rubyist5eva··on Crypto exchange AAX suspends withdrawals
And another one bites that dust. Hopefully this is a sign that the entire crypto craze is collapsing.
rubyist5eva··on Mold linker may switch to a source-available license
MIT code doesn’t even need to be relicensed, technically. So it can be left in as-is.
rubyist5eva··on A Replacement for Strong Parameters
I use a mix of both. GraphQL is used to validate the schema and types of the input, model validations are used to ensure that the actual values being saved to the database make sense from a domain perspective.
rubyist5eva··on A Replacement for Strong Parameters
recently had a new hire try to add dry-monad to our monolith and I had to explain to him that while I personally don’t mind it, having to explain monads and have other people that don’t necessarily understand monads maintain the code is not a good idea and that there are perfectly idiomatic Ruby constructs that any developper could maintain that can accomplish the same thing

He doesn’t work for us anymore (not because of this)

rubyist5eva··on A Replacement for Strong Parameters
This is the main reason why I use graphql on my Ruby web projects. The client flexibility is nice. Performance issues from wonky queries sent from clients can be a pain to debug - thankfully it’s an internal API so I can work directly with the client devs to create optimal queries. But the strong type guaranties and schema validation is the main reason why I prefer graphql over rails controllers with strong parameters.
rubyist5eva··on Is algae the new kale?
I didn't say it was a problem. OP was suggesting we make less people, and we already are.
rubyist5eva··on Is algae the new kale?
G7 countries are already all below replacement fertility rates.
rubyist5eva··on We should have Markdown-rendered websites
Screw that I want C++ rendered websites.
rubyist5eva··on GitHub Blocks – waiting list signup
I'm on chrome and the scrolling is messed up as well.
rubyist5eva··on It's not Ruby that's slow, it's your database
I would like some kind of middle ground, which is why lately I tend to lean toward using something like Sequel and mapping my own domain entities. Mixing domain entities with persistance has proven to me to be a colossally bad idea.

I'm in the process of writing a rather large new feature for our application that heavily uses aggregates and window functions, and writing queries that try to use these sql feature while also taking advantage of scope chaining is just an exercise in pure frustration.

I think the more I lean on "advanced" SQL features, the more I just think I've probably outgrown Rails personally because it doesn't easily enable the kind of solutions that I need.

rubyist5eva··on Meta lays off 11,000 people
> I got this wrong, and I take responsibility for that.

I wonder what this means in practice? Nothing? Ok, great.

rubyist5eva··on It's not Ruby that's slow, it's your database
I’m a Rails developer by trade, been doing it for over a decade. Bad indexing and lazy N+1 are 90% of the performance problems in a typical rails application. The other 10% is when people do aggregates or joins in application code instead of sql. I absolutely despise ActiveRecord because it makes non-trivial aggregates a pain to write. Sequel is a much better ORM but good luck getting a team on board.
rubyist5eva··on Twitter’s mass layoffs have begun
Saw a leaked video yesterday from a meeting that Elon wants to basically copy WeChat and become the "everything app" in America. He also laughed at the engineers when they told him that "edit is incredibly complex". Couple that with mass layoffs/restructuring. This saga is gonna be interesting to say the least.
rubyist5eva··on Snap Store administrators removed signal-desktop from Ubuntu Snap
boycott Signal actually, they are the ones that sent a silly takedown notice
rubyist5eva··on The pool of talented C++ developers is running dry
womp womp
rubyist5eva··on Playstation VR2
I have Subnautica on PC and love it, you're right it is very scary because of the way the world is setup and the type of threats you face. I recently moved and my HTC Vive is packed up and haven't had the motivation to hook up the sensors again, so I may hook it up to go back and try the VR mode now that you mention it.
rubyist5eva··on Playstation VR2
Well then I'm sold. Gonna look into it, thanks!
rubyist5eva··on The pool of talented C++ developers is running dry
I should brush up on my C++...how's the pay looking? Ruby pays very well, which is my current bread and butter.
rubyist5eva··on Playstation VR2
A friend of mine gave me a PSVR1 for my birthday (which I use on my PS5). I'm playing Resident Evil 7 in VR mode and it's the most immersive experience in any horror (or possibly any other genre, really) game I've ever played. I was legitimately terrified and didn't want to sleep the night I played it for the first time. I am not a person that gets easily scared in horror films or games and usually get a laugh out of the absurdity of gore and jump scares but RE7 just hit much different in VR. The dinner table scene at the beginning of the game, and the chase sequences were absolutely horrifying.

If Resident Evil 8 and/or the Resident Evil 4 remakes get VR modes I will buy PSVR2 on day one.

rubyist5eva··on Rakuten Mobile is replacing Red Hat as its Linux OS supplier
The numbered version of CentOS Stream is only "upstream" of the same numbered Enterprise Linux version. RHEL and CentOS 9 are both forked from Fedora 34, for example.
rubyist5eva··on How I survived a year in ‘the hole’ without losing my mind
This isn't prison, this is torture. Absolutely disgusting.
rubyist5eva··on AdGuard Home: Network-wide ads and trackers blocking DNS server
You’re right it’s not logical but you aren’t actually doing anything.
rubyist5eva··on Nobody wants touch-screen glove box latches
I don’t want touch screen anything that doesn’t also at least have a manual release. I will continue to buy junker cars and fixing them up. Thanks Dad for teaching me how to fix my own cars (and YouTube has filled in the gaps).
rubyist5eva··on AdGuard Home: Network-wide ads and trackers blocking DNS server
My rpi4 runs this in a container and it works great
rubyist5eva··on The Great People Shortage is coming – it's going to cause global economic chaos
These days it kinda feels like both to be honest.
rubyist5eva··on Factorio for Nintendo Switch is now available
Just rewrite your application in Factorio
rubyist5eva··on “Twitter will be forming a content moderation council with diverse viewpoints”
I got a permanent ban for quoting a video which contained "when do start killing white people" and said that this was bad. Banned for inciting violence, upheld on appeal and told it would not be looked at again. Twitter's current moderation policy is extremist ideological garbage.
rubyist5eva··on CD Projekt is remaking the first Witcher game in Unreal Engine 5
Recruitment is part of it as . It’s not possible to find people that haven’t worked at your company to have experience with your custom engine - but you can hire people with years of experience with Unreal already and ramp them up for your specific game quickly.
rubyist5eva··on UN says “No credible pathway” and “woefully inadequate” to stop global 1.5C
It was a ludicrous notion that it was possible to begin with.
rubyist5eva··on Meta stock price drops more than 20%
One can only hope there will be a great awakening of some kind and it will go to 0.
