rossng··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2025)
Ah, this is specifically for the Forward Deployed Robotics Engineer role.

For that role, we are currently looking for candidates who are already living in the Netherlands. If you are a foreigner, but already live here, we can continue sponsoring your visa.

For the other software roles we will consider candidates who want to move to Amsterdam from abroad. We can get you the necessary work visa.

We’re creating robots that autonomously construct buildings. We design all of our hardware and software in-house in central Amsterdam, starting with autonomous bricklaying robots.

Building a robot like this means solving all sorts of interesting challenges: figuring out the robot's position with sub-mm precision; navigating autonomously around the building site; automating measurement and calibration of new robots; lots of distributed systems and so on.

Our robots are now continuously deployed on customer sites and we are earning real money as a masonry contractor. The full team is more than 60 people and we're growing rapidly to meet demand.

Our stack is mostly: Rust, TypeScript, Python, NixOS.

Some open roles:

- Software Engineer, Controls

- Software Engineer, Machine Vision

- Assembly/manufacturing technicians and robot operators

https://www.monumental.co/jobs

P.S. We're always on the lookout for very strong generalist engineers who can operate at any layer of the stack (firmware, networking, UI, application code - whatever's needed!) Drop me an email if this sounds like you.

rossng··on OpenAI to buy AI startup from Jony Ive
I assume it's 'large language and vision model'.

But, for sanity's sake, if we insist on putting 'vision' in there, let's at least call them LVLMs!

rossng··on My quest to make motorcycle riding that tad bit safer
Easy to say when you don't live next to a road frequented by drivers with ridiculous modified exhausts.

rossng··on Ask HN: Best way to simultaneously run multiple projects locally?
My suggestion would be Process Compose[1]. Just write a simple config telling it what commands to run; it will launch them all and give you a nice TUI to read the stdout and control each process individually.

We’re creating robots that autonomously construct buildings. We design all of our hardware and software in-house in central Amsterdam, starting with autonomous bricklaying robots.

We have built a machine vision pipeline that can achieve sub-millimetre localisation on construction sites, and a software stack that lets us prototype on the fly. We have a pipeline full of exciting (building) projects and are making real revenue as a masonry contractor each month.

The full team is now about 45 people (and still growing fast!) There’s strong customer demand for what we’re building and we need talented people to meet it.

Our stack is mostly: Rust, TypeScript, Python, NixOS.

We can sponsor visas for any engineering position.

English is the primary language at Monumental, and we have many non-Dutch speakers. However, Dutch is a _useful_ skill to have if you are frequently deployed on construction sites (and we do take that into consideration for the FDRE role).

rossng··on Boom's XB-1 becomes first civil aircraft to go supersonic
Strange definition of 'civil'. I think I'd use 'built by a private company' instead.

Great achievement though.

Edit: apparently it was unclear to many readers - Concorde was a supersonic civilian aircraft. And, though partly built by private companies, it was certainly a state project.

rossng··on We're bringing Pebble back
So cool that you were able to make this happen. I backed Pebble on Kickstarter in 2012 and no smartwatch has ever really appealed to me since then.

The screen on my original Pebble died a long time ago and I've always wondered whether I should try to bring it back to life. Perhaps now is the time!

rossng··on Live London Underground / bus maps taken down by TfL trademark complaint
They could have easily offered a free license to use the trademark. This project wasn't harming them in the slightest. Demanding the map's removal and implying that he will have to pay to put it back up shows a lack of empathy.

Late last year we started hiring for a new role: Forward Deployed Robotics Engineer (also open to interns). We are looking for people can bridge the gap between software engineering and the construction site: operating the robot; spotting opportunities to build faster and better; and rapidly hacking them into existence.

My colleague has written a blog post[1] about his experience in this role - give it a read if you're interested.

rossng··on Autodesk deletes old forum posts suddenly
Does Autodesk have any remaining users that actually _enjoy_ being their customer? Their CAD software is unstable and painful (just try installing it...); architects resent their stewardship of Revit[1] and so on.

This seems like an existential risk to the company if something better comes along. Sure, they have massive lock-in, but these things don't last forever. Remember when we all thought that Microsoft Office file formats guaranteed an eternal monopoly?

rossng··on The future of software is Nix
It feels like there might still be time for Nix to morph into something that can get mass adoption. But it probably requires some radical technical changes and the controversy around flakes (which are incredibly useful) suggests that the existing community might not accept that.

Whatever comes next, IMO the killer feature will be that it enables rock solid developer tooling. LSPs that work; typed inputs to modules; control of deployment of NixOS machines and so on.

rossng··on Ask HN: Alternatives to Bitwarden?
That's a fair position - I'm also not insistent on using an open source product. I'd just prefer that the nature of the product isn't silently changed underneath me.

If it's proprietary, and that's clear from the start, I don't think that's necessarily a problem.

rossng··on Migrating from Create React App to Vite

rossng··on Gleam Is Pragmatic
Hmm, it definitely looks more interesting in combination with effect handlers. Still not sure I find it super compelling in Gleam vs just not using callbacks.
rossng··on Gleam Is Pragmatic
The `use` syntax is interesting - don't recall seeing anything similar before. But I'm struggling to understand how exactly it is executed and a glance at the Gleam docs didn't help.

Is the `use` statement blocking (in which case it doesn't seem that useful)? Or does it return immediately and then await at the point of use of the value it binds?

We’re creating robots that autonomously construct buildings. We design all of our hardware and software in-house in central Amsterdam, and we’re starting with autonomous bricklaying robots.

We have built a machine vision pipeline that can achieve sub-millimetre localisation on construction sites, and a neat software stack that lets us configure and control robots with ease. We’re deploying our robots on real construction sites and have started making the first revenue from our bricklaying-as-a-service model.

The software team is now nine people (~35 people overall), and continuing to grow. There’s strong customer demand for what we’re building, and we’re starting to scale up robot production to meet it.

Our stack is mostly: Rust, TypeScript, Python, NixOS.
