rorylawless··on Kiki – Accountability monster for people who are easily distracted
I’ve always wondered 1) if those things are real and, if so, do they 2) ask for permission to include the logo.
rorylawless··on Email experiments: filtering out external images
Yup, email is usually the preferred communication tool of record. In a previous job, our messages on Teams were wiped after 8 days so anything that needed to be recorded had to be in an email or some form of document.
rorylawless··on How London became the rest of the world’s startup capital
It isn’t universally awful in the US. Washington, DC’s system is great and should be the cornerstone of any revitalization that isn’t so reliant on the federal government.
rorylawless··on Show HN: We Built the 1. EU-Sovereignty Audit for Websites
How are they estimating migration costs? It claims my tiny personal website hosted on Netlify would cost between $2500 and $5800 to migrate.
rorylawless··on Palantir has no place in UK public services
No, not at all. The surveillance state nonsense is overplayed online.
rorylawless··on Palantir has no place in UK public services
The sales problem being there isn't anything viable to compete with the established players. Europe has the capability, even without immigration from the US, it just needs a kick to make good enough products.
rorylawless··on American importers and consumers bear the cost of 2025 tariffs: analysis
Yes, however the next paragraph outlines why it wasn’t surprising to other observers. Summarized, low competition and structural constraints.
rorylawless··on Digital Euro 'only defence' against deepening US control of money

rorylawless··on ‘Fuck you, make me’ without saying the words
Illegality is a floor, not a ceiling. It is justified to adhere to and promote a morality that sets higher standards than the law, including taking the view that creating and distributing indecent images of people should be prohibited.
rorylawless··on ICE Is Going on a Surveillance Shopping Spree
I fear we are at the point where descendants of ICE employees will be embarrassed to acknowledge the relation.
rorylawless··on Show HN: I visualized the entire history of Citi Bike in the browser
This is awesome. I had no idea Lyft publishes ride data, time to explore the DC version!
rorylawless··on Total monthly number of StackOverflow questions over time
The downward trend seems to start ~2017, and was interrupted by a spike during the early months of COVID-19. I'd be interested to know what drove that jump, perhaps people were less hesitant to post when they were working from home?
rorylawless··on iOS allows alternative browser engines in Japan
My prior POV was that Apple would jettison the feature globally, but the discussion elsewhere in this thread suggests that salami slicing at the software-level is a cost larger companies are willing to bear.
rorylawless··on iOS allows alternative browser engines in Japan
My hope for laws such as the ones Japan and the EU enacted was that companies would see the writing on the wall and change their practices worldwide, if only for cost reasons (it presumably being more expensive to maintain multiple sets of rules.) However, these companies are now so large that they can choose to absorb any inefficiencies on a country-by-country basis.
rorylawless··on European Majority favours more social media regulation
What collective term would you use to describe the parties referenced in the poll?
rorylawless··on Show HN: Minimalist editor that lives in browser, stores everything in the URL

rorylawless··on Britain Just Had Its Sunniest Year on Record
I was braced for more doom and gloom, so I’m pleasantly surprised that one explanation is reduced pollution.
rorylawless··on Thomas Piketty: 'The reality is the US is losing control of the world'

rorylawless··on If AI replaces workers, should it also pay taxes?
I'm not so sure this argument is valid. The invention of the wheel barrow created new jobs in wheel barrow manufacturing and distribution. On the other hand, the promise/threat of AI seems to be the complete displacement of humans in many industries without creating alternative employment for the vast majority.
rorylawless··on Rubio stages font coup: Times New Roman ousts Calibri
This is approaching Saparmurat Niyazov levels of weirdness.
rorylawless··on A $20 drug in Europe requires a prescription and $800 in the U.S.
You can get larger packs of painkillers OTC by speaking with a pharmacist (OTC in the literal sense) or ordering online. For example, Boots sells a 96 count 400mg ibuprofen.

rorylawless··on Can Dutch universities do without Microsoft?
If Universities are anything like other large public/public-adjacent organizations, the bulk of the in-house IT department was long since replaced by Microsoft resellers posing as IT. It’s insidious.
rorylawless··on Amazon Leo
Fascinating that they came up with 14 questions and none of them addressed the price of the service.
rorylawless··on Work after work: Notes from an unemployed new grad watching the job market break
It seems he graduated early this year so hasn't been in the market for too long. A few months out of work is a soul destroying experience, however, it can get worse, unfortunately.
rorylawless··on Ask HN: How would you set up a child’s first Linux computer?
The average person in the real world is more likely to encounter documents made in Office, that would be a major barrier to adoption.
rorylawless··on $1T in tech stocks sold off as market grows skeptical of AI
It seems like AI companies have grown skeptical too. The recent spate of browser releases and OpenAI launching a social network suggests to me that they’ve hit a dead end for now and are falling back on tried and true methods of monetizing.
rorylawless··on ICE and the Smartphone Panopticon
And people should have the technology to monitor this kind of overreach.
rorylawless··on I, Sharpie
This is a nice allegory that hits on a few of the key tensions we're seeing at the moment.

The social and economic order is in constant flux, however, there has been tendency to totalize one preference over the alternatives. The abuse of the "invisible hand" metaphor is one way we see this, being used, as it is, to wave away the 50-year trend of increasing selfishness, moving away from seeing the economy as a potential welfare maximizing technology.

We're in a period in which the massive transfer of wealth to a few people is accepted as inevitable and should be pursued at any and all costs. The original post highlights that (individual and collective) human agency remains, people can make the choice to do things differently.

rorylawless··on French ex-president Sarkozy begins jail sentence
Punishment and rehabilitation aren’t mutually exclusive. Arguably, the punishment aspect is served by the removal of freedoms that being locked in prison entails. Rehabilitation can be any number of things that the prisoner does while in prison.
rorylawless··on Ofcom fines 4chan £20K and counting for violating UK's Online Safety Act
Presumably the "big names" are able to (or have already) implemented the requirements under the law and have an economic and reputational incentive to comply.
