rubing··on Math Academy, part 1: My eigenvector embarassment
eigenvectors were the only tough part of the linear algebra course i took, i think that's b/c it's quite a bit to learn before you start seeing the point of it. methods like PCA are rely heavily on eigendecompositon and allow you to reduce the dimensions of data...this is useful in all sorts of ways like compression for instance (e.g. getting rid of the dimensions that aren't very meaningful).
rubing··on Poll: What is your highest educational qualification?
accurate, but not specific
rubing··on Poll: What is your highest educational qualification?
Doctorate is not PhD, MD, or JD. please correct your poll
rubing··on Is swine flu panic caused primarily by people who are not egocentric?
i saw a news story the other night about a graduation ceremony at northeastern was prohibiting congratulatory handshakes b/c of fear of swine flu. This speaks to the cowardliness learned men and women. They are the most sniveling cowardly and pathetic people on this planet. The students at the ceremony should have all held hands and mocked the professors/administrator. What buffoons!
rubing··on Is swine flu panic caused primarily by people who are not egocentric?
caused by a bunch of beauracrat ninnies with nothing better to do looking to justify their existence as well as news people scavenging for the next story
rubing··on Academia vs. Industry: The Difference Is in the Punctuation Marks
so i guess he's saying academics are a lot more annoying and a lot less productive??
rubing··on How To Encourage Women in Linux
Women already get enough special treatment. If you register for a computer forum with a female avatar, the amount of attention you get and rapidity with which your questions get answered is inordinate.
rubing··on Ask HN: How do you find work?
Start offering free weekly classes on programming at your local starbucks. Make it something real general like homepages for small business. Or facebook profiles, crap like that. Then if somebody wants more substantial private help or consultation you can charge them for it.
rubing··on TED: Bill Gates released mosquitos into audience while taking about malaria
Hasn't this guy released enough bugs into the world?!
rubing··on Ask HN: Hiring a Freelance Hacker/Finding a Co-Founder
You should just open a McDonalds, they're gonna do great in the coming depression.
rubing··on The Rage of a Freelancer on Craigslist
6 years ago I was at a crossroads in my life...wondering if I should pursue a career in IT. Ultimately, I decided not to, since I realized that anybody anywhere in the world could learn all the programing and development skills needed to be an IT professional. Instead, I went into the health sciences and now have a shot at a decent career. I still love tech and am trying to find the time to learn LISP, hopefully I can leverage that into a new practical application in my field. I completely empathize with the frustration the author of this craigslist posting has. Unfortunately, there are so many poor and intelligent people around the world who are willing to work their butts off for relatively little. US citizens who work in tech would be helped out if the government stopped renewing H1-B Visas. It is not fair to the tech workers here to compete with third world labor. And it is not fair to developing nations who lose their biggest talents.
rubing··on Fidel Castro's Blog
Who wants to hear that old fool blathering...thank god I don't live in Cuba. Fidel blathering away 24/7 b/c he has so much wisdom for you to learn. Fucking narcissitic self-indulgent ego-maniacal idiot.

rubing··on Who's working on Obama's promise of electronic medical records in 5 years?
I was asking this at my doctors office yesterday. I'm sure the arcane situation is due to the required confidentiality needed with patient data. Average people (secretaries, receptionist) can not be trusted to keep digital data secure, given the cleverness of social engineering. Moreover, public perception of data insecurity is well established. So, you would need a very secure system and to convince the public.
rubing··on Ask HN: PhD, Startup, or Career?
startup would be best, but most risky. job will be good if they let you innovate and reward you for it. phd is good if you like to be tortured.
rubing··on Ask HN: What is your favorite TED talk?
what some people won't say/do in order to get government funding...what a load of crap!
rubing··on Ask HN: Afraid I've dug myself into a hole
