rorylawless··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
This is a deeply deranged opinion piece. The author ties himself into knots to conflate a tiny number of high profile instances involving social media posts with harassment and other negative behavior involving electronic communication.
rorylawless··on Premier league bans gambling sponsors
Before leaving Britain, I lived in an area that had a ~50% poverty rate. The number of betting shops, small and large brands, just on the local high street alone was ridiculous. It reduced somewhat as gambling has moved online, however there is clearly still money to be made in bricks and mortar gambling.
rorylawless··on Hannah Fry Wins the Leelavati Prize in 2026 for Mathematics Outreach
She gave a talk at my then employer during the pandemic, I think that was my first time listening to her. Well deserved.
rorylawless··on Check out the new US passport
And only available in person at the Washington Passport Agency.
rorylawless··on Show HN: Are You in the Weights?
This was listed as a hallucination but is the most accurate for my name: “A NAME THAT MAY REFER TO AN INDIVIDUAL, BUT I CAN’T IDENTIFY A SINGLE WELL-KNOWN PERSON WITH CERTAINTY FROM THE QUERY ALONE.”
rorylawless··on USCIS Will Grant 'Adjustment of Status' Only in Extraordinary Circumstances
Slight correction here. It is fraud if you intend to stay after getting married. Nobody cares if you get married on a tourist visa and leave the country after.
rorylawless··on New Nightmare Just Dropped: '3D' Animated Ads on Trucks in Traffic
In DC too. Usually associated with political campaigns, although I recently saw one advertising Uber Teens outside a school.
rorylawless··on UK to permanently ban future generations from buying cigarettes
Yes, the government has concocted a dastardly conspiracy to cut health system costs by reducing access to a known cause of illness.
rorylawless··on Changes to GitHub Copilot individual plans
I’ve recently been unwillingly exposed to this side of things. It’s truly an insane, there must be a better way?
rorylawless··on Slop Cop
And it is not impossible the posts ended up in the training corpus.
rorylawless··on StackOverflow: Retiring the Beta Site
It looks like a clone of present-day Reddit to me.
rorylawless··on Author of "Careless People" banned from saying anything negative about Meta
A couple of podcasts in my rotation had Sarah Wynn-Williams on as a guest [1] [2], with the caveat that she was unable to talk about the book or comment on the Meta. Absurd.

I need to give this a read soon.

rorylawless··on Show HN: 30u30.fyi – Is your startup founder on Forbes' most fraudulent list?
Is "30 under 30" one of those schemes that require people to put themselves forward and maybe pay a fee? I've seen a bunch of "awards" (particularly for companies) that follow the same model.
rorylawless··on Philly courts will ban all smart eyeglasses starting next week
Quote from the article subheading:

"The First Judicial District of Pennsylvania said the rule is designed to protect witnesses and jurors from intimidation."

It seems like a perfectly reasonable motivation to ban any device from courts.

rorylawless··on Democratic Backsliding Reaches Western Democracies, U.S. Decline "Unprecedented"
What do you mean by “scientific”? These concepts aren’t discoverable in nature. However, they’re transparently defined in the code book and the “opinions” are available for analysis in the expert coder-level dataset.
rorylawless··on Mistral AI Releases Forge
The fine tuning endpoint is deprecated according to the API docs. Is this the replacement?

rorylawless··on Ageless Linux – Software for humans of indeterminate age
The simpler explanation is that we live in a world that is more connected than ever so politicians, campaigners and the rest can get policy ideas almost instantly. There is no grand conspiracy, just a smaller world.
rorylawless··on Bluesky CEO Jay Graber is stepping down
For high-level football/calcio/soccer at least, Reddit is and has been better for a long time. Often goal and other key highlights are uploaded before the broadcasters.
rorylawless··on Claude becomes number one app on the U.S. App Store
People will always need shoes.
rorylawless··on Statement on the comments from Secretary of War Pete Hegseth
Could this escalate to the point that Anthropic exits the US and sets up shop elsewhere? Or would the company cease to exist before it got to that point?
rorylawless··on Hacker News.love – 22 projects Hacker News didn't love
The bitcoin entry is off. jdoliner‘s criticism ended up being more true than false; it isn’t wildly trusted as a medium of exchange and it being an “asset class” doesn’t disprove that.
rorylawless··on Password managers less secure than promised

rorylawless··on The Godless Students of London University
Thanks for sharing this. I attended UCL a decade ago so it is fascinating to read about its founding, 200 years ago.

rorylawless··on Gentoo on Codeberg
There is an entire ecosystem of products that have locked themselves (and their users) into Github for one reason or another. I hope a critical mass builds that forces them to open up to a wider range of alternatives.
rorylawless··on Ministry of Justice orders deletion of the UK's largest court reporting database
This aligns with the explanation given in response to the urgent question. What looks like a simple breach of contract issue is being weaponized in bad faith by politicians who spend far too much time time on the shadier parts of the internet.

rorylawless··on Palantir Gets Millions of Dollars from New York City's Public Hospitals
So, they’re basically a traditional consultancy firm focused on data analytics, particularly record linkage?
rorylawless··on NetNewsWire Turns 23
Happy Birthday, NNW! Such an elegant app, that does one thing extremely well. Here's to 23 more years!.
rorylawless··on Ireland rolls out basic income scheme for artists
Growing up in the UK, we would be sent to a “play scheme” during the school holidays. Weird phrase.
