New Zealand keeps fairly good records which can be downloaded here: http://www.transport.govt.nz/assets/Uploads/Research/Documen... page 62 lists the percentage of crashes, crashes with injuries and crashes with fatalities. Speed is constantly found in around 30% of fatal crashes.
rrreese··on Anki – Powerful, intelligent flashcards
I've been using Anki to learn German, specifically getting a handle on the gender of nouns. Its been remarkably successful, since the data is essentially random, I can't imagine how I would remember it without using this tool.

I've also got a maths and a stats deck where I've been adding formulas (it supports Latex) as I progress in a couple of courses I've been taking. If you are studying at University, School, doing a MOOC or learning a language Anki is an incredible tool.

The main problem is that you really need to be using it most days. If you fall behind your backlog builds up and its use as a tool becomes much less useful. I commute on the tube most days so that hasn't been much of an issue for me, but when on holiday, traveling etc its easy to fall behind.

rrreese··on Introducing OneNote for Mac
I used Evernote fairly extensively a couple of years ago. It had a long way to go back then.

In OneNote if you want a table you can type something and hit tab. What you wrote will be in a cell, and you will be inserting in the next cell. Tab again for another cell. Cells created like this merge if placed together. Tables in general are leagues ahead in OneNote.

One note also acts like a note book. you can write anywhere on the page. Evernote acts like a traditional text application. There is a single text area. It's difficult to explain without demonstrating, but it feels more natural.

The hierarchical nature of Pages, Sections and Section Groups works better for me then Evernote.

Shared notebooks with live update are really awesome in OneNote as well.

Finally I had more merge conflicts with Evernote, and lost data, but yymv.

rrreese··on South Korea bans unremovable mobile bloatware
Perhaps you don't own an iPhone? Theres a bunch of unremovable crap on mine. A comically bad notes app that loses notes, a poorly implemented reminders app, weather app (branded with a asmall yahoo add), Games Center which I can only assume was made by people who actively hate games, and a stock market app also festooned with yahoo adds.

That's ignoring the disaster that is the unreplaceable browser and mail app.

rrreese··on Silicon Valley workers may pursue collusion case as group
Lets consult the Oxford English Dictionary: http://www.oed.com/view/Entry/109061?redirectedFrom=literall...

"c. colloq. Used to indicate that some (freq. conventional) metaphorical or hyperbolical expression is to be taken in the strongest admissible sense: ‘virtually, as good as’; (also) ‘completely, utterly, absolutely’. Now one of the most common uses, although often considered irregular in standard English since it reverses the original sense of literally (‘not figuratively or metaphorically’)."

Of note the use by Twain: "1876 ‘M. Twain’ Adventures Tom Sawyer ii. 20 And when the middle of the afternoon came, from being a poor poverty-stricken boy in the morning, Tom was literally rolling in wealth."

You may not like this situation but it is way too late to complain about it.

rrreese··on Jeremy Hammond sentenced to 10 years for Stratfor leak
Completely. The Nazis were obviously Fascist, apologies for the poor wording.
rrreese··on Jeremy Hammond sentenced to 10 years for Stratfor leak
I'm not sure what you mean? The Nazi party was a fascist organisation...among other things. Mussolini's party was fascist as well. I dont think it was possible to be a Nazi supporter and not a proponent of a Fascist agenda in the 1930's/40's but todays Nazi apologists are often primarily interested in the Nazi's racist and antisematic agenda. For many people Nazi apologism is strongly and perhaps primarily linked with Holocaust denial.

The word Fascism may today primarily conjure images of Hitler and the Third Reich, but in the thirties it was strongly tied with Italy as well.

rrreese··on Jeremy Hammond sentenced to 10 years for Stratfor leak
Fascism is a term that is bandied about without much thought these days. Its well worth reading the overview on the wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fascism

Many Nazi beliefs aren't strictly fascist, comparing with the Italian Fascist Party may provide some insight. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Fascist_Party It's easy to conflate the two, and while fascism and Nazism are cleary undesirable they are not the same.

Nazi apologists may for example concentrate on Holocaust denial, while having little time for an authoritarian nationalised state.

I use OneNote extensively, on multiple devices, on a daily basis. I have never used pen input. I know many OneNote users. None use pen input.
rrreese··on GNU APL 1.0
>GNU APL is made up of about 50,000 lines of C++ code

A GNU project in C++, isn't this unusual?

EDIT: Today the GNU Coding standards says [1]:

"When you want to use a language that gets compiled and runs at high speed, the best language to use is C. C++ is ok too, but please don’t make heavy use of templates. So is Java, if you compile it."

Using the WayBack Machine to 2004 [2]:

"When you want to use a language that gets compiled and runs at high speed, the best language to use is C. Using another language is like using a non-standard feature: it will cause trouble for users. Even if GCC supports the other language, users may find it inconvenient to have to install the compiler for that other language in order to build your program. For example, if you write your program in C++, people will have to install the GNU C++ compiler in order to compile your program.

C has one other advantage over C++ and other compiled languages: more people know C, so more people will find it easy to read and modify the program if it is written in C.

So in general it is much better to use C, rather than the comparable alternatives."

>>Apple was not paid by a third party to include it's own software features.

I'll point you to the Apple weather app with the prominent Yahoo! link at the bottom left. This would be more tolerable if the app itself wasn't terrible. I really wish I could delete Apple's apps, why not come with them installed and let you remove and re-add, say like podcasts.

Why abuse the language? Almost every thing that is free is paid by some one else. Free means free to the person receiving the good/service. I appreciate English may not be your first language, but if you want to point out the costs, there are better ways then redefining the word free.
rrreese··on Samsung overtakes Apple as world's most profitable mobile phone maker
The iPhone 4 unlocked costs £319 in the Uk, or around $490 USD. To claim that this is an "ultra-discount device" is preposterous. I'm sure you can get it free with an expensive contract, but the costs remains decidedly non-cheap. To put that in perspective a quick google shows an £80 no contract Android phone. I'm sure its terrible, but that is an "ultra discount device".

You can also set a proper password on the iPhone (and presumably Android). You should probably have one of these safeguards set up if your phone has unfettered access to your email, social networks, contacts etc.

rrreese··on Turbulenz HTML5 game engine is now open source
Like you I'm a gamer, and like you this doesn't appeal.

However I can see exactly why people are doing this. There have been a big explosion of indie games recently and that can be put down to iOS and Steam. Both make it super easy to get games.

Anything that reduces friction is going to be very appealing to game makers. And installing Steam is friction. If playing your game simply involves visiting a link - thats pretty easy. As HTML5 matures, as more people use modern browsers, and as Flash becomes less reliably installed on browsers, expect to see a lot of casual games moving to HTML5.

This and your other comment make me really sad. For everything that is posted here on Hacker News, there will be many people who are familiar with it, who have domain knowledge. In a child comment you refer to this as "a game physics 'Hello World'."

People who aren't familiar with this sort of thing find it really cool, hence the impressive number of upvotes. These online demos are accessible in the way some exe just isn't.

So condescending, dismissive, and of course the top voted comment :/

rrreese··on If I Made Another Monkey Island...
Using existing IP is a lot safer, and will generate more sales, even if otherwise the games are the same. There are a lot of people who played Monkey island in their youth and are nostalgic for it, but who don't follow the latest game news and wouldn't auto buy a game without the IP. Yes it could be successful, but that the Monkey Island name it would be more so.

See for example the success of every new Civ game compared to the success of other strategy games.
