rottingchris··on Who will buy your services if you fire us all?
So what would a new system based on this new reality look like?

Most people sustain themselves using the money they get in exchange for their labor. Based on history and growing income inequality, no one seems to believe the next step is a Star Trek-like post-scarcity economy.

The "how will people afford X??" is an existential question. If human labor has no value and UBI is not an option, then what is going to happen to the people?

rottingchris··on The U.S. spent $30B to ditch textbooks for laptops and tablets
We're talking about kids. You appear to expect small children to behave like adults. The school environment is supposed to help kids learn. We are the adults who have (collectively) designed this system, who force kids into schools, and who are responsible for them.

> But U.S. law prohibits illegal immigrants from getting a green card

Your link and quote does not support this specific claim. The law linked is about naturalization and not about being granted permanent resident status.

rottingchris··on A surprise with how '#!' handles its program argument in practice
Keep in mind that the bash you get on MacOS is bash 3.2 released in 2006 so relying on it for portability might not be a good idea.
rottingchris··on Half a million California fast food workers will now earn $20 per hour
What are you even calculating?

You took 500,000 workers from across the entire state and then picked a single company's expenses. The old wages for those 500,000 people at $16/h and your 1560h/y estimate would already be over $12bn.

rottingchris··on Carrefour puts ‘shrinkflation’ price warnings on food to shame brands
No, what you're describing has nothing to do with greed. Self-interest is not the same as greed. There would be nothing between greed and charity using according to your definition. Indeed, keeping the car when they didn't need it would also be greed. The only in-between is selling it for a fair value - but there is no objective fair price.
rottingchris··on ‘It’s Not My Responsibility’ to Save the Office Economy
People who live in cities are not a uniform hive mind. Some people left but the vast majority stayed.
rottingchris··on UK airport scraps 100ml liquid rule with new scanners
Many European countries require taking your shoes off. At the very least, I have had to do it every single time at multiple UK and Polish airports in the last couple of years.
rottingchris··on It’s time for Alphabet to spin off YouTube?
Revenue is independent of expenses. It cancels out when you calculate profit.
rottingchris··on Shortage of affordable housing guarantees that some people will become homeless
> Homelessness isn't caused by tech workers making more money than you.

This is not at all the point made by the author. The finger is being pointed at regulations which prevent increasing the supply in housing driven by NIMBYism. The article points out that the crisis dates back to the 80s - predating not just the current tech explosion but also the dotcom boom. Knowledge workers are not just programmers.

> Other cities with harsher climates have less homeless people because they can't survive the winters homeless, but that's ignored in this article.

The article does not ignore but explicitly addresses your point ("[...] With similar reasoning, we can reject the idea that climate explains varying rates of homelessness. [...]") and brings high rates of homelessness in cities with harsh winter climates: Seattle, NYC, and Boston.

> There is more nuance to homelessness than "tech workers make too much money"

What you wrote has nothing to do with what's actually in the article.

rottingchris··on Oldest and Fatherless: The Terrible Secret of Tom Bombadil (2011)
Elrond had heard of Tom Bombadil.

There was silence. At last Elrond spoke again. [...] The Barrow-wights we know by many names; and of the Old Forest many tales have been told: all that now remains is but an outlier of its northern march. Time was when a squirrel could go from tree to tree from what is now the Shire to Dunland west of Isengard. In those lands I journeyed once, and many things wild and strange I knew. But I had forgotten Bombadil, if indeed this is still the same that walked the woods and hills long ago, and even then was older than the old. That was not then his name. Iarwain Ben-adar we called him, oldest and fatherless. But many another name he has since been given by other folk: Forn by the Dwarves, Orald by Northern Men, and other names beside. He is a strange creature, but maybe I should have summoned him to our Council.'

rottingchris··on TurboTax’s 20-Year Fight to Stop Americans from Filing Taxes for Free (2019)
You might already know this but taxes you pay to the country you're resident in are (in most cases, depends on the country and the tax treaties) deducted from your taxable income.

You only need to pay Federal income tax and since most countries have higher taxation rates than the US, most expats and up with no tax liability on their income. Capital income taxes are a major pain though.

rottingchris··on Google seems to have broken email forwarding
He doesn't use them. His employees chose to forward their email because they want to use the same interface for both their work and personal email. He does host @dnalounge.com inboxes.
rottingchris··on Google seems to have broken email forwarding
He does create a work email account for his employees. He doesn't want to force them to use a separate email client so he allows his employees to set up forwarding from his server to their personal gmail account. They can use his smtp server from gmail for sending stuff out so they get to use both their personal and work email from the same interface.
