rorylawless··on Data engineering and software engineering are converging
Prefacing this with an acknowledgement that I'm a public sector data analyst by trade so my experience may not be universal.

My view is that it isn't so much a lack of "self-respect and confidence" but an acknowledgment that the path of least resistance is often the best one. Often data teams are something that was tacked on as an afterthought and the organizational environment is oriented towards buying off-the-shelf solutions rather than developing things in house.

Saying that, versional control and replicable environments are becoming standard in the profession and, as data professionals become first class citizens in organizations, we may find that orgs orient themselves towards a more production focused environment.

rorylawless··on Rv, a new kind of Ruby management tool
Very unfortunate name collision with rv for R (https://github.com/A2-ai/rv).
rorylawless··on China Is Run by Engineers, and the US by Too Many Lawyers
Who went on to train the lawyers and judges in the MBA/Friedman orthodoxy.
rorylawless··on Apple weighs using Anthropic or OpenAI to power Siri
If Apple still had “courage”, they’d give up on AI and release a truly revolutionary “average phone”. A phone stripped of social media apps and features, with only access to music, mapping and messaging apps.
rorylawless··on Brit politicians question Fujitsu's continued role in public sector contracts
What’s due compensation? In this case people caught up in this failure were imprisoned or took their own lives. No amount of money can undo that.
rorylawless··on Microsoft-backed UK tech unicorn Builder.ai collapses into insolvency
The M&M store is the only legit business in London.
rorylawless··on Show HN: Rv, a Package Manager for R
Ok, this is really promising. I've always found renv to be slightly frustrating to use and it ends up breaking in mysterious ways after a time. rv was a joy to use in a small personal repo.
rorylawless··on Mark Cuban offers to fund former 18f employees
Had DOGE been more than 2 brain cells fighting for 3rd place, they would have spun out 18F as an independent organization. They could have taken inspiration from how the British government did something similar with the Behavioural Insights Team.

The US government could have even secured favorable rates for a period of time so it could continue to benefit from the 18F expertise.

rorylawless··on Forum with 2.6M posts being deleted due to UK Online Safety Act
I don’t understand this. The monarchy hasn’t had influence over parliament and the government for over 300 years. You may be able to point to attempts at doing so (eg the Black Spider letter), however, parliament is fully sovereign.
rorylawless··on Musk-led group makes $97B bid for control of OpenAI
If pre-Musk twitter was in the hands of censorship, what is it now? By all accounts it is a bot-infested echo chamber for his own bizarre obsessions where dissent is quickly stamped out.
rorylawless··on Man who lost Bitcoin fortune in Welsh tip explores purchase of entire landfill
At which point does this move from obsession to mental illness?
rorylawless··on Government planned it 7 years, beavers built a dam in 2 days and saved $1M
The ones that didn’t do that tended to die before they could pass on their genes.
rorylawless··on The paper passport's days are numbered
Additionally, Legal Permanent Residents of the US can use it too.
rorylawless··on Positron, a next-generation data science IDE
It is very much a fork of VS Code at the moment but I appreciate the massively reduced friction getting R up and running. While RStudio is still the best IDE for R, it is beginning to feel dated and this will likely overtake it as the main environment in relatively short time.
rorylawless··on London's Evening Standard axes daily print edition
What's more, Evgeny Lebedev sits in the House of Lords. Despite the sanctions following the invasion of Ukraine, Britain is still lousy with Russian oligarchs with a worrying amount of influence.
rorylawless··on What's Going on with ‘Nonplussed’? (2017)
Another Brit confirming this understanding of the word (although I just found out about the original meaning about a minute ago).
rorylawless··on Apple will cut off 3rd-party appstore updates if iPhone is not in EU for a month
This feels like a malicious version of the fair usage exceptions to the EU's mobile phone roaming regulations. I hope the EU tightens up the rules to prevent this as these does not seem to be any justification for this, crossing a border doesn't suddenly add additional cost to Apple.
rorylawless··on [dead]
Ironically, I discovered this when attempting to search for information about another search engine (Stract, fyi).
