I'm Cyrille Rossant, a neuroscience researcher and software engineer at the International Brain Laboratory and University College London.

I'm interested in mathematics, scientific computing, data visualization, computer graphics, GPU programming, web applications, AI. I wrote several books on Python for scientific computing.

After a sudden personal event, I decided to devote a large portion of my research activities to the shaken baby syndrome controversy: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37650402

rossant··on AI companies in race to demonstrate their model most threatening to humanity
> And even more dramatically, when asked about rumours that its model, Claude, had killed his wife by hacking into the family’s WiFi-connected microwave, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei replied “Well, yeah, sometimes.”

I had to read that twice. "Oh okay. The whole thing was satire."

rossant··on When did Google get so weird?
I can’t upvote this enough. This is such a terrible idea. We’re really living in a dystopian world.
rossant··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
Starting? I've been worried for more than 4 years.
rossant··on A misalignment of AI in mathematics
I agree. What would stop the AI from explaining the proof in a way human mathematicians can understand, and then giving them a roadmap for spreading it through the community via textbooks, conferences, and so on?

> ... 25 initial signatories — all Fields Medallists —

As a non-native English speaker, I initially understood this to mean that all living Fields Medallists had signed. I later realized that it meant only that all the signatories were Fields Medallists.

(Apparently, there are 47 living Fields Medallists today.)

rossant··on I resigned from Anthropic today
An AI, either acting autonomously or under human direction, hacks Russian/North Korea/etc. intelligence systems and convinces them that the US has launched ballistic missiles at them. The end.
rossant··on Research acceleration: The view inside OpenAI
Same. Defining acronyms should become a habit when writing.
rossant··on From Gradients to ChatGPT
Am I the only one to find AI-generated courses very hard to read?
rossant··on A week of using Codex more than Claude
Yes, codex/sol is extremely meticulous and obsessed with details. It will happily massively over engineer things to reduce the number of failure modes as much as possible. It's up to the user to instruct it to "chill" if this level of robustness is not necessary for a given task.
rossant··on A week of using Codex more than Claude
I was about to say the same thing. I wish people gave some indication on the type of tasks they use the models with. Which kind of software, industry, programming languages, or even non-coding tasks. I suspect the experience might be vastly different from one type of task to another.

Two spaces after a period is correct?
rossant··on Memory prices climb 500% in 12 months
Really happy I got a new PC last year with 128 GB of RAM, 4 TB SSD, and an RTX 5090. This would have been prohibitively expensive now.
rossant··on Numba in the Browser: Unlocking a New Scientific Python Stack in JupyterLite
Congrats for a serious engineering achievement!

I had experimented with a similar idea in an infinitely more primitive way more than ten years ago (https://cyrille.rossant.net/numpy-browser-llvm/). I'm glad to see so much progress since then.

rossant··on Nano Banana 2 removed from Google Earth
I can't wait for nano banana on pathology images.
rossant··on How to Exist
I came here to say this. You beat me to it.
rossant··on The End of an Era
Is that still going to be the case in 1 year? 5? 10?
rossant··on Pacing the frontier
This is serious. We're in uncharted territory. The geopolitical context is already complicated enough that we shouldn't be dismissive of such a rapid technological race. I'm glad AI leaders are taking it seriously. I'm surprised so many HN commenters aren't.

On the other hand, I'm pessimistic about initiatives like this being effective on a global scale (though they could certainly work at the national level).

rossant··on Don't put your name to bot-written content
What if my prose is AI-assisted, but it's the result of hours of conversations with an agent, with constant back-and-forth, dozens of iterative rewrites, and refinement until the structure, tone, and style are exactly right? Focusing on the intent and the desired outcome rather than manually laying out one word after another.
rossant··on Terence Tao's ChatGPT conversation about the Jacobian Conjecture counterexample
This is talking to an AI colleague and not to a chatbot. That's how you use frontier models or coding agents nowadays to do good work.
rossant··on Why write code in 2026
I don't write code anymore, because AI writes better code than me. I could write code, but the next AI would find 10 ways to make it better and more consistent with the rest of the AI-generated codebase. So I just let it write all of it. However, I inspect it all carefully and I constantly asks it to reflect on the code quality, to refactor, to reorganize, to make the code as good as possible. The end result is code that is much better than anything I could have written myself.

And I should mention that I have 30+ years of programming experience.

rossant··on 98% Isn't Much
aka expectation
rossant··on Fast Software, the Best Software (2019)
I fully agree. I loathe slow software. I hate bloat. I love fast software. As a developer, I'm completely, even irrationally, obsessed with speed, performance optimization, and profiling. I wish more developers felt the same way.
rossant··on Mouse: Precision Editing Tools for AI Coding Agents
Pretty sure this website is satire.
rossant··on Command and Conquer Generals natively ported to macOS, iPhone, iPad using Fable
That, and also the very long comma-separated lists with sometimes 10+ items.
rossant··on David Beazley – Programming Courses
That's one way to see it. Can't we also imagine that more and more people now rely on AI rather than humans to learn programming (or more accurately learn vibe-coding)?
rossant··on AI Agent Guidelines for CS336 at Stanford
Interesting. It makes me think of the idea of fighting piracy by providing a solid legal alternative through streaming platforms, etc.

Looking at him I can't believe he's 100. I haven't seen that many centenaries that look that fit.
