rotnewson··on Practicing privacy: Encryption
Thanks for taking 1 tiny part of my point and trying to destroy it.

I chose the passphrase "The Brown cow jumps over the m00n!" as an example not "The brown cow jumps over the moon." which is a significantly worse passphrase, especially considering every word is available in a dictionary.

The OP had trouble memorizing more than 16 characters for a passphrase so I suggested something easier yet still solid yet you seemed to think I suggested just a plain english sentence of words.

If you can't remember 1 password over 20 characters that you will use a lot with a password manager you probably need to change what kind of passwords you make.

Instead of "E=E<4oc^(z&kj6Snm9uy" do something like "The Brown cow jumps over the m00n!".

Set the password manager to make you enter the password if you haven't used it for 30 seconds (for a few days so you remember your password).

You're using a password manager with a good password that is easy to remember but the you do use the password manager to generate hard to remember passwords like the one above.

I'm guessing this is either because of chrome's sandboxed tabs or the amount of RAM you have on your computer (or a combination of both).

Firefox is lighter on the RAM usage these days especially with more tabs because of the sandboxing.

rotnewson··on Ask HN: Good startup web hosting
You really should be specific about technologies and everyone will have their favourites but heroku is a good starting point and has a free tier.
rotnewson··on Do a whois on cnn.com
Since no one explained it, it is whois spam. You can find more info through searching, they are not hacked they are just popular sites so they attract the spam.

And if you don't want to google people just register name servers with xxx.com.xxxx.tld and their name server will show up when someone searches for xxx.com

> Bit by a dog? Eh, make it let go, and then walk away, no need to check for a rabies vaccination tag. After all, what are the odds? LOL

I don't know where you live but it is pretty standard to get a few vaccines (rabies included) when bitten by an unknown dog as a precaution.

Same reason people get tetanus shots with puncture wounds.

rotnewson··on Ask HN: Best way(s) to distribute a self-hosted, non-compiled product
The github way is pretty good because most businesses use some sort of virtualization (usually vmware) once they become a certain size.

But really it depends on who you are selling to and what you are selling, some companies just have the customer pay for a server and then the company ships it out with a guy to install it (better for small businesses that don't have dedicated sysadmins).

This is something of a major problem to solve with one of two major outcomes that aren't mutually exclusive:

1. The blocking comes up with many false positives blocking many things that shouldn't be blocked (the John Graham-Cumming issue)

2. They don't catch everything, which is very likely, and the work required to get around blocking by teenagers is minimal.

rotnewson··on Ask HN: Best Post-NSA debacle Dropbox Alternative?
I use tarsnap and like it but it really isn't a dropbox alternative.

If you want client side encryption with close to dropbox functionality use spideroak, if you want snapshot/dedupped/backup + encryption use tarsnap.

rotnewson··on Ask HN: Fair and decent email providers?
My understanding is that people went to fastmail to get away from google's tracking not the NSA.
