roncohen··on Show HN: Go HTTP Request Router Benchmark
Would be great to see a benchmark of how much time is actually spent in routing compared to all the other disciplines involved in responding to a HTTP request. For any interesting application, I suspect routing will be the least of your troubles in regards to performance.

Had been looking for the source of that Werner quote for a while. Thanks Mathias!

Did anyone actually care to see if that data can be read back? :)

roncohen··on Hstore development for 9.4 release
Fantastic!

No mention of arrays in the post, but in the slides: you can use {1, 2} syntax for arrays and hstore now eats it \o/

roncohen··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2013)
Opbeat - Copenhagen, Denmark

* Developer: We're looking for engineers with a keen sense of quality and experience in building modern web-based platforms.

* Designer: We're looking for a great web designer with focus on functionality and UX. SaaS experience is a big plus.

Our goto language is Python, but are we're also in to Ruby, Go seasoned with PostgreSQL and Cassandra.

roncohen··on EC2, RDS, and Elastic Load Balancing issues
AWS knows which AZ is affected and they permutate them so AZ-A can be different for different people, but why can't they tell me which one is affected (from my perspective) when I'm logged into the console?

"Availability Zone Status" shows all green.

roncohen··on Erlang at Basho, Five Years Later
I do believe that Erlang is the right tool for the job when you're building a distributed database, especially for the distribution part. For a company like Basho it's understandably a good investment to take expert distributed systems/database engineers and let them take their time learning Erlang.

If, however, you, like most of us, are not building a distributed database, think carefully before you choose Erlang, especially if you're in a startup.

Most startups don't have a distributed database as their core technology, and for many startups, it's important that developers can push production code from day one.

roncohen··on PostgreSQL needs a new load balancer
We ditched PgPool for PgBouncer for connection pooling from our webservers. PgPool tries to do way to much, and the documentation is horrible. PGBouncer been rock solid compared to PgPool.

I'd love for PgBouncer to poll the servers it's connected to and automatically talk to the master, so in case of master failure I would only have to promote a new master (and STONITH) and PgBouncer would auto-failover to the new master.

roncohen··on A Proposal: Renaming Backend/Frontend to Application/UI Developers
UI is an extremely important part of applications. In that sense, frontend developers are building the application as much as backenders.

Also, UI seems to exclude UX, which is typically also something frontend developers do.

roncohen··on Goodbye, feedback button
We're doing the same thing on our docs pages - it's really a good way to figure out places where you need to improve.

And I hope they publish it as a client-side library as the article hints at. We needed a solutions like this recently, but had to write our own that connects to our Zendesk.

I was surprised that I found none of the customer support services that support this kind of simple feedback. In general, customer support tools need to up their game regarding client-side integration.

roncohen··on How I develop Django projects
Thank you for this. Personally I use Sublime and it does a lot of the things the article mentions, but I will take a look at PyCharm.

We use vagrant and salt stack to maintain a consistent development environment across developers as well as our production environment. It works very well, and gets new developers going in no time. I'll write a blog post about this on the Opbeat blog sometime.

roncohen··on Life beyond the framework
Definitely think he's onto something. I've dealt with my share of jQuery developers.
roncohen··on I don’t call myself an “entrepreneur”
When I tell people what I do, they ask me if I do it because I couldn't get a real job.

Also, I can't help but think Zuckerberg's sister's reality show is a kind of meta/ironic commentary against the hipness of being an entrepreneur.

roncohen··on Building a MongoDB Clone in Postgres
If you just need a simple key/value, a good way to go is HSTORE in PostgreSQL. It allows only string key/values, and not complex structures. Use the JSON datatype if you need lists, nested objects etc.

With HSTORE you get indexes on keys.
