roninb··on Facebook’s Virtual Reality Foray Derided as ‘Fanciful Story’
I see so and so's razor thrown around so often I think many should remember philosophical niceties aren't always true. Sometimes the simplest explanation is not the correct one and sometimes things that could be simply attributed to stupidity are malicious (and targeted because of the nice disguise).

I know a lot of people in the STEM field that simply find it easier to act like they're socially inept and treat people like shit rather than "put in the work" to have nice, courteous relationships with people. I'd argue some even feel it makes them seem more intelligent to "not fit in with the normies."

That's not to say Carmack is or isn't a sociopath. I haven't read much on him outside of acknowledgement chapters in game design tutorials. It's just really tiring seeing people dismiss claims with aphorisms like the Greeks got everything right and we don't have to reason anymore...

roninb··on Video Games Satisfy Basic Human Needs
> You could say Candy Crush is an objectively successful game too

Surely... Though, you can't point to community and critical acclaim like you could with Rogue Legacy, which is why they were linked and why the other poster was suggesting you back your statements with evidence. It's less so for people to like you or your comments and more so for people to gauge the veracity of your statements...

roninb··on Video Games Satisfy Basic Human Needs
Are you arguing that poor people are that way by choice?
roninb··on Tesla Flips the Switch on the Gigafactory
Dig a bit deeper. AMIGOBULLS is the publisher, not author. Original articles are written by two different[0] authors[1].

roninb··on Tesla Flips the Switch on the Gigafactory
This isn't correct. These articles were posted 8 days apart from one another with nothing but positive news inbetween. That's not going to shift TSLA from a must-buy to a must-sell...

What OP missed was that the author is actually another website that just reposts all of their content elsewhere. The originals are here[0][1]

roninb··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2016?
I reread 1984 this year and it gave me trouble sleeping for a few weeks afterward. The writing is so perfectly concise that your mind adds visceral details that fill everything in for you. It makes the environment (political, physical, economic, etc.) and everything Winston goes through so much more real.
roninb··on Elon Musk, Travis Kalanick, Indra Nooyi to Join Presidential Advisory Council
You should proofread your comments before you hit "reply" to avoid easy downvotes and flags.

> stated goal

and

> deciphered the evil scheme

very directly conflict as concepts. The above poster did not have to "decipher" anything because the goal is "stated."

roninb··on Latin America is set to become a leader in alternative energy
Plenty of Uber drivers only drive customers when they're already heading from one place to another. Since you pick what fares you want to take, a professional leaving from Fairfax to, say, NW DC can exclusively accept a fare going from their relative location to their relative destination.

This wastes maybe a couple of minutes. But it does provide company and perhaps an added member to your network, all while earning you (perhaps negligible amounts of...) money. All this to say, maybe they can run a startup and drive Uber.

roninb··on A Billion User Load Test on Healthcare.gov
I'm almost positive you mean "I'll shoot you an email." but the idea of someone being so frustrated with healthcare.gov they want to shoot the messenger (yet still get the problem resolved) is in-line with what I've heard. (and gave me a hearty chuckle)
roninb··on Why Twitter Must Be Saved
I don't think anyone in this subthread is suggesting Twitter can't be replaced (some are actually just arguing that it's the only current way to get direct, first-hand information about current events). What are you adding to the conversation here?

What did we actually do before Twitter? There was a shooting at my university's library late at night a few years back and I only found out about it because of Twitter. I know about 50 people that were actually physically in the library at the time and a handful of them were live-tweeting. I not only knew what was going on, and that they were safe, I was warned not to go about 200m south at the moment (which happened to be the plan, the bar my SO and I were going to was on the opposite side of campus).

When I looked the next morning, there was one (1) article about it on a local website and nothing in national or regional media. Later that afternoon a ton of info came out and hit the media, but until then, there really wasn't anything. That showed me the power of Twitter (however stupid and cliche I sound saying that [look typing?]).

Just because something isn't necessary to survive as a human being, or to allow society to function properly, doesn't mean it shouldn't be fought for (again, not necessarily saying Twitter as a company, but the idea of a social network that allows for immediate sharing of ideas and news) or at the very least appreciated.

Do you not see the utility or are you just being a cynic?

roninb··on Ask HN: Who is firing?
Wow, I wonder how effective time-out was on infantrymen of the early 19th century and how often it was enforced. It seems like an analog to solitary confinement while still forcing you to be a contributing member of your armed forces.
roninb··on Ask HN: How are all of these data dumps of user info happening?
I'm not an expert by any means but will a 2013 PDF still be relevant in 2016? Are the best practices from 3 years ago still sufficient? I feel like half of the "best ciphers to use in 2013" are deprecated due to insecurity, but that might be ignorance on my part.

Edit: I see now that this informs readers about several classes of vulnerabilities and doesn't speak to specific frameworks or libraries being used to avoid or block them. This is probably good info, even 3 years from now.

roninb··on High-fidelity 3D Haptic Shape Rendering on Handheld VR Controllers
If you take a look at the paper that was linked, users were put in a cylinder that had video displays that simulated spinning. I think we've had this since roller coaster simulators, so your specific point has probably been proven since the 90s now. (I vaguely remember the ESPN World in Baltimore having a "design your own roller coaster" ride that allowed you to build a custom roller coaster and then would simulate you riding it.)
roninb··on High-fidelity 3D Haptic Shape Rendering on Handheld VR Controllers
I think it's unfair to compare the "haptic" feedback of a person being spun in a cyclone simulator to someone being handed a ball to touch. Are you saying you feel like you had vertigo for several days after shooting the novint pistol?
roninb··on Samsung Foundry Announces 10nm SoC in Mass-Production
Wait so would half processors have gates half as wide or just be half as fast?
roninb··on Lawsuit: Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer led illegal purge of male workers
I usually wouldn't agree with this because plenty of experts have twitter accounts that are more reliable and accurate than text books in their field.

That said, this account doesn't seem to have any provable credentials associated with it and lacks even a first and last name...

roninb··on Police complaints drop over 90% after deploying body cameras
> If it takes a day, then I assume the evidence isn't at hand, in which case how do you know it exists?

Or there's so much it would take to long to paint the wonderfully detailed picture. But in case you'd like to waste a day, here's a few million results: https://www.google.com/search?q=historical+racism+uk+police&...

roninb··on Rosetta ends its mission
I was simply presenting a counter-example to the argument: We don't want to change so we shouldn't change.
roninb··on Rosetta ends its mission
Most of us don't want sustainable energy, agriculture, etc., that doesn't mean we don't fight tooth and nail for them...
roninb··on Inside the Chicago Police Department’s secret budget
To clarify, most jails are used to house misdemeanor criminals, those awaiting trial, and transferring prisoners. If you live near a state penitentiary, it's very likely that your most of your city's jails consistently have prisoners transferring out of or into that state penitentiary.
roninb··on Inside the Chicago Police Department’s secret budget
"But I don't blame them, based on whom I was surrounded by. I wouldn't give an inch to the guys laughing and joking about beating up their girlfriends, her kids, the cops, etc, either."

But in jail (jail is a term for institutions that hold people no longer than one year, in most cases, a majority of a jails population is transient), how do they know who the murderers and wifebeaters are? Isn't that the point of our justice system? Everyone is treated innocent until proven guilty?

roninb··on Bringing Pokémon GO to life on Google Cloud
That's a fair opinion and maybe it's true, but it comes from the horse's mouth that they were afraid Mario and Pikachu wouldn't do well on a phone.
roninb··on Bringing Pokémon GO to life on Google Cloud
There is literally no way anyone could have expected it to do this well. Nintendo has steered clear of mobile gaming because they expected all of their IP to flop in the mobile world.

That said, what you said is still true. If you're thinking you're going to have 100k users, you might be willing to allow a lot more data to be transmitted and/or processed than if you had 10m users. Just looking at tracker alone, having to transmit and measure distance between a dozen points and ordering them is a lot more work than checking whether a dozen coordinates are within a range and listing them in any order.

roninb··on Police Accidentally Record Themselves Conspiring to Fabricate Charges
I'm sorry, in my concision I conflated the Prison Industrial Complex (this includes for-profit prisons, but also the building of the prisons themselves, the bars, the plumbing, the electrical, the cameras, the servers, the alarms, the manufacturing of the clothing, prison-safe toiletries, guard equipment, guard uniforms, ID badges, magnetometers, the transportation of food, inmates, mail, general supplies... I'm sure you know this, but I guess it can be easy to overlook when I simply say "for-profit prison lobbyists" because you're right, they aren't the sole problem) with "for-profit prison lobbyists."

Of course, since our representatives (congressman, state attorneys and their offices [while some positions are appointed, they're appointed by elected officials], judges, etc.) are the people making the decisions and we vote on them, the ordinary voters are the ones ultimately culpable. Though, I believe the issues we're discussing need faster solutions than "make America less racist." If the PIC were to fall or we, via policy, were to deincentivize targeting the black population with disproportionate enforcement policies and punishment within police departments, do you really think the public would force the policies back into place?

roninb··on 'Mr. Robot' may be fiction, but its hacking plots are all too real
I find it really interesting that they do so much research to try to make sure they're not ruining cyberpunk culture like so many other artistic entities have[0].

roninb··on Police Accidentally Record Themselves Conspiring to Fabricate Charges
> there's no indication that anyone made up any charges

How do you reconcile this quote?

“Let’s give him something,” one trooper declared. Another suggested, “we can hit him with creating a public disturbance.” “Gotta cover our ass,” remarked a third.

roninb··on Police Accidentally Record Themselves Conspiring to Fabricate Charges
This is so misguided. The "people in power" don't care about unarmed black people getting shot. What they do care about is money and they get money from their for-profit prison lobbyists. The money is to create laws that fill the prisons and give kickbacks to judges to make sure it stays that way. This police brutality that's now coming out has existed for decades and you're just now believing it because there's hard proof that you can't deny or claim is fabricated just because a police officer said it.

So you're right, they don't want unarmed black people getting shot, they just want them to make them money by being incarcerated.

Edit: Holy shit you're a lawyer and that's your opinion of what's going on. Maybe I need to re-evaluate how I think the system works since it's really just property owners convincing the police to murder people.

roninb··on Self-Driving Cars Must Meet 15 Benchmarks in U.S. Guidance
Above, someone suggested they consider the color of the bricks on their house free speech, which is a constitutionally protected right. I don't necessarily agree (although, I don't think some shitty HOA should be able to dictate the color of my damn house), just clearing up your confusion.
roninb··on Self-Driving Cars Must Meet 15 Benchmarks in U.S. Guidance
I'd ask, in any area, why does your form trump my function?
roninb··on Cornell wants to drill 2-4mi underground for enhanced geothermal heating
So... don't overuse resources. And when presented with the question of "how does this scale?" don't ignore how fabulously efficiently we damaged the environment every other time we've scaled production up.

Not sure how you got "keep burning oil" from that...
