rreichel03··on Nearly all UK drivers say headlights are too bright
This is a problem with emergency vehicles too - many times I’ve been driving and unable to see a person on the road because the lights from a police or EMS vehicle are brighter than a thousand suns, hiding anything beyond. It feels like a Jurassic park thing - they made them brighter because they could (with minimal focus on externalities)
rreichel03··on iCloud Mail has DNS misconfigured?
A few years ago, when iCloud custom domains first launched, I found a bug where Apple would permanently cache the MX record. If an iCloud user had ever used a custom domain, future emails from iCloud to that domain would still get routed to their iCloud inbox—even if the domain’s MX record no longer pointed to Apple. They eventually fixed it, but didn’t think it deserved a bounty, which was a bit surprising.

I'm sure there's a ton of interesting surface area here.

rreichel03··on Decoding small QR codes by hand (2012)
This is really neat! I’ve wanted to know the QR code contents a few times without actually scanning with my phone so I actually built a super simple app to do this. Nothing fancy, just dumping the raw contents of the code to a string.

Happy to add any features folks might be interested in!

rreichel03··on Ask HN: Tools to learn music theory?
Wow I just played with this for a while - I've never had the opportunity to see and hear the waves at the same time and really enjoyed it. It was really neat getting the frequencies close in binaural mode and hearing the pulsing of the phases being slightly off. Thanks for sharing!
rreichel03··on Why are online recipes so long-winded?
I found that this was particularly notable while browsing on my phone so I built an iOS app extension [1] a year ago that attempts to fix this! Its not perfect and always a WIP, but its made my friends and family's lives a lot easier.

rreichel03··on iCloud+ custom email domains should be better
I jumped onto iCloud emails as soon as it became available this past fall and immediately ran into #6. I set up test email accounts in my iCloud account including my wife's just to see if it would work - Evidently that was a mistake because when I removed then attempted to reregister her email under her iCloud account (same "Family") it blocked her with the same opaque error message mentioned. I reached out to Apple support and after going back and forth for 1-2 months, they finally said it was "by design." Because my iCloud account first set up her email address (then subsequently removed it) it was permanently tied to my iCloud account even though we were in the same family. The support rep said there was nothing more that could be done other than moving to another email provider.

tl;dr; Emails can only ever be registered with one iCloud account ever, even in the same Apple family

rreichel03··on Show HN: Rapid Recipe – Reader mode for recipes
That's correct - Most recipe websites actually already encode the recipe in a structured format which is what this is parsing. No AI model is needed to decipher what is and isn't a recipe!
rreichel03··on Show HN: Rapid Recipe – Reader mode for recipes
That's great! I had some friends who are Android users who would love to use this so I'll send this their way.
rreichel03··on Show HN: Rapid Recipe – Reader mode for recipes
Currently its just shipping in English but if you browse a recipe website that is in another language it _should_ work if the recipe follows the standard metadata formats. If you come across a specific foreign language recipe that you think should work and doesn't shoot me an email at rapidrecipe AT reichel.dev
rreichel03··on Show HN: Rapid Recipe – Reader mode for recipes
Thanks! That's right in line with what I did.

My development directory fully empathizes with starting something and not quite shipping it. I ended up getting this working because I time boxed myself, which was surprisingly successful for me. I'm planning on continuing to time box for future projects like this. May not work for everyone, but could be worth a try.

rreichel03··on Show HN: Rapid Recipe – Reader mode for recipes
That's great feedback! I'll work on putting together a before/after - That should better communicate how it works. EDIT: Just added a side by side comparison of the page - Its not the cleanest but hopefully shows you what it does!
rreichel03··on Show HN: Rapid Recipe – Reader mode for recipes
Hey HN folks! Do you ever wish you could just bypass the entire life story at the beginning of every recipe? It drove me crazy the other day when I was just trying to find a recipe for some chicken wings so I decided to do something about it, just in time for the Holidays.

Rapid Recipe automatically detects when you’re reading a recipe and renders just the recipe without all of the backstory. It’s an App Safari Extension for iOS and macOS that you buy, set up once and it runs forever!

rreichel03··on macOS Monterey
I experienced this and found that switching to connecting via the right side USB C ports rather than the left side fixes thermal issues. It’s explained a bit more in this SO post: https://apple.stackexchange.com/a/363933
rreichel03··on Redefining Threat Modeling: Security team goes on vacation
I had the pleasure of meeting these folks while they were building out this program - It was incredible to see the work they put in to truly scale out threat modeling by enabling dev teams to understand security risk.

Kudos to them on helping push us to a more secure future!

rreichel03··on Popular YouTubers who are building their own sites
I spent some time a while back trying to build the “Shopify for Video streams” where creators could have a custom hosted channel that enables them to monetize however they’d like! Ultimately I didn’t do a great job of marketing it, but if anyone’s interested in giving it a spin for their channel feel free to fill out the beta interest form here: https://yourchannel.rreichel.dev
rreichel03··on Handheld two-way radios for preppers and other curious folks
Ordered! Thanks so much for the suggestion!
rreichel03··on Handheld two-way radios for preppers and other curious folks
This is an area I've been interested in learning more about for a while (not for prepping, just learning). Are there any good resources for getting started with ham radio? I've been looking for a guide that can explain the math and physics behind it along with the electronics.
rreichel03··on Facebook Has Been Showing Military Gear Ads Next to “Insurrection” Posts
As an anecdote, since July they've started showing me ads for body armor almost nonstop whenever I actually open the app. Just the other day it was a body armor ad then an ad for a tactical communication earpiece.
rreichel03··on A Guide to Threat Modelling for Developers
Our org has instituted threat modeling as part of our SDL and it has been instrumental in building a culture of security focus. We found that it both allowed teams to build relationships with us while also setting aside time for them to think specifically about the security of their feature. If you’re thinking about starting this, do it! The benefits for us have been enormous.
