rpigab··on There Is No Future for Online Safety Without Privacy and Security
I can't prove that there are no technical solutions to this kind of problems, but it certainly feels like so (to me).

It's like electronic voting, you can have the best cryptography hardware and software in the world, if the end user does not understand at least on a surface level how it works, it will be vulnerable against manipulation. You can certainly keep the same system and educate all users, but that's a whole other class of problem.

rpigab··on There Is No Future for Online Safety Without Privacy and Security
I have a categorical swipe to make, sadly this is a human problem, and attempts to solve it using technology are doomed to fail or to be increasingly complex and require endless modifications.

Your solution sounds good and should work fine, and be easy to implement, which is perfect! But people will soon wonder what all the elderly people that are living in retirement homes without internet access are doing on porn sites watching mostly the overwatch and fortnite cosplay themed videos...

rpigab··on The gift card accountability sink
And I thought I was being paranoid when I redeemed Steam gift cards before even exiting the store.
rpigab··on I announced my divorce on Instagram and then AI impersonated me
Thanks, I wasn't aware.
rpigab··on I announced my divorce on Instagram and then AI impersonated me
Classic "any interaction is positive interaction". That's modern platforms to you.

Do not try LinkedIn. Not even once.

rpigab··on I announced my divorce on Instagram and then AI impersonated me
One day, you won't be able to delete your social network account anymore. There will be a delete button, but the account will stay, and it will keep posting after you're gone, it won't care whether you are doing something else entirely or whether you're dead, the show will go on.

The shareholders will be content, because they see value in that. The users might not, but not many of them are actual humans, nowadays they're mostly AI, who has time to read and/or post on social media? Just ask your favorite AI what's the hottest trends on social networks, it should suffice to scratch the itch.

rpigab··on I'm just having fun
Thank you, I just did the opposite in Microsoft teams PWA, "text-transform: uppercase;", now I feel like the whole company is mad, everyone using shouty caps at each other, and every message makes me laugh!
rpigab··on Show HN: Stop AI scrapers from hammering your self-hosted blog (using porn)
If that's what it takes to fight back against AI crawlers, users will have to accept a fair amount of actually visible porn in blogs, maybe also on Wikipedia.

This is not enshittification, it's progress.

rpigab··on The Tor Project is switching to Rust
They should be fine since I made up the setting name, and even though I am not familiar with Tor client's configuration, I don't believe this is possible without altering its source code.

Also, using this kind of software without understanding how its works even just a little doesn't protect much of your privacy.

rpigab··on The Tor Project is switching to Rust
I had that problem too, very slow on network requests, just change the setting "num_relays_proxied" from 3 to 1 to make it blazingly fast.
rpigab··on Craft software that makes people feel something
That's how I feel about my commandline Solitaire game (gitlab.com/rpigab/solitaire-cli, playable on Gitlab pages with an AZERTY or QWERTY keyboard), I'm the end user, I like playing it and making it, but that's about it!
rpigab··on Git 3.0 will use main as the default branch
Does he have a MSc?
rpigab··on Gaming on Linux has never been more approachable
In my experience, Steam client and most games work great on Debian and Ubuntu, but you should know for GNU/Linux systems, it's only officially supported on Ubuntu (maybe SteamOS is implicit), I can't find the information on Steam's website or support pages, but this is a response I got from Steam Support when reporting a Steam client UI bug on Debian with GNOME, a while ago.
rpigab··on CornHub
Yeah, beating your cob for too long does that.
rpigab··on CornHub
Not Searching For Wheat, indeed, it's a cornsite.
rpigab··on I don’t need a Steam Machine
I don't need any of the 3 announced Steam hardware products, I already have a decent gaming PC running Steam on Ubuntu, a VR headset (Meta Quest 3, that I would not have bought had I known earlier, though it works wonders streaming PCVR games through ALVR+SteamVR) and a classic Steam controller that is more reliable that my Xbox One one on BLE.

But I do benefit from the announcement, because this means Valve will continue investing in the GNU/Linux ecosystem, and this will net more Linux players, which in turn means better software overall. Yay!

rpigab··on Dark Pattern Games
I was about to say Dwarf Fortress, but you said "modern", so I'll go with Minecraft.
rpigab··on Steam Machine
We can now start to dream of a future without Windows Kernel level Anti Cheat software in every competitive multiplayer game.
rpigab··on XSLT RIP
If they have security in mind, they should intend to deprecate and remove HTML. The benefits of keeping it are slowly disappearing as AI content on the web is taking over, and HTML contains far more quirks than XSLT, and let's not talk about aging C codebases about HTML...
rpigab··on Recall for Linux
Plus, Epic and Gog work through the third-party launcher "Heroic Game Launcher", for Ubisoft, EA and Blizzard, you can just install their launcher using Steam compatibility, or Lutris, then run games from it.

The major hurdle is games plagued with Windows-only Kernel-level anti cheat software (mostly competitive multiplayer games): https://areweanticheatyet.com/

rpigab··on EVs are depreciating faster than gas-powered cars
Wierd that we're presenting SpaceX rockets that explode shortly after takeoff as a problem.

They're objects that disintegrate in the atmosphere at some point when you use them. That's normal, it even has a name: rapid unscheduled disassembly.

rpigab··on Users only care about 20% of your application
They never use the software the way I intended them to. I should get rid of all of them. No users = no bugs.
rpigab··on Users only care about 20% of your application
That's fine, I care about 0% of my users.
rpigab··on You did this with an AI and you do not understand what you're doing here
"I heard you were extremely quick at math"

Me: "yes, as a matter of fact I am"

Interviewer: "Whats 14x27"

Me: "49"

Interviewer: "that's not even close"

me: "yeah, but it was fast"

rpigab··on XSLT – Native, zero-config build system for the Web
My first resume was in XSLT, because I didn't want to duplicate HTML tags and style around, it worked really well, and it was fun to see the xml first when clicking "view source".
rpigab··on Show HN: I made a 3D printed VTOL drone
Funny nitpick, this definition applies to most drones, because most drones sold are x-copters and do not have wings, they always take-off and land vertically.

This should be "a 3D printed winged VTOL drone"

rpigab··on My AI skeptic friends are all nuts
Good thing it's funded by generous investors or groups who are okay with losing money on every sale (they'll make it up in volume), and never stop funding, and never raise prices, insert ads or enshittify.
rpigab··on Have I Been Pwned 2.0
No user ever had a real use case for seeing a button that says "invite X" that doesn't send an invite on the platform, but instead sends an email to X who doesn't have a Linkedin account.

And if you decline, it asks you again. Two times using different wording.

rpigab··on Writing "/etc/hosts" breaks the Substack editor
Yes, that's affirmatively aesthetically the best way to ensure artificiality automatically, or alternatively applicability and acceptability, there's appropriately a whole chapter about it in my autobiography, had to adventurously include it authentically (obviouslyyyyy).
rpigab··on Writing "/etc/hosts" breaks the Substack editor
Between around 2005 and 2011 in France, if a child was born and parents Mr Bar and Mrs Baz wanted to transmit both of their last names, he or she had to be named "Foo Bar--Baz". No, that's not a typo, that's two hyphens. Check out "Circulaire du 6 décembre 2004 relative au nom de famille" if you don't believe me.

Yes, the people in charge probably didn't think or know of SQL comments. However, it worked well as long as input is sanitized and not concatenated, which is often the case using modern frameworks or common sense.

However, nowadays, we just put a WAF in front of everything, it's cheaper that way because common sense is hard to come by. People like Foo Bar--Baz still exist, and unless they've had their name changed, they're sometimes running into extremely wierd issues in the web software they're using.
