russelldjimmy··on Fable Took My Job
Let’s put aside the ad hominems and engage on the actual issue. You are free to disagree respectfully.
russelldjimmy··on iPhone Duo
Your opinion is duly noted.
russelldjimmy··on iPhone Duo
Not sure what expressing the cost of your current phone has to do with the discussion here, but I’m guessing this phone certainly isn’t for you. Some people choose to spend more on their phones, and some less.
russelldjimmy··on Bill Gates tries to install MovieMaker (2003)
Thanks for this reply. I learned something today!
russelldjimmy··on Being ambitious and being a dad
This was so heartwarming and relatable. Thank you for sharing!
russelldjimmy··on Being ambitious and being a dad
Indeed that seems like the next logical step
russelldjimmy··on Being ambitious and being a dad
This is very true :)

I used to think this way, and then I realised that I actually want to be famous and respected. After some time, I realised that I just wanted the approval of people. And finally I realised all I wanted was to feel loved and cared for.

russelldjimmy··on Being ambitious and being a dad
Agree with the sibling comment. As a new father, nothing - and I mean absolutely nothing - can describe the love, adoration and reverence that parents feel for their children. To be understood, it must be experienced. There is simply no other way.
russelldjimmy··on The Philippines' big offshoring industry is growing despite AI
Yes, fair point.
russelldjimmy··on The Philippines' big offshoring industry is growing despite AI
WLB is truly awful in India. People are stretched and stressed out at work, in addition to awful civic conditions which makes travelling to and from work a nightmare. I am not sure how long this can continue.
russelldjimmy··on Om Malik has died
I’m too young and too far away from the Valley to have ever met Om or been influenced by his early blogging work. However, I have avidly followed his blog ever since I came across it maybe 10 years ago. I love his writing. So crisp and honest, yet it had depth. His blog was one of the few I’d look forward to every day. I was waiting for him to return after he promised he’d do so in his last blog post. I certainly didn’t expect this. Om Shanti, Om. You will be missed.
russelldjimmy··on The founder of Craigslist has given away half a billion dollars
Ironically you’re the one splitting hairs here. It seems clear that your definition of “modest” differs from a few others’. That’s about it, there’s no deeper meaning here. It seems like you’re trying to find disagreement where there is none, and trying to convince others to use the word the way you are familiar with.
russelldjimmy··on Apple reveals new AI architecture built around Google Gemini models
You answered why one shouldn’t trust their view. But that was not the question. The question was, “why should one trust you?”
russelldjimmy··on Apple reveals new AI architecture built around Google Gemini models
And why would a reasonable person rely on your statement alone as fact?
russelldjimmy··on Ask HN: Why is the HN crowd so anti-AI?
The post asks a question and then presents a strong opinion with the confidence of it being a fact. There is a pretence of curiosity veiling a complaint. I think it is this perceived lack of curiosity, casual exaggeration (“10X faster”) and implication of the “one true way” (“Let’s face it”) among AI supporters that grinds my gears at least.

It is more of a reaction to misrepresentation and falsehood, which AI and its rhetoric seems to have generated a lot of.

russelldjimmy··on AI Doesn't Have ROI
Other commenters have made points similar to what I had in mind. The one thing I’d ask is this:

> AI really helps make that feedback loop 10X faster

Why be imprecise or exaggerate? Give the exact multiplier. Words mean something.

russelldjimmy··on GM just laid off IT workers to hire those with stronger AI skills
What are you even on about mate? Sure accountability doesn’t prevent all mistakes. Guess what, nothing prevents all mistakes. Accountability can help prevent some mistakes some of the time. It sounds like you’re suggesting getting rid of the concept of accountability because it doesn’t prevent ALL mistakes. Way to throw the baby out with the bath water.
russelldjimmy··on John Ternus to become Apple CEO
> It's a classical cases of Apple fans thinking Apple invented everything because they saw it first in an Apple product.

This is a classic case of thinking that inventing something before others is all that matters, while ignoring that finding a mass market use-case for an existing technology is also important.

russelldjimmy··on John Ternus to become Apple CEO
Instead of being curious why someone would make a choice you didn't, you chose to attack the choice! You might as well stick your fingers in your ears and go "na na na I can't hear you!" until you find a tribe of fellow haters.
russelldjimmy··on Thoughts and feelings around Claude Design
Correct, though I believe the parent comment covered that under the broad interpretation of “multiplayer”
russelldjimmy··on 90% of CEOs Say AI Changed Nothing. The Other 10% Have a PR Team
There are new technologies that don’t go anywhere and then there are new technologies that are useful. Built into your post is the assumption that AI is a new technology that is useful because of the comparison to innovative startups that have benefited from the early adoption of useful new technologies.

However, there are startups that have bet on the wrong technologies and perished, which is not addressed. This is survivorship bias. So if we’re going to have a serious discussion, we need to talk about both sides before anybody should get convinced about being bullish on it.

russelldjimmy··on Apple's accidental moat: How the "AI Loser" may end up winning
Go a little bit deeper than what the media directly wants you to think.
russelldjimmy··on Apple's accidental moat: How the "AI Loser" may end up winning
It’s WhatsApp. No one thinks about sending data to Meta. The world is much bigger than the HN bubble, where almost no one thinks about privacy implications.
russelldjimmy··on Apple's accidental moat: How the "AI Loser" may end up winning
No one uses iMessage in my country. Yet iPhones are sought after. Some of us just really like iPhones for the experience - not everything is a conspiracy. People can have different tastes and are more free to choose than people on HN like to believe.
russelldjimmy··on Stop Using Grey Text (2025)
Additions without any evidence:

> He just wants things to look cool and design-y

> some random photo

> That doesn't mean anything

This leads me to believe the author of this post doesn’t know what they’re talking about

russelldjimmy··on New iPad Air, powered by M4
I have an iPhone and an iPad Pro, and I use far less local storage on my iPad than I do on my phone. I know it sounds counter intuitive. I wouldn’t be surprised that this is the norm.
russelldjimmy··on Things I want to say to my boss
Thanks for the vulnerability and full marks for self awareness.

> I want to be liked too much, and in my emotional core, I'm frightened. I don't think I'm alone in this.

This makes at least the two of us. Of late, I’ve been observing how frightened my inner child becomes when it perceives not being liked. I’m straddling the line between the temptation to feel relieved by being liked and the survival-level fear when faced with disapproval. Breathe in, breathe out, breathe in, breathe out.

russelldjimmy··on Middlemen Are Eating the World (and That's Good, Actually)
If I happen to think of one, I will let you know for sure. Also, remember that on the internet, only those who have an issue with something will make a comment. There is always a vast silent majority of people who would say, “this is actually fine with me and I have no issues with it” if asked. It’s safe to say your title is not bad. There will always be someone for whom it doesn’t work and the internet has a selection bias to give only them a voice.

Edit: while writing my earlier comment, I didn’t realise that you were the author. I did not mean to say your title is clickbait. I was only trying to make a concession to anyone who thought so.

russelldjimmy··on Middlemen Are Eating the World (and That's Good, Actually)
I think many readers have a hard time letting go of whatever expectation the title created in their mind and then refocusing to try and understand the broader point. Not that I support clickbait titles or poor communication, but I do agree with you that it’s generally more helpful to let go of the semantic details as long as the broader point is understood. But many people choose to get hung up over the words (probably) because of an inability to self soothe the first shock.
