runj__··on So You Want to Abolish Time Zones (2015)
I've don't recall ever having worked with people in Spain but certainly with people living in France and Germany. It really is just a number though at the end of the day. Living in Sweden I'd never take a meeting before 9AM unless forced to, especially during winter.

If you're in a position where you're scheduling meetings you hopefully have some idea of where the participants are located and try to select a time that works for the most amount of people have woken up or not yet fallen asleep.

This will probably become more of an issue with more people working remotely though.

I'm still a little bit sad we got fetch as part of javascript when the request module had such a great interface. I still prefer the look of it.

runj__··on SpaceX gets $886M from FCC to subsidize Starlink in 35 states
Isn't Starlink supposed to have the lowest ping of any solution out there (light not travelling in fiber but air/space) and be a breakthrough for financial customers? Bandwidth doesn't really matter _too_ much in those applications does it?

The testing done for the ISO standard seems to be based on irradiation(1). Seems fairly straight forward although I'm not sure it's tested for all kinds of radiation etc., but with a specific temperature and light it looks like very few other things would matter.

runj__··on Lidl to Launch Rival to AWS
In Sweden Lidl is know for being suspiciously cheap, they're even playing on it in their ads here. They had a marketing stunt where a chef started a luxury pop-up restaurant and the payoff was that it was all Lidl ingredients.

"You can cook good food EVEN though you're using Lidl stuff"

I'm not 100% sure that's what I want of a cloud provider.

runj__··on Manager's Playbook: Heuristics for effective management
I don't think I've ever left a 1:1 feeling like I didn't waste my time, both as a manager and team member. The structure of a 1-1 (as described by the playbook) forces you to see problems where there are none. They are forced and contrived.

A natural check-in every once in a while is much preferred in my book, I trust my team members to bring up actual problems as soon as they see them. A leading question forcing some reflection is fine but forced meetings for the sake of the meeting is wrong.

runj__··on Elon Musk’s plan to build one Starship a week and settle Mars
The momentum of civilisation is meandering and spread. The few humans burning their own path are straightforward and fateful, there seems to be more change happening once there's a single individual behind it, but perhaps only because more change in every direction seems less than the pure firethrodden path of the single individual.

I think we already are using another calendar system! Most used dates in existence are probably using Unix time, at least I know I only check the calendar a few times a day but I have systems running checking it multiple times per second.

The "Guinea Pig" angle is a marketing stunt. A pretty good one though.
runj__··on 600k concurrent websocket connections on AWS using Node.js (2015)
Do you think they got big because they use it or do they use it because they're big?

Pre-optimization is the root of all evil, my dude.

runj__··on 600k concurrent websocket connections on AWS using Node.js (2015)

runj__··on NBA's China dilemma: $4B at risk as Chinese TV cancels game broadcasts
You can say whatever you want, but they might not want to throw money at you if you start shit talking their regime and it's values. Is that not free speech?
runj__··on A brief history of government efforts to stop people from wearing masks
Yeah, it's not weird that the laws are coming now that the police (and by extension the government) have the technology to actually use our faces.

The protestors in Hong Kong really do have a reason to protect their identities from China, so do (peaceful) protestors from any state. Freedom of speech should be allowed for anonymous persons as well.

Buddhist seems pretty easy to categorize? If you see someone standing in front of a buddhist temple wearing an Kāṣāya (had to google the actual word: the orange robes) they're pretty likely to be a buddhist, right?
runj__··on Plastic Free July
While I appreciate the effort I find that plastic is an excellent way of reducing food waste which environmentally should have a larger impact than the packaging itself [1]. Glass bottles vs. plastic ones also seems like a fairly straight-forward issue, the energy required for transport and the fact that they sometimes break doesn't seem to be worth the perceived re-usability. Either way, an experiment like this seems to be a good way to find just how dependent we are on plastic/packaging rather than trying to be kind to the environment on a macro scale.

This is what emotes are for, no? Most of the comments in a traditional Forsen stream are emotes and I'd argue that they give you a pretty good idea of the atmosphere of the chat.

runj__··on Making a Fortune Telling Machine (2016)
Amazing execution! I love fortunes and the tarot data set linked looks amazing.
runj__··on Welcome to Shanghai, the capital of the future
Woah, what Beijing did you go to? Did you walk in the backstreets at all? A block outside of the forbidden palace and it the streets are filled with trash and unpainted cinder block one story buildings. Even around Wangfujing I'd consider it dirty and the further outside the center you go the worse it gets.

I may a Tokyo apologist but it is by far a cleaner city than Beijing, it's just busier.

runj__··on How Some Consultants Fake an 80-Hour Workweek (2015)
Musk spending time with his children could be seen as training future C*Os (I'm not saying this is what he claims to do). Someone reading an business magazine is business development. Someone reading up on video game development is educating themselves in the database query issue they're currently investigating at their workplace.
runj__··on How Some Consultants Fake an 80-Hour Workweek (2015)
Even just forwarding an email or direct messaging "hey, [edge case person who seems reliable in not bothering people in cases where it's not warranted] is having trouble with this service." is usually enough.

I get that time outside work belong to the employee but people who can be even the slightest bit flexible with that have an inherent extra value.

runj__··on How Some Consultants Fake an 80-Hour Workweek (2015)
I had a big fight with the other co-founders of a company regarding work hours a while back. Most programmers hit something like up to four "good" hours per workday, the biggest problem is capturing those hours while they're at work. A separate problem is hitting those hours while they have access to their manager or colleagues that can help them overcome small but time consuming problems.

I'd like to think that programmers have a creative or even artistic occupation (personally I'm more manager than programmer these days). Forcing something creative out is rarely good or even possible. The majority of the employees in my organization are in sales. There's a limit to where you can push that for most people too, but it is a different kind of limit.

Personally I've only put in proper 80-hour work weeks something like three times working as a disillusioned startup "employee" or as a consultant in extreme crunch because of launch marketing costs. Sure, something is deployed and it you certainly feel a sense of accomplishment but it's not something that should be used by any serious company expecting people to stay longer than a year or two.

With that said: people checking/answering their email or checking error logs at odd hours "for free" really do bring value to a company though.

runj__··on Taxify is entering the e-scooter game
It's not a scooter vs. car question, it's a scooter vs. public transportation question. Or scooter vs. bicycle. And while I am pro-scooter I really think the upsides of public transportation and a city being bicycle friendly are greater than a city having pay per minute-scooters.

runj__··on Lockheed Martin has obtained a patent for a compact fusion reactor
"right now" - Probably not. But with something like fusion for free energy would could just start pulling carbon from the atmosphere, we could start to transmute elements, it would be great for interstellar travel and energy would be the limiting factor of a global AI.
