rrose··on Launch HN: Charge Running (YC W21) – Social running app with real-time coaching
most gyms won't have coaching geared towards distance runners, though. Competitive distance runners are specialized enough that most fitness classes won't really give them what they're looking for.

If you're somebody who goes for a couple runs a week to supplement their main forms of exercise I agree that this is a pretty steep price to pay.

rrose··on Edit: A text-editor mixing vi and Acme
I used to use multiple cursors in sublime before i switched to vim, and 99% of the time the thing i wanted to accomplish with multiple cursors could be done easily with :s/pattern/replacement/ or some variant of that.

Then I switched to neovim and got :set inccommand, which visually shows you the replacement as you type it, which feels like it accomplishes what multiple cursors/multiple selections is trying for

rrose··on Sir Kazuo Ishiguro warns of young authors self-censoring out of 'fear'
the first two articles are people who are being given a platform to complain about cancel culture. If the premise of the complaints about cancel culture is that anything outside of the "mainstream" woke consensus is silenced, these are proof that that is not happening.

The last article is not mainstream at all. Gun ownership as a means of pushing a leftist agenda is extremely different from the somewhat mainstream, right-leaning ideas about gun ownership

- retarded is a slur, people with special needs don't want to be called that. not sure why this is controversial

- this is just normal language change. we use different words than we did in the 50s.

- queer and gay are both still used, and in fact are both part of LGBTQ, so this doesn't actually fit the pattern youre trying to show.

- native american is just a better term? indian is confusing given that there is also a country called "india"

- can a person be "illegal"? undocumented worker is just a more correct term.

- this and the undocumented worker one are probably the only ones in here that actually fit the pattern youre trying to show.

- people ask not to be called he/she and we oblige. I don't see how this is similar to newspeak.

- bum is clearly a pejorative term, and because many of us don't dislike homeless people a priori, we don't use this term.

there's nothing sinister going on here. It's crazy to me that people are really clutching their pearls over not being able to call people "retards" and "negroes"

depending on if you consider george will "mainstream"- he is an establishment conservative which certainly is a dissenting viewpoint at the washington post: https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/unprecedented-untarg...

not a newspaper, but a national magazine a front page article with a definitively non-mainstream message: https://harpers.org/archive/2020/04/good-guys-with-guns-soci...

rrose··on Ask HN: Anyone else burnt out due to extended lockdown and work-from-home?
what do you mean by "american-style coffee"? as an american, coffee to me means drip coffee, which is more "diluted" i suppose but is certainly not more processed or "mixed" than espresso. most american coffee is not sweet starbucks drinks.
rrose··on Parler drops offline after Amazon pulls support
and i think a key point about this particular example is that Lin Wood is a very visible public figure. This wasn't a single crazy comment buried in a long thread that a moderator could have missed. If there was any good-faith effort by Parler to moderate content, it would have caught the Lin Wood rant.
rrose··on Google suspending Parler from the Google Play store
youre mischaracterizing BLM. Parler posts were actively calling for violence and government overthrow. The mob at the capitol set up a gallows and were carrying handcuffs. To the (limited) extent that BLM protests turned violent, it was the result of situations on the ground getting out of hand, not planned in advance or incited by leadership. (Also, much of it was the result of aggression by police). There's certainly room for valid criticism of aspects of BLM protests but they are not at all comparable to the insurrection at the capitol this week.

if the boot fits
rrose··on Google suspending Parler from the Google Play store
if that happens, then people on parler can share their opinions by self publishing books, or printing flyers and passing them out, or yelling on street corners. If your complaint about these media is that they don't have the same reach as online social media, then we can agree we're not talking about censorship and instead talking about amplification of ideas.
rrose··on Google suspending Parler from the Google Play store
not deleting something allows it to be shared, or at least show up in search results. it allows it to be seen by people who otherwise would not see it- this is amplification.
rrose··on Google suspending Parler from the Google Play store
nothing was at stake, except the police officer who was beaten to death with a fire extinguisher, also the lives of the people targeted by the pipe bombs.
rrose··on Google suspending Parler from the Google Play store
the solution to this, obviously, is to break up monopolistic companies, not to force them to be mouthpieces for fascists.
rrose··on Google suspending Parler from the Google Play store
I seriously can't identify with this viewpoint. There's no censorship here- parler still exists, people are still free to share their (abhorrent) viewpoints there, Google is just choosing not to amplify the voices of people that have proven themselves capable of and prone to violence. All the pearl-clutching over free speech is totally overblown.
rrose··on Hemingway Editor
that is definitely worse than either of the other examples. your version doesn't specify which phrases are marked in green.

none of those things required technology. pre-industrial society would not have collapsed if laborers had weekends and a minimum wage
rrose··on Stingrays and Dirtboxes: how cops can secretly track your phone
the article also goes into the fact that these stingray devices can send text messages from your phone number and listen to your phone calls in real time. I dont think your analogy really captures that, and it's hard to imagine an argument for that being legal (at least without a warrant)
rrose··on Stingrays and Dirtboxes: how cops can secretly track your phone
OP is sort of shrugging off the information in this article by saying that it should be common sense that by carrying a phone you are trackable. I don't really disagree with that. But a major point of the article is that not only are you trackable, but you can be actively surveilled or even have your text messages spoofed, which is not common knowledge and isn't really encapsulated by the "radio in your pocket" analogy
rrose··on Stingrays and Dirtboxes: how cops can secretly track your phone
I feel like you're ignoring a key point here, which is that these stingray devices can MitM your phone by forcing it to send essentially unencrypted messages. That's both more technically complicated and more serious than passive tracking.
rrose··on An Open Version of WordNet
it... doesn't know the word "how"? literally like the second word i typed in. it seems like this must have some holes in it?
