rroot··on The positive effect of walking on creative thinking (2014) [pdf]
> _remember where exactly I heard a particular sentence_

Ha! Yes. Sometimes VLC doesn't remember where I was in the book so I have to faff around a bit and try to figure out where I was.

When I skip to content that I've heard before, usually I not only remember that I've heard them before, I remember where I was on my walk when I heard them!

rroot··on Finding the Darkest Pencil
Mitsubishi is an interesting company.

Cars, industrial size generators, erasers and now I see pitch black pencil.

Their Boxy eraser is amazing. Hard to get nowadays though.

Anyone know of a better one?

rroot··on Build the Modular Monolith First
Been there, done that, caused a burnout after a long time. 0/10, wouldn't recommend. Pay was good though.
rroot··on Build the Modular Monolith First
During the Covid pandemic, I watched from a distance a group of 6 people start and destroy a project.

After the 6 months, they didn't even have a a MVP.

This was run on a 6 month fund from the local government. They didn't know each other but they all knew that after 6 months it'd be over unless they'd secure more funding.

They spent the time faffing around, configuring things, splitting things, ... effectively making things harder for themselves.

Mr Edmam

I have received and read your response regarding my apology to you. I'm concerned that I may have upset you more than I realised.

My grandfather once told me not to take in too seriously random strangers comments. I try to live by that advice, wether it's comments from internet strangers, or, for that matter, customers at the phone shop.

This is of course not an advice from me to you. But I thought I'd share it with you in case you might find it useful too.

DBNR,

R. Root

Mr. Edman. I have no doubts about your experience. I'm sorry if I've hurt your feelings.
rroot··on Survey of workers’ views on salary transparency
You're right. I worded my reply very badly.

I was thinking about the psychological effects. The article mentions it but doesn't go into it: "However, 63% do fear it will be problematic to know how much their co-workers make"

If you look at the list of problems I wrote you see they are psychological.

4% quitting. But what effect does it have on the other 96%?

Quitting is an extreme response (not wrong, and I totally understand people who'd decide to quit).

But what's the response of the other 96%? No response? Lower productivity? Toxicity? Less helpful? Indifferent? Revenge? Destructive?

I doubt the 96% will have no response.

rroot··on KFC apologises for Kristallnacht chicken and cheese promotion
I think this is way beyond a "a fault in our system" error.

Until KFC publishes a detailed incident report I'd be keen to assume this was done by more than one Nazi sympathizer.

rroot··on We should have Markdown-rendered websites
I wasn't going to read that but I did. I kind of agree, but it's "social media" that's dying not the internet.

The social media has gone absolutely toxic in an frantic attempt to maximize revenue per user.

rroot··on We should have Markdown-rendered websites
The majority of the content you read on the web is there to lure your retinas so the website can shove sponsored photons into them.

The goal of de-cluttered web is nice. But if clutter is even just a notch more profitable, that ain't going to happen.

I came to say exactly this.
rroot··on Web automation: Don't use Selenium, use Playwright
I watched a few person test team blow itself up (people leaving, going toxic, doing minimum work or other things, ...) because they wanted to get it 'right from the start'. Many, many, months in it was barely not functional.
rroot··on FlashDB: An ultra-lightweight embedded database
I came to ask this. I went straight onto the website to look for SQLite comparison. It's after all the dominating embedded database.

I do realize the use cases can be different, but then say and show that in the comparison.

(I'm trying to be helpful by offering unsolicited advice :) - Brilliant work!

rroot··on Writing down what I do in Obsidian
That's good news. Does the app sync on exit?
rroot··on Why are glasses so expensive? The industry prefers to keep that blurry (2019)
Seems like the glasses market is ripe for a disruptive startup company?
rroot··on Writing down what I do in Obsidian
My only two frustrations with otherwise brilliant Joplin is the sync and (lack of encryption).

Encryption: data isn't encrypted at rest. The author seems to be quite dismissive of the idea: https://github.com/laurent22/joplin/issues/289

But then it's advertised as "end-to-end encryption" but that only refers to data being encrypted while it sits on a sync point. Perhaps within the definition of end-to-end, but might give people the idea that the data is encrypted from the time they enter it.

Sync: I set it to up sync so S3 so I could have mobile and desktop notes in sync.

If I create or edit a quick note, it doesn't get synced automatically! I've set the S3 sync to 5 minutes (the minimum), but you have to press sync after edit.

Last time I looked they were working on a server sync (instead of S3), so hopefully this gets fixed.

rroot··on Duplicati: Free backup software to store encrypted backups online
I highly recommend Borg Backup. I had to give up on Duplicati years ago, perhaps they're OK now. But Borg is magic.

rroot··on Ask HN: Advice that changed your life?
It was an amazing day when I discovered b-ok.
rroot··on Ask HN: Advice that changed your life?
Good story. I think advice can come in many form and shape, you just have to recognize it as such.

A bit like luck. Sure, you can win the lottery (if you buy a ticket). But a lot of what people call "luck" is a combination of:

1. Opportunity (which you can increase your chances of it occurring). Although some people are born in a highly advantageous environment.

2. Readiness to grab that opportunity (skills, finances, environment).

3. Realizing that you actually have #1 and #2 and going for it. I have sadly not always done that.

rroot··on Shell script best practices, from a decade of scripting things
1. If you have to start with a template, then shell script is not the right thing for whatever you're trying to accomplish.

2. Shell scripts are wonderful, but once they exceed a few lines (give or take 50), they've entered the fast track on becoming a maintenance headache and a liability.
