rustymonday··on Leaked grant proposal details high-risk coronavirus research
Exactly. It likely wasn't made in a lab, but it likely did escape from the lab accidentally.
rustymonday··on Archaeologists Discover 'Lost Golden City of Luxor'
In the case of Egypt it's mostly wind-blown sand and dust. But deposition can also be caused by river sedimentation during floods.

In non-desert areas, dead biomass (fallen leaves, etc.) creates soil. My parents had a stone path through their yard that they didn't maintain, and within a decade it was covered over with soil and grass grew over it.

Over the course of a few thousand years, structures can be buried by several meters of earth.

rustymonday··on ImageNet contains naturally occurring Apple NeuralHash collisions
I'm so glad you said this.

As someone not in the tech field, it is incredibly concerning that half the people here on Hacker News, people who help build this kind of technology, do not seem to be concerned with what Apple is doing.

rustymonday··on Security Threat Model Review of the Apple Child Safety Features [pdf]
When I use a web service, I expect my data to be collected by the service, especially if it is free of charge.

A device I own should not be allowed to collect and scan my data without my permission.

Is this really surprising to you? I'm not trying to be rude, but this is an enormous distinction. In today's world, smartphones are basically an appendage of your body. They should not work to potentially incriminate its owner.
rustymonday··on UFOs: 'These objects show physics we don't understand'
I really do not understand the stigma behind UFOs. There is evidence of sightings for millennia all over the world, even before the invention of aircraft.

rustymonday··on UFOs: 'These objects show physics we don't understand'
The Pentagon released a preliminary report [1] two weeks ago stating that UAPs (their term for UFOs) are physical objects and demonstrate advanced capabilities that the US Navy cannot explain.

rustymonday··on Getting High-Speed Rail Wrong
It makes most sense to me for rails to be built in the interstate medians. You see this in Chicago, and could be done elsewhere relatively easily as its already government owned land. As a bonus, car commuters could see how much faster HSR might be than their normal commute.
rustymonday··on Tokyo Olympics “looking at a cancellation” if coronavirus not contained
I don't know how you could conclude they did not fuck up when they imprisoned doctors who blew the whistle on the outbreak.

That's not to say other countries will fare much better. But China had by far the best chance at containment, and they blew it. And the rest of the world has to deal with the fallout.
