roody15··on Google is turning Chrome OS into Android to compete with the iPad
Agree. The simplicity of chromeOS has made it a perfect fit for schools. A full Android based desktop could be problematic in the educational space.

In a nutshell schools benefit from a a simple, restrictive, laptop device that runs the web well.

roody15··on Ozempic linked to lower Alzheimer's risk in people with Type 2 diabetes
Hmm not quite. The bigger issue at hand is the large group of metabolic disorders linked to our unhealthy eating habits Alzheimer’s is now often referred to as Type 3 diabetes.

This drug in a nutshell partially paralyzes the stomach and upper intestine causing food to move through slowly. This has the effect of reducing food cravings as you literally stay full longer.

However slowing down the stomach muscles has many risks and many side effects.

Yes this drug is great for people who have struggled with weight loss and may not realistically be in a position to work on diet and exercise.

However this drug is not a substitute for the larger issue at hand. Many (possibly most) Americans are not living healthy lives in terms of mind, body (maybe spirit).

Improving physical activity leveled.. learning to eat less and to eat healthy should be a national priority. If anything the US government lack of addressing the elephant in the room and the underlying cause of many of these metabolic orders should outrage all Americans.

Just my two cents

roody15··on OpenAI to become for-profit company
Wait.. Sam Altman also owns (or did own) ycombinator?
roody15··on Sony announces PS5 Pro, a $700 graphics workhorse available Nov. 7
No disc drive... lame. pass.
roody15··on Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger's Dream Job Takes a Nightmarish Turn
With the latest snafu of defective 13/14th gen intel CPU’s things are not looking good. So far Intel has not handled this well and likely looking at major class action lawsuits.
roody15··on Moderna wins $176M to develop bird flu vaccine amid outbreak
Amid outbreak?

“ The U.S. has documented three cases of humans with bird flu in 2024 “

roody15··on Modern-day spying: sometimes old technology is more secure
This article makes me think of an intercom system I maintain at one of our buildings. The fact that it is offline and each location is physically wired = it’s safe and secure. Another school district about 80 miles away had their systems hacked including phones, cameras and intercom .. as they were all meter and “cloud” based.

Just makes me rethink does everything thing need internet access. Sometimes perhaps simple safe and secure may fit better. Kind of off topic of this article but the concept just kind of got me thinking out loud.

roody15··on Testing Generative AI for Circuit Board Design
It makes me think of the saying “a jack of all trades a master of none”.

I cannot help but think there are some similarities between large model generative AI and human reasoning abilities.

For example if I ask a physician with a really high IQ some general questions about say anything like fixing shocks on my mini van … he may have some better ideas than me.

However he may be wrong since he specialized in medicine, although he may have provided some good overall info.

Let’s take a lower IQ mechanic who has worked as a mechanic for 15 years. Despite this human having less IQ, less overall knowledge on general topics … he gives a much better answer of fixing my shocks.

So with LLM AI fine tuning looks to be key as it is with human beings. Large data sets that are filtered / summarized with specific fields as the focus.

roody15··on Internet Archive forced to remove 500k books after publishers' court win
I hope they do a data dump or leak of the archive before they comply. It’s a shame to lose so many actually scanned hardcover books.
roody15··on Expert Warns That Long Covid May Eventually Affect Most Americans
No words for how bad this article is. It is essentially the sky is falling and we need to immediately go back to strict lockdown procedures, increase vaccination rates and shut down dissenting voices.

Just nonsense. The people have spoken and do not want to go back to 2020/21. They are willing to take the risk to live more active lives in contact with other people.

If you want to tackle the real health elephant in the room just take a look at morbid obesity rates, quality of life and risks associated with.

roody15··on Microsoft to delay release of Recall AI feature on security concerns
Explain the personal utility here... Ohh I cannot find that one website I visited but I know I had found it a couple weeks back? Really. The personal utility use case looks pretty weak IMO.
roody15··on The 'Dead Internet Theory'
“ but alas they did not work out the full dynamics of human nature (seeking short term profit, influence and control) ”

Has anyone worked out this … in terms of governance or anyone organized grouping of humans?

roody15··on Security researcher discovers Microsoft's Recall tool is woefully insecure
You had trust in Microsoft? The Microsoft Office team still seems somewhat legit but the windows division has been garbage for years.
roody15··on Not an iPad Pro Review: Why iPadOS Still Doesn't Get the Basics Right
It is a restricted consumer device. Basic computer functionality can often only be added with pay as you go subscription “apps” making the device a parody of a personal computer.

iPad has gotten better compared to the early days but still remains a device designed around consuming content. It is great at consuming content, books, movies, comics, reading headlines .. etc.

My two cents.

roody15··on AlphaFold 3 predicts the structure and interactions of life's molecules
I wonder in the not too distant future if these AI predictions could be explained back into “humanized” understanding. Much like ChatGPT can simplify complex topics … cold the model in the future provide feedback to researchers why it is making this prediction?
roody15··on BlackHole: macOS Audio Loopback Driver
This is an awesome program highly recommend. Used to be called Soundflower back in the day but BlackHole works better and works with new M series Mac’s. Awesome!
roody15··on As private equity dominates wheelchair market, users wait months for repairs
Private Equity = we have a bunch of money and use it to control markets and politics.

Almost a new form of feudalism.

Get back to work IT surfs while we continue to extract wealth from your labor.

roody15··on IT Support Thanks You
Fun with suno.com .. attach to end of IT support emails to keep good vibes flowing.
roody15··on UK's Investigatory Powers Bill to become law despite tech world opposition
The older I get the more I see these bills and trends are really based on economics. Politics is more a less a controlled narrative to maintain this style of wealth distribution.

The wealthy elite class draws most of its income by exploiting labor. This is done in a variety of ways but essentially most UK Billionaires make their money in private equity (over half.. same in US)... which really means they don't actually do much real labor.

Instead they need to extract wealth which often means creating a system where people's labor is exploited. To keep this system in check a control of the narrative is required so you can keep a lower class of workers "occupied" so they don't wise up to the reality of the situation.

One common theme is fear.. war on terror, axis of evil states.. some sort of plague..Y2K.. you can probably pull up many themes from the past.

The other theme is divide by culture.... you see this today with gender issues.. gay rights, etc. For example in most modern western states... the vast majority of citizens don't really care if people are gay .. they may or may not approve personally but honestly don't mind what people do with their private lives etc... So the narrative has to flipped and made more extreme ..it doesn't matter the issue it has to something that gets people riled up enough that they don't have much mental or emotion energy left to focus on the small group that is exploiting their labor. (So gender issue has to get extreme to the point where we talk about surgical altering children for example)

Notice both parties... somehow keep migrants flowing into Europe (and US).. Almost like pressure needs to be kept on keeping wages low.

In the US the federal reserve openly states this as the goal ..(https://canadiandimension.com/articles/view/us-federal-reser...). Little coverage is given to this and instead a strange spin is attached on how somehow the worker class will actually benefit by being paid less.

This is the same with survelliance bills. We must keep an eye on the worker class to make sure they don't organize and wise up to the reality of their situation.

My two cents

roody15··on Work begins on a $12B high-speed rail line between Las Vegas and Los Angeles
Yes because you assume the final cost will be 12 billion and not 20 billion.

Another real possibility is the project starts and gets engineering plans developed certified and on the shelf and 2 billion is spent getting things going… only to run into a snag and never get completed.

(Google the high speed rail line from Iowa City to Chicago .. that was also fully funded .. and still 10 years later not a single mile of rail has been laid)

roody15··on Biden signs TikTok bill into law, starting clock for ByteDance to divest
Hmm not sure I agree. It can be helpful to have access to social media that contains perspectives outside of the control of the country you live in. Sure will it be slanted or even outright propaganda ? Yes but this is still okay as we can teach people to critically think and make their own decisions. The idea that our “government” will curate content and sanctify what is true is simply dystopian.

Citizen these social media sites and these news sources are safe. We have curated this list for your safety and that of the community at large.

Geez things have gotten bad in a hurry :(

roody15··on Work begins on a $12B high-speed rail line between Las Vegas and Los Angeles
The fact that this costs 12billion sums up a lot of what’s wrong in the US.

Let’s be honest the project will take longer than expected and end up costing more than 12billion.

roody15··on 'Expensive' Streaming Services Are a Key Reason for Americans to 'Pirate'
Streaming services are too pricey and the addition to an ad tier model has pushed me back into limited piracy. Whether it’s Netflix asking if I want to register this device or if I am traveling , to max streaming and ad for its own service I already pay before each show … old school Kodi loaded up is more and more appealing.
roody15··on Apple has reportedly acquired Datakalab
Apple Vision Pro in its current state almost looks like a parody of future tech. Heavy.. bulky … limited battery… limited peripheral vision. Just watch YouTube videos of people using the device. So far version 1.0 is a swing and a miss in my book.
roody15··on Macs to Get AI-Focused M4 Chips Starting in Late 2024
Was looking at purchasing a PC laptop for a staff member today and was surprised just how much better Apple products are in the current M generation of devices. Better screens, no fans, better battery, better performance … surprising there is not much competition. If you take a Dell XPS and add OLED screen and higher resolutions … quickly find your self near $2,000 with a device that still has less battery life, runs hotter, and although may match or exceed raw numeric performance … is still arguably not as versatile or as good a machine.
roody15··on AI-generated pornography will disrupt the adult content industry
Interesting how porn seems to run with technologically 2-3 years ahead of other “industries”. This is nice if this leads to less exploitation of humans … bad if this leads to more social isolation / depression.
roody15··on Surprising public health benefit of unemployment?
Just toss in “obesity”. Greatest health crisis in the last 50 years is undeniably rising obesity levels…

roody15··on Apple alerts users in 92 nations to mercenary spyware attacks
Can confirm just got back from Barcelona on an Iberia flight. Evonomy on this flight was hands down better than any flight I have taken in the US. Food, service, even baggage policy was just simply a better experience. Honestly my mind was blown / food multiple meals included in price of economy seat. Just less nickel and diming and overall better experience,
roody15··on SFMTA's train system running on floppy disks; city fears 'catastrophic failure'
I am an elected official (12 years and elected six times in Illinois) unfortunately seeing this process work over 12 years is discouraging. For example President Obama allocated 8 billion dollars for high sped passenger rail service improvements. By 2017 almost 2 billion of this money had been spent on railroad improvements / railroad crossings and line inspections. Fast forward to 2024 no high speed rails have actually been built. For example Chicago Illinois was to get a line from Iowa City to Quad Cities to Chicago (straight line). This project was fully funded at one point but Iowa and Illinois had (still have) a disagreement on bridge repairs connecting the states.

Now Governor Pritzer has authorized a new high speed rail commission to try and get this project going again.

In a nutshell .. Rail project between Iowa City and Chicago was fully funded as of 2016… all that actually happened is some rail road crossing were improved.. lines were inspected and no actual new lines constructed. Instead 1 out of the 2 billion was spend on “engineering” costs and compliance paperwork … which now has expired and need to be redone if the project is to be completed.

The amount of money spent on compliance paperwork and “engineering” is staggering. Many six figure salaries depend on slightly altering existing engineered projects to meet compliance requirements for projects that are never built. From waste treatment upgrades, water treatment, road improvement, traffic studies, on and on. The amount of money spent on services that are not finished or lead to an actual project is absolutely staggering … entire industries depend on this inefficiency and lobby effectively to keep things “obtuse”.

roody15··on The $10k BYD Seagull EV is scaring the U.S. auto industry
Price point is a major factor in EV adoption. If the United States is truly looking for increased market share of EV’s then we need a lower end market.

The US market is geared too much towards “luxury” and “rent” based features and subscriptions. All which maximize profit for manufactures. If the US is serious about EV adoption then we need to compete and offer better range of prices. My two cents .
