x··on Default window manager switched to CTWM in NetBSD-current
I do. If you are a few years behind the latest GPU/wifi then there's a good chance your hardware will just work.

It takes longer than usual to get a comfortable setup, but once you do it once it's very easy to keep the same for years/decades unchanged.

There's not much proprietary software, and the way to do things is usually the bare bones one. If you want to run linux virtualized, you can do it using QEMU+NVMM, but there won't be a fancy GUI like VirtualBox. You might need to change some boot parameters too.

People often run it on arm64, which has unusually good hardware support (it might have support for things faster than linux mainline kernel).

rvp-x··on How to Drive on Sand Without Getting Stuck (2017)
I'm about 5km inland and it's still hella sandy. No turtles for a while.
rvp-x··on Remote Work Is Killing the Hidden Trillion-Dollar Office Economy
That's more to do with living in a bad area.
rvp-x··on Degoogle: Cutting Google out of your life
Here's a report that a Googler used their vast data to spy on and harass people, including minors: https://techcrunch.com/2010/09/14/google-engineer-spying-fir...
rvp-x··on The cost of 1GB of mobile data in 228 countries (Feb 2020)
Israel managed to significantly lower the rates with the introduction of the following changes:

- Ban on SIM-locking of phones to one provider

- Allowing users to change providers without losing their phone number

- Ban on "exit penalties" for customers leaving a contract

- Forcing existing infrastructure providers to share their infrastructure with virtual or not-yet-fully-deployed new providers

rvp-x··on No net insect abundance and diversity declines across US
I am under the impression that rain forests are primarily burned down for cattle ranching or cattle feed.
rvp-x··on Georgia School Reopening Photo Even Worse Than It Appears
In my country after a small number of students from one school tested positive they sent everyone to quarantine and tested them. They reached 220 cases in total. This school doesn't have mandatory masks, it didn't shut down, and it isn't quarantining the close contacts of those infected. They are all going to have COVID-19.
rvp-x··on Ask HN: What’s your daily/weekly routine?
Wake up at 9-10am, have a cup of coffee while reading some emails (gotta get that work time counter ticking).

After an hour or two I make breakfast (usually olive oil + egg + tortilla).

After 4-5 work hours I start to look at social media too much and take a break to make lunch / read personal email / nap.

Get back to work in the afternoon for meetings, take a break at 7pm for sunset walk/run/cycle. It's the best time to be out.

Finish remaining work hours then watch videos / chat with friends. if I'm not drained I might do some errands or work on my hobby projects.

I usually visit family on the weekends and try to spend some time away from a computer.

rvp-x··on The World That Twitter Made
It's true that simply having 30,000 people with a quick reply button creates negative interactions, Twitter is also a website that makes money from advertising, and people watch more ads if they're "engaged". This incentivizes the website to show your content to people who will disagree with it.
rvp-x··on Initial Covid-19 infection rate may be 80 times greater than originally reported
I know a lot of people who had COVID-19. I suspect I know mostly people who are healthier and young, so they don't get seriously ill.
rvp-x··on Fakecracker: NetBSD as a Function Based MicroVM
Someone compiled NetBSD (rump) to JavaScript before WASM was a thing :-) https://blog.netbsd.org/tnf/entry/kernel_drivers_compiled_to...

The link seems to be down, I found this as a replacement http://197.155.77.5/NetBSD/misc/pooka/rump.js/

rvp-x··on Apple, ARM, and Intel
High-end ARM servers support standards called "SBBR" and "SBSA" which means they support UEFI and ACPI. The experience of using them is not very different from using x86 machines: boot an arbitrary OS and almost everything works.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Server_Base_System_Architectur...

There's an effort to make even the Raspberry Pi support this standard: https://rpi4-uefi.dev/

rvp-x··on Intermittent fasting works – not only for weight loss but also for heart health
I had similar issues removing added sugar from my regular meals.

If the bitterness is what bothers you, get beans that are lightly roasted. The bitterness comes from roasting it dark.

rvp-x··on U.S. states lean toward breaking up Google's ad tech business
Microsoft used to have licensing deals with Android phone manufacturers for their use of FAT, it was just bundled in the cost of the phones sold.

With the choice of Android effectively costing them $5-15 per device sold, manufacturers still chose it.

rvp-x··on Ask HN: How do I reach making $1-1.5k/mo in 13 months?
I had very few job offers originate from FOSS (maybe 2 in 4 years?). I suspect there's a narrow field where people recruit using FOSS/GitHub and I'm not involved in it. JavaScript based projects seem to be doing much better from an outsider perspective.

I got more out of having a decent looking LinkedIn account.

rvp-x··on Vitamin D: the New Covid-19 Chloroquine?
I assume this is a related newspaper article: https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families...

Important to note it refers to overweight (might be referred to as "a little chubby"), not obese.

rvp-x··on University of California Will Stop Using SAT, ACT
I can see a future cynical me talking about how brutal it is to lure poor students and have them take loans to pay first year tuition only to kick them out a year later with nothing to show for it, if they're not the top 1/3 for some reason.
rvp-x··on OpenBSD 6.7
Presumably something like CoreOS which makes extensive use of containers and any security feature it can get its hands on.

If I personally put my own opinion on it, I don't like unnecessary use of containers because the model gives you a lot of outdated dependencies, and I'm not sure whether containing a vulnerability once it happens is that noteworthy.

Old skool "use good, secure code. update dependencies" and not focusing on containing a vulnerability produces a much safer system IMO.

rvp-x··on CEO of Banjo admitted to being a Neo-Nazi skinhead in his youth
Shooting up a symbolic religious building is an indiscriminate hate crime. He intended to hurt more than just the specific individuals that were in the building at the time, he meant to make an entire community of people with a similar background afraid.
rvp-x··on CEO of Banjo admitted to being a Neo-Nazi skinhead in his youth
A bigger question is how is one allowed to join the navy after taking part in a racially motivated drive-by shooting?
rvp-x··on The many languages missing from the internet
If I have an audience that entirely speaks the language I try to take advantage of it. It's very common here for people to use English unconditionally in conversations about technology.
rvp-x··on Ask HN: Who Is Firing?
I'm in neither of those places and we have a dramatic increase in unemployment (4% -> 26%), mostly furloughed employees. The local government is encouraging it probably because they don't need any special new legislation or methods to provide unemployment benefits.
rvp-x··on The many languages missing from the internet
I make an active effort to use my native language whenever I get an opportunity to do so. I see it as an accessibility feature. Much easier to understand things when they're in your native language.
rvp-x··on Ending coronavirus lockdowns will be a dangerous process of trial and error
The best time to act was a month ago, the second best time is now.
