russnes··on Wikipedia: WikiProject AI Cleanup
Inb4 wikipedia is lost to the same narrative control as MSM
russnes··on A decentralized peer-to-peer messaging application that operates over Bluetooth
Has Signal ever considered implementing any sort of peer to peer message propagation?
russnes··on Milk-V Titan: A $329 8-Core 64-bit RISC-V mini-ITX board with PCIe Gen4x16
What are the chances this will outperform ARM based computers in the next 15 years? Will we get Macbook airs with this in the fourties?
russnes··on A decentralized peer-to-peer messaging application that operates over Bluetooth
Why are these apps on bluetooth? I'm surprised no one has come up with a way to transmit data over local ad hoc wifi networks, it must surely be more simple if you could make some sort of transient hot spot
russnes··on EU Chat Control: Germany's position has been reverted to undecided
down with the EU
russnes··on EU Chat Control: Germany's position has been reverted to undecided
The EU is accelerating into a bureaucratic Rube Goldberg machine that does nothing except say the word Democracy out loud and tax their citizens
russnes··on EU Chat Control: Germany's position has been reverted to undecided
This insane push for surveillance and privacy infringements could be the catalyst needed for the next state exit from the EU
russnes··on WinBoat: Run Windows apps on Linux with seamless integration
The only thing I still can't run is League of Legends. I hope someone can figure that out somehow
russnes··on WinBoat: Run Windows apps on Linux with seamless integration
No just directly in Steam. You can just add a non steam game to your library and select the .exe file you want, and steam will create a c drive environment for each non steam game you add.

In some cases you might have to change which exe file it runs, if you initially run a setup.exe which creates the real exe file you'd want to launch inside the c drive environment folder

russnes··on FreeDroidWarn
Seeing as GrapheneOS appear to be recommended on the newest Pixel models, I wonder if it shouldn't be too difficult to get Arch Linux running on them with the AUR plasma-mobile?
russnes··on WinBoat: Run Windows apps on Linux with seamless integration
I've found that running non steam apps on steam with the proton experimental compatibility usually just works, it has become my go to solution
russnes··on FreeDroidWarn
Which one?

the majority of the population will happily put on the noose and they will join in on pressuring you to do it too. Don't kid yourself. However, a successful resistance movement only requires like 3% of the population or something
russnes··on The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect (1994)
one of my favorite books, great combination of philosophy and adventure. I especially like what reminds me of the vibe I would get from other sci fi and video games from America in the 90s. I also enjoyed his short story in the same universe "A Casino Odyssey in Cyberspace"
russnes··on LibreOffice downloads on the rise as users look to avoid subscription costs
I wish everyone would switch to LibreOffice so I can stop having to explain why their documents are formatted weirdly after I edit them
russnes··on Bybit loses $1.5B in hack but can cover loss, CEO confirms
Kim Jong 1337 hacker strikes again
russnes··on Updates to H-1B
this is what church is for
russnes··on AI hallucinations: Why LLMs make things up (and how to fix it)
so what you're saying is that LLMs are like middle aged men, just throwing things out there seeing if they'll stick?
russnes··on The Onion buys Infowars
The plot thickens...
russnes··on Improving Steam Client Stability on Linux
I love the steam client on linux these days, especially the compatibility for non-steam games is so great and Ive been using it to play WoW Classic while I have covid
russnes··on 'Operation Endgame' Hits Malware Delivery Platforms
It's antiquated because you would be romanticizing over an organization that has lost its integrity long ago
russnes··on Losing two jobs in one year
It sounds like you are deeply passionate about the art of software in general. I am the same way (and also had an MMORPG addiction lol). Now it turns out people really appreciate and will pay great sums for me performing my hobby for them, which is fantastic for me. For many other people I have met though, they get into software because they hear it's a good career move and provide job opportunities. For these people, I totally get that you can just walk away from software
russnes··on Linux Hits All-Time High of 3% of Desktop PC Share After 30 Years
unless you really need a very new version of a piece of software, the safest bet will always be the latest LTS version of Ubuntu. You could perhaps just upgrade your laptop OS with the software package GUI?

Fun fact: You don't really need to install any of the "flavors" of Ubuntu to get the various desktop environments (KDE, GNOME, Cinnamon, etc.), you can just install them as a package! (`apt install kde-full`). You can switch between them when logging in.

russnes··on How to be a consultant, a freelancer, or an independent contractor (2009)
this has been my experience so far, being 3 years into it
russnes··on Creating a sperm or egg from any cell?
This will be great until we select away our natural ability to reproduce, and then the power goes out and nobody can reproduce anymore and humanity goes extinct in one generation
russnes··on Twitter’s DM encryption is a modest security improvement over the status quo
I'd say one of the best features for private messaging is having disappearing messages. Then you lower your chances of leaking the messages to someone gaining illegitimate access right now, instead of leaking the database at any time in the future
russnes··on Indian government bans 14 messenger apps including Element, Briar and Threema
Last I checked Signal has reproducible builds at least on Android, so it should be possible to verify it doesn't have back doors.
russnes··on Is Nerd Culture Dying?
counter culture these days is returning to conservative traditions and monotheistic and other long lasting religions
russnes··on Stop Telling Everyone What You Do for a Living
What people do for a living takes up about half of their waking life (and they probably dream about it too), so it will tell you so much about the person. Personally I love my job and what I do, so I really want to talk about matters at least related to it because my life does revolve around it indeed. So establishing some common ground with the other person can really help to start the conversation.

But of course the conversation doesn't have to specifically be about either job through progression.

russnes··on FreeBSD 13.2
I would use FreeBSD myself if it weren't for Void Linux. You get all the extra tools and quality of life from Linux without any bloat, and it has a minimal init system.

It's also very convenient to use if you need up to date software since it is a rolling release, but there are some things in FreeBSD which is better like reproducible builds.

Kind of like Arch Linux but without the chaos, and the community appears to be growing!
