russtrotter··on U.S. Meat Supply Is 'Perilously Close' to a Shortage, CEO Warns
If this was a simple change of preferences due to all the vegan/vegetarian talking points, I could agree with your premise. The thing I wonder about C19 is that what kinds of agricultural processes involve humans ensuring that beans/corn/greens/starches get from the fields into produce aisles and cans? The same reasoning on shutting down production for infection risk applies there as well.
russtrotter··on Xv6, a simple Unix-like teaching operating system
I remember learning RE in the context of finite automata so I'm gathering that they are questioning the novelty of that implementation strategy?
russtrotter··on I love coding in C
For as much as it seems comical, I enjoy languages like Java and C# so much because while I cut my teeth on lots of C (then C++) from the early 90's onward, once the web began to drive so much development, you needed to be able to sling strings (with first-class Unicode support) around.

When I was learning C++, a popular idiom to employ was to use it as "a better C". Don't make your own classes, but leverage good "string" impls, templates, namespaces, declaration semantics, RAII, etc, basically stuff that just your C... better.

I can appreciate good nostalgia, but I can't help but think i'd be pining for some of those betternesses that came along later.

russtrotter··on TheForger's Win32 API Programming Tutorial
I cut my teeth on making the jump from turbo pascal programs to GUI via the Win32 API. Its "rawness" felt fun, i.e. slinging around "long" pointers to stuff and big event handling switch statement state machines. As long as you didn't misbehave in the message loop, you could just kinda tinker endlessly. As both the UI evolved to many more complicated controls and the toolset was getting more abstract, I'd always find myself asking "dangit! i wish i could just get the UUID for the control that does the fizzywizzybizbang control that i see in Excel here!" Maybe that mindset is akin to a modern UI developer buried in quirksmode.org and their browser console debugger.
russtrotter··on GitHub Outage Currently Ongoing – Issues, PRs, Notifications
I did this for the first time 2 days ago on two medium-size GH repos and it while was crazy slow, it eventually completed after about 8 hours or so. The actual bits seemed to finish in a relatively quick amount of time, but the project landing page continually showed "import in progress" for all those 8 hours.
russtrotter··on My MacBook Pro exploded and burst into flames
I'm sitting here typing this response on a 2016 MBP (the first gen with the butterfly keyboard and touchbar). Due to some thermal issues, I unscrewed the cover to blow the dust out and discovered my batteries are all swelling. Yikes. I wonder if there's a follow-on recall in a year or so for this generation. I bought a battery replace kit from ifixit so I might kick the can down the road for a bit longer, time will tell.

More broadly thinking though, Unix/BSD underpinnings OS, driver support, and hardware that sacrificed thin/light for components that were reliable and some DIY capability? I kid can dream

russtrotter··on MapR may shut down as investor pulls out after ‘extremely poor results’
AFAIK, AWS's EMR and Glue leverage Hadoop under the covers. Does that count towards that market? and/or at least keeping Hadoop development active?
russtrotter··on Adventures with ffmpeg and color ranges
I don't think the statement is entirely unreasonable given that JC is a facebook employee, he's one of the tech masterminds behind their VR initiatives and the optics of having the tech face of Occulus dog-food your social media platform is important to at least some of the brass there.
russtrotter··on On Learning Rust and Go: Migrating Away from Python
I'd say, all things being equal, yes, choose languages on tech merit or suitability to task. But look at what's happening with Java and Oracle's handling of it. I think the Google vs Oracle lawsuit is still going through appeal. Ask Google if they wish in hindsight they'd built Android on something else.
russtrotter··on Why Not Make?
While make, for me, fell out of day-to-day use once C/C++ projects waned, it's still a great and powerful tool. I really appreciate its consistency to a Unix philosophy where it provides the essential feature of target building through dependencies but leaves so much of the heaving lifting through good ole /bin/sh.
russtrotter··on Low-fat diet could kill you, major study shows
seems like articles like this are always read as justification for KFC, butter, cheese and burgers rather than "hey maybe eating all those nuts and avocados is a good idea???"
russtrotter··on Signal intelligence 101: SIGINT targets
Fascinating read, but i'd be lying if the old Unix nerd in me initially thought this was about signal(3)
russtrotter··on JSON Web Tokens should be avoided
That approach is generally how many web platforms do their server-side session management. As with anything that is more or less home-grown (vs using that platform session implementation), you'll want to ask yourself: 1) how easy can my UUID be spoofed? 2) can i revoke/invalidate/logout my UUID session
russtrotter··on Oculus accused of destroying evidence, Zuckerberg to testify in VR theft trial
I've always held Carmack in very high regard. He's one of the few folks in our field where if he says he didn't my gut tells me to believe him. Here's to justice being served, one way or another. There's a great comment from a user "Netherhigal" on the comments for the article that says: "If it were anyone else saying they rewrote the code from scratch, I'd call bullshit. With Carmack though? I'd believe he sneezed onto the keyboard and functioning code happened."

Pretty much sums up my opinion as well :)

russtrotter··on Czech climber Adam Ondra has conquered the Dawn Wall in record time
Ha! ture, i feel like the sport trifecta for developer types might be climbing, cycling (road and/or mtb) and ultimate frisbee :-) Am I out on a ledge here ? (pun intended)
russtrotter··on How the Casio F-91W became the world’s most versatile (and dangerous) watch
Yep, I agree with your argument. I can't see how this model Casio is any better than the equivalent Timex, Armitron, etc. Is the beeper signal approach you suggest viable?
russtrotter··on The Fall of Schwinn (1993)
A long but a fascinating read. I'm old enough to remember dreaming of owning a Schwinn 10-speed as a kid. The dream never materialized as by the time I had the means it was a whole new world. A plethora of options and bike types ruled the roost and I had completely forgotten about Schwinn as a brand. Perhaps the best TL;DR for the article is the line credited to the Specialized founder(s): "Innovate or die".
russtrotter··on Sorting algorithms visualizer
Ya good point. Radix sort is not a comparison-based sort so maybe it's in a different niche. I've always had a soft spot for it :)

russtrotter··on After ‘The Biggest Loser,’ Their Bodies Fought to Regain Weight
I get it: low-carb, hi-fat works for people and high-carb, low-fat works for people. Let's just get that off the table, but can we, for the love of the sustainable planet, have a hi-fat person give their testimony on how they did it with plant foods instead of just feeding the "mmmmmm more bacon, burgers, chicken and cheese!" mentality?
russtrotter··on John Carmack's BAFTA Introduction, Speech and Interview [video]
I'd encourage anyone in the twittersphere to follow @ID_AA_Carmack. His musings there waste few words and he often tosses questions out there that will get you thinking.

Congrats to him on the BAFTA, but yes, he really is just getting started. I hope to see the fruits of his current labors but I'm not sure if I'm cut out for the VR tech as I'll most likely just puke on my shoes :-(

russtrotter··on Ask HN: Implementing a graph database using Postgres tables for nodes and edges?
One technique you might look into is "Materialized Path":

* usually one single query to fetch an entire tree or subtree * more work on reconstructing tree from query result * requires prefix pattern matching operator, e.g. "like" from RDBMS

russtrotter··on V2 rockets on London and surrounding counties
Just visited DC area, USA and went to the Smithsonian Air and Space museum. That have a V2 on display there. It gives one a palpable impression of their power especially in WWII.
russtrotter··on How Zapier Went from Zero to 600k Users
+1 on Zapier! I'm a big fan of the service and platform. With YC news a more tech-focused crowd their web interface for building integrations is really effective. Point-n-click for most stuff, and you can fallback to JS should you need to get more creative.
russtrotter··on Bike Commuting to Work in Los Angeles
I enjoyed this article! The quote from the person who was upset about a car lane being replaced with a bike lane sadly expresses a common sentiment with the populous.

I'm a year-round commuter in Phoenix AZ USA. Gets really hot here for 4ish months. For the working commuter, finding a way you can grab a shower by the time you get to work can be the biggest hurdle!

Happy safe riding all you other nerds on 2 wheels!

russtrotter··on Thor – A Project to Hammer Out a Royalty Free Video Codec
Wasn't Ogg Theora created under just the same principles? I'm not smart enough in all things codec to know how it stacks up technically, but best I can tell, it's unencumbered.

russtrotter··on Jshell: The Java Shell (REPL)
I'd add my vote for using Groovy's shell (groovysh) for Java REPL. The shortcuts and conveniences the Groovy lang provides make it perfect for this kind of application.
russtrotter··on Google: 90% of our engineers use the software you wrote (Homebrew), but...
Is it possible that technical impression was not the sole reason somebody isn't hired?
russtrotter··on Aaron Swartz's Thoughts on djb (2009)
I can't your extent of sarcasm from the comment, but the final sentence made me cackle: "If I was a bug I wouldn't want to live in there"! ha!
russtrotter··on Meteor 0.9.3: Packaging updates and improvements
Hmm... just how much stuff in the JS universe is actually not 0.x.y?
russtrotter··on Compile like it's 1992
An Aug 2nd tweet from John Carmack started "Onboarding at Facebook went well...". My thought was "nobody onboards that guy?!?! he onboards YOU!!" I just hope talent like John Carmack can still spread their wings in that environment and do the things that got them to that point.
