Physics, system design, lab automation, magnetic microfluidics, cell culture, genomics. These are a few of my favorite things.

rubidium··on Delphi 11 Community Edition
This. It’s a great little system for such use cases. It is mainly falling out of favor for new development because it’s hard to find devs. But in terms of quickly getting automation equipment designed and running it’s a workhorse.
rubidium··on Ask HN: Should I get a stand-up desk?
And the advantage is after covid there are a good number available 2nd hand (craigslist, fb) as some people return to the office and don't want it in their home anymore.
rubidium··on Why I Traded My Smartphone for an Ax
I’ve adopted a concept in the article of a “sabbath” from my smartphone. It stays plugged into its charger one day a week. I’ve found it to be quite refreshing.
rubidium··on [dead]
Came to say just this. The linked article and the paper rest of the same false assumptions that Malthus made.

rubidium··on Cruise told by CA DMV to reduce robotaxi fleet 50% following crash
Coming from a major metro area in the Midwest, on my recent visit to San Fran you could get to MANY more useful things in a 15 min walk. Because of its density, I don’t think San Fran has a real transportation problem to speak of (for those who live in the city proper). For those who live outside of it, sure. But that’s just par for the course rush hour issues at any major metro.
rubidium··on Pines’ demon observed as a 3D acoustic plasmon in Sr2RuO4
I have a PhD in Physics and got a little lost in the abstract myself, so don’t feel bad! It’s very dense sentences with pretty technical jargon. After a few re-reads and spot checking some forgotten condensed matter terms of art it made (some) sense.
rubidium··on With LLMs, enterprise data is different
One of the striking things about working in big enterprise is the number of policies , rules, guidelines especially in industries governed by industry regulators (eg ISO, FDA). Those with proper knowledge of the arcane bureaucratic systems can navigate it (with effort!). Those without get bogged down quickly. Current LLMs could be good at populating the document filler required in this area.

A properly trained “oracle” could be a big leg up to new hires at companies and new entrants to such industries.

rubidium··on LK-99 isn’t a superconductor
Best as we can tell, it wasn’t a hoax. It was a poorly understood experiment (and perhaps premature arxiv preprint). It’s very similar to the “faster than speed of light” puzzle from a few years back. It doesn’t harm scientific integrity. It reveals that science is by nature an exploratory process where what we know today is subject to change in light of new data and theory.

As a PhD physics scientist with a familiarity with this area, I’m glad this got the attention it did and showed science working “as it should”.

rubidium··on Don’t Forget Intuition: The art of doing science
Yeah but you know plenty of how science gets done if you go do science. The goal of a scientific paper is to concisely convey what novel thing has been discovered. It is not to convey how science gets done.

PhD thesis are sometimes good places to look if you want more of the gory details.

Edit: and if you ever take a physics lab in trying to measure the heat capacity of water or speed of light you learn a bunch about how science actually works.

rubidium··on How to Stare at Your Phone Without Losing Your Soul
Mindless things like sitting on the porch, idly staring at the wall, or people watching sure. This is the fallow time that enables future growth.

Idly dopamine dripping on internet is like spraying salt on your fields. Nothings going to grow.

rubidium··on Scar tissues make relationships wear out (2013)
“my very long term relationships”?! i think you and I have a different conception of what long term is…

Long term is like 30 years, not 5.

What makes real long term relationships work isn’t common interests. It’s commitment.

rubidium··on Peloton CEO quit after laying off 2,800. A lesson about how not to lead (2022)
Bluntly, this sounds exactly like a "as seen on tv" testimonial. No one denies the product was compelling / successful. It's just that fitness products are an incredibly fad-ish market. Something else will come along and be the new bright shiny thing.
rubidium··on Ex-Apple VP Mike Abbott Joins General Motors as Exec Vice President, Software
After just moving from a 2009 to a 2023 vehicle (both Ford), I agree. I’m overall happy with the tech improvements, despite the occasional bond-headed software implementation.

I say this as someone who used to be a “stick-driving don’t put a computer if it’s not required” card carrying member. Maybe I’m just getting soft.

rubidium··on The Coming of Local LLMs
Is there a "getting started" guide you'd recommend to a newbie to the space?

Discord is groups > channels > messages but doesn’t use threads (I believe).

MS Teams is groups > channels > threads > messages

But yea this does feel like forum arrangement. Which is really the most useful format for longer term conversations. Discord is great for “today and tomorrow matters yesterday doesn’t (yolo).

rubidium··on Fireball Spotted over Northeastern USA
I saw a bright green huge one in Portland, Oregon USA in the 2004-2006 time period. Only tool I had was my eyes and brain to recall it (and I can still recall it well).

I told a few people about it and moved on. I’m guessing that’s the most common response.

rubidium··on Joint statement by the Department of the Treasury, Federal Reserve, and FDIC
I just gotta say, banking has changed a ton since 1870. Then banks going bust was normal. Now everyone freaks out. It must be nice having a banking system where “bank loses my money” is not the major systemic risk.
rubidium··on Mistakes I made as an engineer, but had to become a manager to see
Yea, it’s from a pretty green manager it seems. Not great advice to engineers.
rubidium··on Ask HN: How do you get companies to talk to you about their problems?
Well connected people that VPs in pharma listen to. It’s not an impenetrable network but it’s based on history of working together.

You find one willing to vouch for you and it will at least open doors. I’m not so confident there are king makers so much as “adds a rook to your team-makers” :)

rubidium··on Honestly, It's Probably the Phones
Given your comment, may I so boldly suggest you probably would be happier without your phone.
rubidium··on Honestly, It's Probably the Phones
It’s your job. You don’t “push” your kids. You instruct them, set expectations, and enforce the expected behavior.

General advice for kids and phones:

- no phones before 12 yr old

- shared phones between 12-16 (with other siblings or the “house” cell phone that also can be used by parents)

- own phone once 16 to acclimate them to healthy use while under your roof.

- a phone box for everyone in the household that gets used between 6-10pm every day (eg phone lives in the box, can still be checked if rings but then goes back in box not pocket)

- punishments that involve loss of phone privileges. This should follow the “x7 rule” where the punishment is much more severe than the disobedience (eg don’t listen to parent, 3 days without phone)

- model good behavior yourself. No phone out when your kids are around.

Highly recommend you study history a bit more. If you truly think religion only “sticks” in the presence of coercion… well there’s a lot of history that would be hard to understand.
rubidium··on A Lost Hiker’s SOS Signal Sparked a Wildfire. Now He Must Pay $300k
“Makes it seem punitive” um… are you concerned about that? It’s the whole point to be punitive. And there are supposed to be life altering consequences for actions we take.

Certainly there are problems with corporations not bearing the costs of the problems / issues they create. But that means we need better laws to capture that, not that this guy was unjustly punished.

rubidium··on A Lost Hiker’s SOS Signal Sparked a Wildfire. Now He Must Pay $300k
He lived. And learned a $300k lesson about being prepared so you don’t mess up the world. Seems like the justice system working.
rubidium··on Gitlab’s Startup Acquisition Process
They’re roles (intentionally flexible in the who) ascribed for the particular acquisition target. In M&A you have 2 main stages, the (1) find interesting targets and confirm they’re interesting, and (2) the purchase and integration.

The champion will often lead (1) but if they’re too busy may have a defined stage leader to make sure the trains keep moving well. In the later stage of (2) the stage leader will typically be someone with experience integrating companies. It’s an art.

I wouldn’t say they’re agreed on definitions, but I got what they meant from my exposure to M&A.

rubidium··on Text Is All You Need
This. If you’re concerned about text based persons, you’ve already lost touch with reality and too embedded in the web.

The article confuses personality (that which is experienced by others) with personhood (that which is) and falls apart from there.

rubidium··on Sweet Home 3D is a free interior design application
Sweet home 3-D is free. Does everything that you’re paying for and will still be around in 10 years.
rubidium··on Sweet Home 3D is a free interior design application
Used it for a full house renovation of a 125 year old house (merging a duplex to a single family and moving stairwalls). Was super valuable and used the drawings to get my plan approved by the city. The 3d view really helped in visualizing what the new spaces would feel like.

A bit of a learning curve but the flexible ability to import 3d models really helped. Now that i have every room in my house I can quickly test new furniture layouts.

Highly recommend it.
