rsmckinney··on Ask HN: Are compiler engineers still in demand, and what do they work on?
Meh. No doubt there are snobs in the field, but in my experience most of the grit and innovation tends to come from solid engineers without a language/compiler focus, let alone the phd.
rsmckinney··on Why Japan is so successful at returning lost property
It’s more to do with the purity of their culture resulting from low immigration which fosters a high level of mutual trust. Invariably immigration corrupts the hosting nation’s culture with trust absorbing the initial impact.

And it was accomplished in 1969 — engineering with a slide rule. I wonder what was different with American culture 60 years ago that enabled such an achievement?
rsmckinney··on Four-hundred Thirty-Five Representatives Can Not Represent 300M Americans
In essence you are saying “low information” votes are harmful and should be discounted. Would you agree the vast majority of potential voters targeted with “get out the vote” campaigns are “low information”?

Sage advice from an obvious veteran in the field.

10 years of coding in trade for 10 years of middle management... why would I follow your coding advice? A serious question.

rsmckinney··on Life Is a Ponzi Scheme (2009)
Retirement itself is a 20th century concept that requires a ponzi scheme to work. Unfortunately the family unit that used to support its elderly members unable to support themselves no longer exists in America. Instead we have nursing homes which amount to concentration camps for our elderly. But that’s okay, most of us are good nazis and deny that reality in trade for an uninterrupted screen viewing experience.
rsmckinney··on Trillion-dollar coin
$100 is the largest federal reserve note today. And even that is under pressure, mostly from the anti physical currency crowd.

Considering inflation a $100 note today is comparable to a $10 note from just a few decades ago. Thus currency denomination should shift in the opposite direction eliminating the cent and nickel, and adding larger notes.

> Electriticity infrastructure was built to provide electricity to privileged few

What group of people built the "electricity infrastructure" you now enjoy? And if they hadn't built it, do you think you would have access to dependable electricity right now?

rsmckinney··on Show HN: Type-safe metaprogramming for Java (and other killer lang features)
Think code generators are the only way to type-safely connect your Java code to JSON, XML, SQL, Javascript, etc.? Think again. Manifold offers a radical new way to connect Java to structured data.

IntelliJ IDEA provides comprehensive support for Manifold via the Manifold Plugin. Connect directly to your data without wedging an expensive code gen step in your build. Make incremental changes to files and type-safely access the changes instantly. Plus usage searching, deterministic refactoring, navigation, template editing, hotswap debugging, etc.

Manifold is both an API to build powerful metaprogramming features AND a set of awesome prebuilt features such as: - JSON Schema support - Extension methods (like C# a Kotlin) - Template files, 100% Java scripted - Structural Typing (like TypeScript and Go) - more

Manifold is just a JAR file you can drop into your existing project – you can begin using it incrementally without having to rewrite classes or conform to a new way of doing things.

Give it a go: http://manifold.systems/

rsmckinney··on Peter Thiel’s Embrace of Trump Has Silicon Valley Squirming
Anothet characteristic of the liberal mind: it cannot be endeared to an alternate point of view.
rsmckinney··on Peter Thiel’s Embrace of Trump Has Silicon Valley Squirming
That's a good Nazi.
rsmckinney··on Peter Thiel’s Embrace of Trump Has Silicon Valley Squirming
Sorry, you are confusing nationalism with racism. For example, there is nothing racist about border security (the wall). In fact without significant border security, a nation ceases to exist.
rsmckinney··on Peter Thiel’s Embrace of Trump Has Silicon Valley Squirming
Wait. What does the relevance of a new idea have to do with the ethnic composition of the people with the idea? Isn't that a racist statement? Fascinating.

My favorite part about the liberal mind are its obvious contradictions and, thus, the unintended consequences of its thought process.

rsmckinney··on Java Generics Are Turing Complete
You mean aside from it providing better and easier generics support? I personally like Kotlin, but I think Gosu has some advantages that should not be overlooked e.g,. Generics support.
rsmckinney··on Java Generics Are Turing Complete
Take a look at Gosu. It provides:

  - Reification
  - Declaration-site generics
  - Default covariance when variance not specified
  - Variance inference!
In practice default covariance is usually the most suitable; it's the pragmatic approach. But you can make a generic type super sound, if that's what you need. And with variance inference your generic type can safely inherit from generic Java types.

rsmckinney··on Stocks Off Sharply as Market Upheaval Grows
For now... QE 4 is coming, there is no doubt. It's the only tool in the chest. This time around though it won't be parked directly in the banks, but more likely it will be helicoptered directly to consumers, probably in the form of tax breaks, directly or indirectly. QE 4 will happen, but it still won't work of course because the economy sucks and people won't spend it, it will find its way back into the banks after all.
rsmckinney··on Stocks Off Sharply as Market Upheaval Grows
This is my favorite part. This is how most keynesians react when confronted with the harsh realities of QE. This and "the consumers just aren't spending enough." Ofc it's never enough QE and never enough spending. Meanwhile that creaking sound....

rsmckinney··on Stocks Off Sharply as Market Upheaval Grows
On earth, a zero interest rate indicates a sick or at least stalled economy. The rate cannot be held at zero for much longer without risking a deeper debt via evermore unhealthy credit expansion, yet the consequences of raising it, even a little, will likely crush global markets as investors react etc. There is no question this economy is quite sick and has been breathing with aid of the Fed's iron lung so long that it probably can no longer sustain itself without resetting (hard).
rsmckinney··on Stocks Off Sharply as Market Upheaval Grows
"Historically speaking"

Historically speaking, when has the Fed kept interest rates at ZERO for 7 years? After pumping QE full throttle at $80B/mo? The economy has been in continuous "recovery" mode since '08, but not much has actually recovered. The market is going to collapse my friend because, historically speaking, we are in dark, uncharted territory and have lost our way back.
