>Similarly, it's possibly a burden (albeit small) on your friends who have to text you in addition to organizing for others.

I really have to agree with this: using your friends as personal assistants is not cool. Planning events can be hard work, just scheduling your own weekend can be a hassle. That said: I do wish people used something other than Facebook to plan events. It's just not gonna happen anytime soon.

runj__··on Airbus A380, Once the Future of Aviation, May Cease Production
First class on an A380 is a better experience than a 787, if we're talking economy the economy upper deck on LH flights are truly a bliss to fly in: the first row is highly recommended.
runj__··on Show HN: Monthly subscription airline with SFO-LAX flights starting at $78
I didn't even realize there was anything below the fold as the black div looked like a footer :S, went straight to the FAQ.
runj__··on Sticker shock over Seattle's new sugary drink tax
Are there any other goods taxed after quantity rather than a sales tax? It seems complicated.

EDIT: Ah, cigarettes and alcohol (in the US) apparently:

I'd argue that's just how stews are. It's quite rare that they have an interesting mouthfeel or look particularly appetizing. I can understand making a stew out of tough beef but I'd rather rather spend money on a nice cut of meat or just eat chicken.

This is of course 100% subjective, sautéing is to me a much more interesting way to cook food (boiling things that needs to be boiled beforehand), I'll probably get cancer before the stew-heads though.

runj__··on Artwork Personalization at Netflix
>I just ignore any recommendations altogether and just browse all new arrivals every week...

I do the same only to find that there's nothing interesting there and watch Arrested Development again.

runj__··on We’re sorry, and we’re not rolling out the fees change
Yeah, they could have avoided this altogether by checking with their user base but this is a good response, although radio silence for five days is a bit crazy.
runj__··on Patreon’s new service fee spurs concern that creators will lose patrons
The really sad part is that they tricked people into potentially leaving their job and then ripped the carpet out from under them.

I'm really thinking of dropping pledges and simply mail them some cash but I'm afraid I'd skip the last step and hurt the creators I love in the end.

runj__··on Patreon’s new service fee spurs concern that creators will lose patrons
They could argue they're potentially paying a transaction fee when they're paying the creator if you're the only patreon. That's a silly argument though. I'd be happy to pay a single 2.9% of my total pledges + a single 35c fee.

This just kills $1 donations (and in my mind: anything up to $10)

runj__··on Turning a Furby into an Amazon Echo
It would be really cool if it modulated the Alexa voice to sound like a Furby too!
runj__··on Couple Proves Facebook Listens in on Conversations with Simple Experiment
If (it's not) it were true it wouldn't have to be sent in clear text or even at once though. There's tons of ways they theoretically could send data that wouldn't be obvious from looking at network traffic.
runj__··on Sweden's Job-Security Councils Make Layoffs Easier
Normally people are hired with a "provanställning" for the first three/six months, basically an at-will contract where you can fire the person for basically any reason (it's very pro-employer). In my experience you can tell if the person is going to be fired because of low performance in that time span. So "companies don't hire because it's hard to fire" doesn't really ring true for Sweden.

People (in tech) don't hang around the same company for too long either, even when someone who doesn't know anything gets a cozy job some company is going pay them better for another cozy job.

runj__··on Ask HN: What is your yearly passive income?
Not including anything from the company I co-founded: $10-$20 a month from publishing Hypersphere (a book written by the 4chan /lit/ board) which sells a few copies a month spread between Lulu and Amazon.

http://www.lulu.com/shop/anonymous/hypersphere/paperback/pro...

It was really fun self-publishing something and as an added bonus it's in the permanent collection of the MoMA Library.

runj__··on Pandora is laying off 7% of its US workforce
I remember emailing Pandora in what must have been 2008 realizing about the fact that I could not use the service from Sweden (I had been a foreign exchange student in high school in the US). I got a reply from Tim Westergren which felt huge.

I would not be as much into 80's synth pop without Pandora, that's for sure.

runj__··on To Slow Global Warming, We Need Nuclear Power (Op-Ed)
Space is one of the big ones for me, we need nuclear for space exploration, I'm fine with solar for earth as long as we keep nuclear science up.
runj__··on Why Spotify’s Discover Weekly is getting really boring?
Having talked with people that have close insight into Discover Weekly it actually only checks your last few thousand songs though (weighting them accordingly) and checks if those songs are on other peoples playlists, then choosing the songs on their playlists that are not on yours. This means that you have a pretty big pool of songs to start with (people with similar taste) that is getting smaller and smaller. The fact that those people also use discover weekly could lead to a bit of a feedback loop.

I found a friend who during a party came up and said "I listen to this song all the time, it's amazing!" and then the next and the next and the next song the same happened. We had been listening to the same (semi-obscure) music for the majority of the past year. It was only later that we discovered that we had both found the songs from discover weekly and were not at all as obscure and knowledgable about music, but hey: we had the same taste in music.

runj__··on Ask HN: What is your favorite internet rabbit hole?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pritzker_Architecture_Prize

It has links to architects and those pages in turn have links to beautiful buildings. Also the wikipedia pages of art museums tend to be awesome timesinks as well, you can click through every artist and all of their famous artworks.

runj__··on How I make $400 a month in Passive Income by Self-Publishing
I was the editor and publisher of this tome of a shitpost:

https://www.amazon.com/Hypersphere/dp/132978152X

http://www.lulu.com/shop/anonymous/hypersphere/paperback/pro...

The 4chan /lit/ board wrote Hypersphere as a collaborative writing project but someone needed to actually publish it, something I undertook as a project, I must have spent something like 20 hours editing it (plus way more helping to write it). It has so far sold 650 copies, most of which I sold with a profit of less than a dollar in profit per book since it didn't feel right selling it for a profit to the people that helped write it.

I've since bumped the price and I'm getting something like ~$2.5 a book, and it's currently selling 5-10 copies a month. The Amazon price is far higher than the Lulu one (which was the publishing platform of choice) since they obviously want a cut.

The biggest pro of the project was that it helped me understand how to self-publish: I've given my partner two physical poetry collections about her since: something that was pretty appreciated.

runj__··on Denmark is on its way to becoming an organic food country
Yes, they still have a pretty high PPI though. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(PPP)...

In Sweden we usually talk about marginal tax rates and how Denmark usually has got us beat on that front but it seems it's mostly their high VAT that makes that possible. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_tax_rates

runj__··on Div Turakhia has sold his seventh business, Media.net, for $900M
The puffiness of this is just ridiculous, I'm not sure what they're trying to say? I usually enjoy reading about wealth and wealthy people but this just felt... fake.

runj__··on Spending 15 bucks on a notebook is the best investment you can make right now
I've had a Moleskine notebook in my bag for the past 4 years, it was just this year I started using it almost every day. TODO:s, quick calculations, poems, the start of a novel. The feeling of pen to paper is difficult to compare to anything else.

I enjoy writing on a good keyboard as well but it really is two different kinds of writing. Finding a good pen was difficult since I am prone to losing things and didn't want to spend astronaut money on something I would just misplace. I'm using a Muji 0.5mm black gel pen right now which really suits my needs.

The way the ink flows out when you keep the pen to the paper for a bit, how it shows where you took a moment to think. How thin strokes shows how you wrote something in a hurry. Black boxes throughout where I decided on a different word or spelling. Pen and paper shows the work and tells more of the story.

runj__··on Why Rent Is So High and Pay So Low
If the viewport is small enough it seems scrolling is disabled. I usually browse the web on the right side of my 15" screen and was confused when I wasn't able to scroll.

I find it weird that most people don't plan for people with 900px or so wide browsers.
