roody15··on Google will allow only apps from verified developers to be installed on Android
Google (and Apple) want to turn the idea of a phone and computer into that of a gaming console. You use the device according to how they design it, apps are rented, the whole ecosystem is around controlling the experience and maximizing revenue from sites and services. Microsoft seems to be moving in this direction as well (but cannot quite execute for a variety of reasons.. legacy support being one)

Linux really is the only way to have an experience where the computer is your device to do what you want to do with it.

roody15··on U.S. government takes 10% stake in Intel
The question is can a US purchase help Intel turn things around? As a corporation Intel has really struggled for over a decade and has trouble with its foundry back even at the 10nm level. Will the US purchase have any impact on Intel reaching competitive levels with TSMC?
roody15··on Open hardware desktop 3D printing is dead?
Reminds me of cellular phones / I hope that one corporation doesn’t lock down the 3d printing industry in a similar way to cell phones.

We really have two types of smartphones Android based and iOS Apple. The patents surrounding wireless radio transmission and cellular connectivity esssentially make it impossible for any competition outside of mega corporations.

The cost is so high that likely only Microsoft could attempt (again) such a move or maybe Amazon or Space X.

“ Extensive Patent Portfolio: Motorola has a large number of patents related to cellular technology, with over 1,900 patent families considered essential to 3G, 4G, and 5G standards, according to Lenovo. Strategic Acquisition: Google's acquisition of Motorola Mobility in 2011 was largely driven by the desire to acquire Motorola's patent portfolio to defend Android. Licensing Agreements: Motorola has entered into cross-licensing agreements with other companies, such as Sharp, to share their respective wireless communication technologies. Standard-Essential Patents (SEPs): Motorola holds SEPs related to mobile phone signal standards, obligating them to license these patents to competitors on fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory terms. Patent Disputes: Motorola has been involved in patent infringement lawsuits, including cases against companies like Hytera and Apple, regarding their cellular technology patents. ”

roody15··on ADHD drug treatment and risk of negative events and outcomes
My experience with ADHD medication now going on over 2 years has been mostly positive.

I am much more effective at getting things done at work and in this regard has been quite positive.

Negative and positive on a personal relationship level. I have much better awareness of conversation dynamics and am more focused and able to listen much better. The downside would be the impact on existing relationships. The medication has an impact on personality and emotional dynamics that have been hard to navigate. With more awareness and focus in existing relationships in some ways has provided insight into unhealthy relationship dynamics and re-negotiating these is not easy.

In short if you change you vibe this has a ripple effect in other areas of your life. My experience at least.

roody15··on California unemployment rises to 5.5%, worst in the U.S. as tech falters
H1B visas are not going to help the situation. The reality is our corporate structure lobbies for legislation that lowers wages through various means and is quite effective at doing it.
roody15··on Streaming services are driving viewers back to piracy
Also offers original programming without weird edits made later. Disney and Netflix seem to have done this quite a bit removing scenes and sometimes entire episodes .
roody15··on The surprise deprecation of GPT-4o for ChatGPT consumers
My personal relationship experience using ChatGPT 4o vs 5 and 5 thinking is interesting.

I have had trouble in a long relationship and much of it centers around communication (2 decade relationship). Long story short it has been in a rocky spot for a couple years.

Using ChatGPT to understand our dynamic and communication patterns has been helpful at least I think as it does seem to pull out communication and behavior patterns I hadn’t noticed (me and her).

Referencing the same chats under ChatGPT 5 it is a much more to the point condensed version of the dynamic.

Using chat gpt 5 thinking was the biggest change. Rather than recap really the dynamic and our experiences it simply gave 2 options.

1. If you want to repair (with boundaries)

2. If you want a trial seperation / space

Pick on and will help with 30 days steps to repair or seperate.

The thinking model is like let’s cut all of the chatter and get to action. What are you going to do and then I can help.

A very stark difference in response but at the same time not necessarily incorrect just much more focused on okay what you going to do now. No more comments like “this must be hard”.. or “I can see this has been tough for you” … or “ you are doing a good job trying to improve things”… etc etc. just more of okay I see the pattern .. you should make a decision and then I can help flesh out an action plan.

roody15··on Ozempic shows anti-aging effects in trial
Reduced calories also associated with anti aging effects ?

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9042193/

Maybe related with Ozempic?

roody15··on ICE is getting unprecedented access to Medicaid data
I find it interesting that outside of the political headlines the surge in deportations remains lower than that during the Obama and Biden administrations.

Not trying to make a political statement here just pointing out oddities between reported data online perception.

Note* this data could be inaccurate ?

“ Deportation Numbers: While arrests have risen sharply, the administration's impact on actual deportation rates is still being assessed. According to the Migration Policy Institute, the Trump administration is on track to deport roughly half a million people this year, which is below the target of one million annually and less than the 685,000 recorded in fiscal year 2024 under President Joe Biden.”

roody15··on Linux Reaches 5% Desktop Market Share in USA
It’s surprising to me it’s not higher. Gaming is excellent on Linux and Windows 11 is simply not good. Just a relative easier distro like Ubuntu is outstanding and learning curve is lower than ever.
roody15··on Ukrainian hackers destroyed the IT infrastructure of Russian drone manufacturer
Ukrainian hackers ….? Hmm
roody15··on Intel CEO says it's "too late" for them to catch competition
Absolutely agree. Here we are in 2025 and intel really doesn’t have an answer for the M1 which came out in 2020. A 600$ M1 MacBook Air has better performance / battery than most 1500$ plus intel laptops that are brand new. It’s honestly kind of sad.
roody15··on DOJ goes after US citizen for developing anti-ICE app
Agree one worrying idea is using rumors to discredit or just put pressure on the individual in question. Can simply monitor the individual and then report any odd behavior to friends, co-workers, etc. The result is the individual has to focus on these issues and will likely seize the behavior. No charges ever even need to be filed, and nothing is illegal on doing this activity.
roody15··on More on Apple's Trust-Eroding 'F1 the Movie' Wallet Ad
“ we overvalue short-term gains (thus we have serious agent-principal and integrity issues),”

Agree and would even make the argument that Chinas rise in some is a response to short term with patience.

China is willing to move mountains and allow western corporations 8-10 years of ridiculous low labor costs and promote incredible profits. They then learn the process and the tech and now companies like TP-link, Huawei, BYD, tencent, and so forth are all legit and make good products. This approach can even be seen in their military. With all the talk of China invading Taiwan… the reality is it just won’t happen. China will patiently build the largest Navy and infiltrate the political landscape of Taiwan until they just peacefully transfer back into the fold.

Not sure what the answer is here but perhaps we could learn something back ?

roody15··on Using the Internet without IPv4 connectivity
Nothing. In the enterprise world the benefits vs the negatives of implanting ipv6 is not there. I manage around 3500 devices, 7 buildings and have 2 ten gig wan connections and one 4 gig wan connection and use NAT along with about 26 public ipv4 addresses.

To this day I have no compelling reason to adopt ipv6. Dual stack setup adds unnecessary traffic and complexity for little advantage.

To this day it is still hard to get assigned a block of static ipv6 addresses, have applied twice and been denied.

So not only is there little upside it is also still hard to even get allocated a block.

https://www.arin.net/resources/guide/ipv6/first_request/

“Step 1: Verify You Qualify If you meet any of the criteria below, you qualify to receive IPv6 address space:

Have an IPv4 assignment from ARIN or one of its predecessors Intend to immediately be IPv6 multi-homed Have 13 end sites (offices, data centers, etc.) within one year Use 2,000 IPv6 addresses within one year Use 200 /64 subnets within one year“

roody15··on New studies offer insight into Lyme disease’s treatment, lingering symptoms
My mother got a tick bite and felt off and the doctor told her she had allergies and sinus infection due to high pollen. Luckily my younger brother is a physician and told her to go back and ask for a Lyme disease test. They said okay but said Lyme disease is really rare and wasn’t necessary. Long story short she was positive but was caught early enough that 30 days Doxy was all she needed.

That same year I was bitten and had a super itchy spot near my private regions. It was crazy itch and made a bullseye rash. I went to a clinic and they said they had never seen the bullseye rash and it was textbook Lyme disease (or one other common tick disease). Same was treated with Doxy and was fine. It’s an strange disease because if caught early super cheap antibiotics work well… but if has spread through your body it can take years to recover and be quite serious!

roody15··on Ask HN: Is there hope for Microsoft 365 support?
Similar experience. I am IT Director at a medium sized school district (3500 students) and our emails were blocked by Microsoft for a few weeks. Our email domain and up address are not on any blacklist and have an excellent reputation. The mail server has been operating for over 15 years. I was able to get unblocked by emailing Microsoft support opening a case and registering our mail server with Microsoft smart network data services.

“ You are receiving this because you have signed up to be a user of Smart Network Data Services, or a Smart Network Data Services user has requested that this email be sent to this address. Smart Network Data Services is a revolutionary Windows Live Mail initiative, designed to allow everyone who owns IP space to contribute to the fight against spam and protect e-mail as a valued communications, productivity and commerce tool. roody15··on Apple's Software Quality Crisis
When you upgrade MacOS 15.3.0 apple automatically enables Apple intelligence and then turns on Apple intelligence reporting (15 min intervals) by default.

You are not prompted or asked to enable.

After disabling Apple Intelligence when you do the next mini update to 15.3.1 Apple intelligence is enabled. Again no prompt and your previous choice to disable is ignored.

This IMO is a bad sign for Apple software quality. Looks like they are moving to more dark user methods seen in Windows 11.

roody15··on GPT-4.5
Interesting times that are changing quickly. It looks like the high end pay model that OpenAI is implementing may not be sustainable. Too many new players are making LLM breakthroughs and OpenAI's lead is shrinking and it may be overvalued.
roody15··on IPv6 Is Hard
In my career I have found IPv6 simply to be unnecessary. Running a network of 7 buildings with approximately 2,300 computers for now almost 2 decades and this is still true.

Setting edge routers to simply drop all ipv6 packets and running only ipv4 works, is simpler, is faster (than dual stack) and easier to troubleshoot.

I don’t have any inheritant issues with IPv6 other than is has failed to make a case for why people like me should bother rolling it out.

roody15··on Musk-led group makes $97B bid for control of OpenAI
This is an odd thread. If a group is able to take control and prevent OpenAI from becoming a for profit corporation would be a welcome development.
roody15··on Cities can cost effectively start their own utilities
I am a city council member in small city (9,000) which owns and operates a municipal electric power plant. We have 4 large diesel generators, two large wind turbines and a few fields of solar panels. It is nice having power on 24/7, if there is an outage we simply fire up a diesel generator and power is restored in just a few minutes. We do have to buy power on the grid but also have times where we sell power back (summer, when people use AC prices go up and our solar panels typically generate excesss and profit) The price of power is almost identical to those outside of the city. Honestly keeping as many derives local really has been a win/ win for our community.
roody15··on Why an increasing belief in alien visitations is a real-world problem
Real-world is an interesting concept in modern society. It reminds me of the ideas we see in the film Paprika (2008).

The internet (and AI) are much like dreams in that they impact our reality. The amount of time people spend looking at feeds on their phones creates thoughts and impacts a persons perception of the “real world”.

Not surprised more people believe in aliens … with these modern devices an odd form of shared (perhaps manipulated) version of reality emerges.

What is really “trending” What is really “news worthy”

What is the top issue affecting the EU or affecting Americans?

What is important?

What am I scared of?

How much of this is the “real world” how much of this is some odd blend of both?

roody15··on Microsoft deletes official Windows 11 CPU/TPM bypass for unsupported PCs
Recently moved to re-imaging many of the PC's that I mangage to Linux and so far has gone way smoother than I would have anticipated. Heavily considering moving two entire PC labs at another building to Linux as well. Not sure what Microsoft is thinking this go around Windows 11 has been a disaster. You essentially have to pay more to get a clean, stripped down version of the OS that is manageable.

Most of my machines are 12th gen Intel and they meet all the requirements for Windows 11. However frequently Win 11 updates have caused annoying boot loops, reset preferences, problems with apps already installed and more.

These are Dell Precision workstations so you would think they would have pretty good compatibility with Microsoft... but alas disappointed is the best word I can use.

roody15··on What the TP-Link Ban in the US Means for You
TP Link “ which dominate approximately 65% of the U.S. router market for small businesses and homes (Allconnect)”

This appear to be more about protecting US market share and less about national security. Netgear/linksys etc cannot compete with price against TP Link.

roody15··on Does current AI represent a dead end?
What I find interesting is current LLM’s are based primarily on written data which is already an abstraction / abbreviation of most observed phenomenon.

What happens when AI starts to send out it own drones or perhaps robots and tries to gather and train based on data it observes itself.

I think we may be closer to this point than we realize… results of AI could get quite interesting once a human level abstraction of knowledge is perhaps reduced.

roody15··on Australia: Kids under 16 to be banned from social media after Senate passes laws
I wonder if we should even call this social media at this point. More like interactive TV 3.0. All the feeds are heavily ad infested and “promoted” content appears from “infliences” .. some people shadow banned while others artificially boosted up your feed.

All designed to maximize your attention but also sway your opinion.

The social part of social media seems to have gone mostly by the wayside.

“Did you see the new dance this one kid did in Texas” like like, hashtag, loved it , repost, etc … not really building much of a social relationship, or perhaps it is and just seems a bit off to us older folks,

roody15··on Windows 10's farewell tour – not AI PCs – set to drive laptop sales in 2025
The AI PC marketing campaign as of now is not good. What exactly is an AI PC?

Many consumers are still uneasy with some AI use and just tagging this label onto a laptop doenst look to be increasing mindshare or moving units.

roody15··on ICC issues warrants for Netanyahu, Gallant, and Hamas officials
What is the point of the ICC? Russia doesn't recognize it, Israel doesn't recognize it and even the United States doesn't recognize it. I am confused at what these warrants even mean.
