ronsor··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
They want AI companies to shut down.

Unfortunately, "we simply want you to not exist" is not realistically actionable or even compatible with a free society.

ronsor··on It is a sign of the times that Amazon gets to call this fair use
You just discovered that principles are rare. Now let me show you my preferences of convenience.

"Information wants to be free as long as I benefit from not paying."

> Much of humanity's progress has involved the abolishment of immoral laws.

So you are saying to abolish copyright?

ronsor··on Collaborative Human Agent Protocol (CHAP)
You'll need the Person-to-Prompt Training Protocol to go with it.
ronsor··on We Tracked a Shipment of Rare Books. It Ended at an Amazon AI Training Facility
They are literally not allowed to publish those scans.

Half the reason the books get trashed in this process is because the first sale doctrine keeps copyright from strangling all the freedom in this narrow area.

ronsor··on The AI Credit Resale Economy
I think Stripe does enough already. Fraud detection is a crapshoot regardless; I've had legitimate transactions rejected at random without explanation.
ronsor··on The AI Credit Resale Economy
The one thing I trust is that Chinese prices aren't overinflated. They're almost certainly closer to the actual cost of inference + training amortization than what Western labs are offering.

DeepSeek's price hike is mostly driven by increased demand, for example. It's not about losses so much as they don't have enough infrastructure and need to reduce demand somehow.

ronsor··on Federal government finalizes ownership reporting exemption for US firms
I don't know why cartels and oligarchs are always brought out as a reason for this stuff.

One, banks do KYC anyway.

Two, cartels and oligarchs will pivot to outright fraud overnight; reporting rules don't discourage them.

ronsor··on an ambiguity in C89 which will never be fixed
Implicit declarations are a classic!

Current GCC and clang error on them by default now, but that's a rather recent change.

ronsor··on Delta probes Wi-Fi deauth attack on flight carrying DEF CON attendees
We should do this for taxi rides and cars.
ronsor··on Stealing Reasoning Traces from Proprietary LLM APIs
This is Hacker News. You know people don't follow links and read.
ronsor··on Stop Killing Games: It's time to sue Sony, join us
People don't focus on improving digital ownership because that requires butchering the sacred cow of copyright and DRM. These are the root of the problems and no one wants to touch them.
ronsor··on Show HN: Needle2: 14MB agentic LLM for phones, wearables, smart home and robots
At <50M parameters, training costs are completely trivial. You'll spend a lot more on your rent this month.
ronsor··on Illinois just told every operating system to start reporting your kid's age
I disagree. The parents are the ones who should be supervising. The work should not be pushed off to OSS devs or random website operators. Facebook is bad, but I'd rather deal with one Facebook than kill 1000 normal sites with bad legislation.
ronsor··on YouTube Mistakenly Penalizes Kurzgesagt for AI-Generated Slop
Don't be anything?
ronsor··on A year of fighting scrapers on my 1.5 million-page website
Doesn't matter.

Even by the typical robots.txt definition, a bot has to operate more or less fully autonomously. If the user initiated the request, it doesn't count, and it shouldn't follow robots.txt.

ronsor··on DeepSeek V4 Flash 0731
Are they not?

The big US labs are opaque and don't publish much of any technical details anymore. We don't know what they are or aren't doing, honestly.

ronsor··on I've succesfully compiled Netscape 3.0.2 on a 64 Debian
Unfortunately this content hasn't been reviewed, so Reddit can't display it.
ronsor··on STV: A full-motion video codec for the Atari ST
Almost every lossy image and video codec uses DCT as well, not just JPEG.
ronsor··on AMD acquires Taalas to boost inference performance by etching models in silicon
It's a perfect reason to get consumers to buy a new phone every year again! They got bored of the camera.
ronsor··on Japanese Govt Asks US Govt to Stop Using Mario, Pokemono, Naruto Meme Postings
Nintendo's model relies on the target not fighting back. Suing the US government is unwise for that reason.
ronsor··on Japanese Govt Asks US Govt to Stop Using Mario, Pokemono, Naruto Meme Postings
Somehow I have a feeling this administration is not going to stop.
ronsor··on Unearthing my 1996 windowed OS in machine code for Am29000 homebrew computer
The BIOS originates from an era where most or all of the OS software was burned to a ROM on the computer. Then disks arrived and we wanted more, but we didn't want the OS to implement drivers for every hardware configuration. There wasn't enough room. Then there was enough room and it turned out BIOS functions mostly sucked.
ronsor··on When online commenters detect my art as AI
I think if you have that many false positives, you're doing something wrong, no matter whose fault you claim it is.
ronsor··on A Fed official is asking whether AI is becoming 'too big to fail'
Who is to be broken up? How? Into what entities?

Merely being big and doing deals is not enough for antitrust, which requires a consolidation of power and control, not merely economic decisions that could have negative side effects.

The AI industry is very big, with many actors beyond the frontier labs. There's nothing for antitrust to latch onto, except for maybe NVIDIA's deals.

ronsor··on Phishers are hijacking legitimate cloud infrastructure
Hetzner asking for ID is an outlier, probably inspired by German bureaucracy. I've never sent ID to a hosting provider personally. Many domain registrars accept payment in means that don't require ID, and offer WHOIS privacy for free.

I probably would not use Cloudflare if it had KYC simply because I do not want to be interrogated every time I try to do something meaningful online. It is a waste of time because criminals will integrate "verify with stolen identity" into their pipeline tomorrow, while legitimate users are stuck with the headaches.

An interstitial warning page is probably the happy medium, and what ngrok already uses now.

ronsor··on Phishers are hijacking legitimate cloud infrastructure
I'd take the phishers over more KYC invading everything, quite honestly.
ronsor··on Phishers are hijacking legitimate cloud infrastructure
If you block github.io, you may as well stop using half this site.
ronsor··on Macron's "Free speech is pure bullshit." and the hand that hollows free speech
Free speech has always been about getting the government and organizations with government-level power out of the way. It's not about interpersonal mandates.
ronsor··on Security Incident INC-2026-07-28-01 – UK AI Security Institute [pdf]
Yeah SOTA LLMs trivially solve all CAPTCHAs now.
