'set -o nounset' is a must have. I Just suffered this script from Samsung Printer setting Utility. sudo ./uninstall wiped the /opt

  DEST_PATH=/opt/$VENDOR/$DEST_DIRNAME
  #remove destination
  VERSION=`cat "$DEST_PATH/bin/.version"`
  if rm -fr "$DEST_PATH"; then
echo "INFO: $APP_NAME (ver.$VERSION) has been uninstalled successfully."

rshm··on Heartbleed disclosure timeline: who knew what and when
I wonder instead of notifying to select few parties with an embargo, if it would have been a better handled by releasing an encrypted sources with documentation containing the url to high availability server containing keys that serves only after pre-defined point in time. And documentation on integrity verification, accessment of the source changes and implications on other softwares using openssl.

I think the cause here is google following the injected urls from third party sites.
rshm··on Twitter’s Lack of Patents Seen as a Risk to Investors
Innovations that might cover their ad avenues all falls as a business processes. Patents on those i think are hard to get.
rshm··on Rewriting a large production system in Go
I was hung up on error as return instead of exceptions but came in terms eventually. Now i think, compared to exceptions the error handeling is better off with go's approach. They are local, and require more concious effort. Specially while coding for the critical systems this helps as you are not passing the buck to some other section of the code.
rshm··on Never Trust Facebook
Similar,

I deleted my twitter profile picture as well as account in 2008. I had a url of the profile image saved. After five years the the link works and image is still there.

rshm··on Petition to Repeal the DMCA
I would like to see the registered agent registration with the fees go away. And replaced with the free and online 'registration of the point of contact' approach.
rshm··on Triumphant motel owner slams Carmen Ortiz
"Caswell estimates the U.S. government will have to pay at least $600,000 toward his defense fees.". What a waste of taxpayer's money.
rshm··on Google Effect

interesting to see .us domain name, given online betting is illegal in us.
rshm··on SimpleCart(js) - Javascript Shopping Cart
Actual transaction happens in Paypal's page. Not for a complete e-commerce site, but for simple usages with few products i beleive this is a good solution.

rshm··on AdTrap removes ads between your modem and router
I think, new user would offset for the cost of updating the ad-block rules. I dont think, any could make a perfect adblocker. A good enough blocker would cover 90% of the market anyway.
rshm··on Google Donates $20,000 to Eclipse Foundation
20K is too less coming from Google. They have thousands of developers benefiting from the ide and Android + Google tools use eclipse as well.
rshm··on Introducing Tent - the decentralized social web
Instead of sub domain, email address would have been a better choice.

user@provider.tld

Where provider.tld provides specification/api.. like robot.txt/tent.json that would specify actual api endpoints for given user.

rshm··on We Need a Social Web OS
We are all so eager for adoption before the implementation. Big things on internet were not made wide adoption guaranteed. as @dglassan said, "Refactoring the internet is not the solution". Create something, invite small group, dev friends to take part. Either it is an api, platform or an application. If it is any good, it will get picked up for the wide adoption.

rshm··on The inconsistencies in your site's color palette

rshm··on Samsung reveals its pre-iPhone concepts: 10 touchscreen devices
I think you only have to prove the prior existence. It does not provide patent like protection but relieves you from the patent restrictions.
rshm··on Intel OS X binary of latest multiplatform malware discovered
Java's signed applet based security model is flawed.

You can not expect a non-tech savvy user to have a knowledge for certificate signing. The barrier between the local system and a rouge code is just a click between two buttons (accept or cancel).

rshm··on What Was Your First Coding Book?

Finished this book twice before coding a single line of java.

rshm··on The Silencing of Maya
Temporary solution would be to ask developers to port it to android or jail-break app and release from the country that does not honor these patents.

Since the app is a basic necessity for its user, customers wont mind going extra mile and root their device and use the app.
