romland··on Ask HN: Please review my weekend project: a dating website for dogs
but breeders might find it useful in that sense

I think you underestimate how breeders work. They have a huge network in place and in most countries there are national organizations aimed at "dogs finding love". :) You know, pedigree and all that jazz. There may be a market for this, but to cater to it you'd have to be much less cute and more professional.

And while on the topic of actually getting offspring from this "love", it might not be such a good idea to have any random Joe off the street get the idea to have "ooooh puppies!" and then down the line realize that having eight of them at eight weeks old is ... actually quite the job (and at this point things get nasty).

Add to that that some dogs just should not breed due to various weaknesses, excessive inbreeding in the past yada yada.

That was a tangent, but to respond to poster: dogs/owners running around having a playmate for a few hours, great. :)

romland··on So hard to have a date: js calendars review. New jquery calendar-picker
Why, if I may ask, would you have one account to submit the story with and then another to reply to the story with? :)

I'm curious!

romland··on About CSS corners
Yeah, in the comparisons they did, IE definitely came out on top. But I didn't really have a problem with the attitude of the post, "look at our shitty implementation" is not really worth writing home about.
romland··on Using close script tag In A JavaScript Literal
Sorry, deleted that comment before I saw your reply. As I read the whole article I realized that I had nothing interesting to add to it. :)

And absolutely, CDATA is a solution for that scenario.

For the curious, what I blurted out before reading the whole thing:

HTML rules where the script is, of course it would also decide where it ends -- without having to parse the javascript. As for XSS, if you are vulnerable to this one, you are probably vulnerable to other nifty tricks as well.

If you -really- need to use the /script tag, then most people know that the cheap hack is to just: alert("</scr"+"ipt>");

romland··on AMD Contest: What Would You Do With 48 Cores?
I need 42 to find the answer to the Ultimate Question,

the 43rd to satisfy the nerd,

the 44th to find north,

the 45th to bust a myth,

and the 46th idles because nothing rhymes with it

... and well, you finish it.

romland··on Ask HN: Review my mockup tool: WireframeSketcher
I haven't seen any Mockup-products coming out recently, care to share some links?

Personally I'm not too interested in having IDE integration so...

romland··on Ask HN: How many of you founders are girls ?
I never intended for this comment to get to this level of ugliness. It doesn't really matter now, but my intention with it was merely meant as a piece of advice rather than an attack on OP's persona.

I realize this is bordering towards something that might still be slightly taboo, but over the years online I have developed a slight allergy towards women (or others pretending to be women) who use the very fact that they are a woman as a leverage to get something rather than by merit. And hold on before you judge me. My comment came from the fact that OP might not want to come across as that type of person here or anywhere, in my eyes, or anyone elses. So it was a friendly advice.

But when all is said and done, this got way off topic + a bit nasty and for that I apologize.

romland··on IE9 to be GPU-accelerated
UI polishing is generally one of the last things you slap on before shipping. That is, unless the release is all about UI.
romland··on Ask HN: How many of you founders are girls ?
Call me silly, but self-proclaimed hotness (your sig*) might work very well in WoW, but I imagine less so here.

If I were you I'd change it.

(sig: Hot + Geek = me)

romland··on IE9 rendering engine available for testing
I find myself respecting Microsoft more and more of late (say the last year or so). It really is starting to feel as if they are reaching out from their closet and is realizing that they have to cooperate with the rest of the world. I guess you could argue that is a natural side-effect of not being the biggest bully on the block in every market are in (or enter).

An example of what I mean is the fact that on this Microsoft site you actually see images* of other browsers (gasp -- FF, Opera, Chrome all exist) in places where it's not necessary at all. This is something that caught me a bit by surprise.

(I guess I will now get all kinds of anecdotal evidence that they have been doing things like this all along or are downright evil. Point still stands: I am starting to get a bit more respect for the company, and not only the new IE team)

Edit: When reading the other threads on the IE9 topic I realize I might be pretty alone in feeling this way :)

romland··on Is China actually bankrupt?
I just tried it with a few configurations. And I can conclude that it's not just you.

With Chrome and VS2008 with a project open I at least get the Solution Explorer refreshes you described. I don't have time to investigate further right now but my first reaction was that it was a bit scary that a webpage would be able to influence a separate application like that... But a more likely scenario is that VS has hooked up a debugger to the thread and it triggers this behavior.

I don't have any experience with .NET on the web, so I can't say for sure. But I am for sure going to bookmark this and have a look at it later.

Thanks! :)

romland··on Now A No-Evil Zone
I don't consider the comparison wrong in this context. We are talking about Operating Systems here. Not phones.

In other contexts it might be wrong, however.

romland··on Fed up with Mahalo's search engine spam? Report it here
While I agree that the number of people reporting this may be less than you think, linking to that Wikipedia article is a bit overly dramatic, isn't it? It's about playing some algorithm on some website...
romland··on Why Ad Blocking is devastating to the sites you love
Absolutely.

Amazingly this trust has worked well enough for television and radio (and its advertisers) for decades.

romland··on Microsoft Small Basic
From screenshot:

  "Press to stop game"
Funny how much sense that makes in a twisted way. I was thinking that they had some kind of functionality that had you attach text to a keyboard event to explain it. Alas.

  GraphicsWindow.DrawText(x, y + 320, "Press to stop game")
It's just a ... feature.

Edit: and the key they hooked up "stop game" to was not space, it was escape :(

romland··on Why Ad Blocking is devastating to the sites you love
If ads are discreet and respectful of the viewer then I'd certainly be prepared to stop blocking them.

I can only speak for myself but a solution does not seem that far off (at least not to get me to see your ads). While I agree that some sort of code of conduct may be a good idea, I don't really see it working out in the long run what with everyone always being willing to sacrifice good will for a quick buck.

That said, I use NoScript in Firefox and I run it for other reasons than blocking advertisements and I don't have an ad-blocker installed. If I white list a website it means I made a deliberate choice to trust whatever it is going to throw at me. The most important thing here is that I did not allow any third party to serve me some random code (plain markup is fine). I have no way of telling whether the site I just white listed in fact knows what their external advertisers actually serve. And this is proven again and again by how site owners expect visitors to contact the site when they see an ad that is intrusive so that they can "nuke it". This to me makes it a no deal.

To kill two birds with one stone: Serve your advertisements from your own servers and if I want to read your content I have to make a choice whether to trust you and your webserver(s). If you violate my trust then I will go elsewhere and I am no longer a waste of your resources and you are not a waste of mine.

If I have for some reason decided to not let you run dynamic content on whatever device I am currently on you simply have to respect that or I leave. You still have the opportunity to serve me static ads, surely that's got to be worth something. You don't know my reasons for not white listing you (as this article states as well). What surprised me about this link was that I did not see a single advertisement on the page. This means they are all using JavaScript or Flash. Sorry, your loss. And eventually my loss as well since the website might not live to see another day due to lack of income.

Incidentally, easy white listing [of script execution] for sites is also the only thing stopping me from switching to Chrome today.

romland··on ReMail (YC W09) is now Open Source
From the post about the actual acquisition there was, if I recall correctly, agreed that this was more about the talent rather than the software itself.

And who knows, perhaps they had a future product coming up that Google was interested in.

romland··on Rapportive - making excellent service scale
Call me silly for running NoScript in this day and age of Javascript on every page but it's not often that I get a moment of "WTF" when visiting a site.

This one gave me just that. Took me a scroll down the page, then up again, then halfway towards pressing backspace... Then I remembered! Whitelist NoScript temporarily!

Normally this comes pretty naturally to me because I can easily spot that a site is depending on Javascript or not.

So my mileage varied.

romland··on Portal Puzzles by Valve
Wow to the puzzle solvers.

On a side note or two; I so loved this game. It was the first game in many many years that I actually played to the end. In hindsight I also like the fact that Valve has not oversold the (to be?) franchise. But now I am ready for a sequel. There is a cake!

Now, all I need is time to actually play it...

romland··on Apple Sues Nexus One Maker HTC
The deeper the pocket is, the further away the oblivion is.
romland··on I was the one who came forward about the Macbook Air
If you wanted to sway me into disagreeing with parent's post, then you pretty much failed. Your post came across as pretty insincere. Sorry to say.

And this: If you can do a story about Open Angel Forum on Thursday and get it to the top slot on HN I will gladly give you an Apple Tablet.

Always an agenda, eh. Even if the event is news-worthy (and organization good), together with the rest of your post it certainly made me sneer.

romland··on Rupert Murdoch ready to sue Google?
You get moderated downwards for that comment? What is this, Slashdot?
romland··on How I reduced translation costs of 200 articles from $9000 to $46
Not only that, should this catch on, you can bet your ass that people will give you crap translations on purpose by throwing in various vulgarities.

Then we go to next step: You hire someone to proof-read. Well, at this point you've already lost -- either you do it cheaply within the community (who all chuckle at what gets delivered) or you go to a professional...

Credits to the early adopters, though. They might actually get some value. But this will not last more than a month or two -- at least not (as you say) at this price level..

As time goes by you will just get more and more Babelfish translations. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if 50% of what he got now was in fact that.

romland··on Accelerating SQL[ite] Database Operations on a GPU with CUDA [pdf]
Heh. When I first saw the document I thought there is no way I am going to read all that now. Surprisingly, the sections that I did end up reading were quite easy to digest (and it's 5am here). I recommend bookmarking it and reading it later if you can't do it now. This is genuinely interesting.

The gem which you might be looking for is:

The queries executed on the GPU were an average of 35X faster than those executed through the serial SQLite virtual machine.

(my apologies to authors for reducing the entire document to that)

romland··on Facebook has surpassed Google.com (just visits, just USA)
Link bait or irrelevant -- not sure which.

...add google.COM.

romland··on Time to reset some passwords
Agreed. As far as I know my password has been "stolen" once in my life -- and that was due to a compromised shell at my ISP. And that's the kicker: _as far as I know_. All the other times (should there be any) I just wouldn't know because I didn't care.

And now that I read back my comment, it kind of looks as if I was just trying to take a cheap stab at your comment. It wasn't the case. I genuinely spent a moment to think about whether there would be a viable solution to the problem at this level. :) Now, getting rid of passwords altogether...

(I dislike people who say you can't solve this -- and here I go doing it myself!)

romland··on Time to reset some passwords
Don't reuse your passwords. You've heard it repeated over and over again. I do believe that is the solution.

Now, of course, I do reuse. But other than the above I just don't see a solution to this particular problem. Filtering both the username and password in the logs? It wouldn't make -me- feel any safer when I log onto that Xbox hacker forum. I worry about the administrator of the site having access to my passwords. Not any possible hackers that might wander by.

PS. There are tools out there that will fill in username and password depending on URL. Of course, that gives another attack vector...

romland··on Show HN: My project for this weekend (with source)
Taking this WAY off topic ...

One could argue that it's language related! Thanks for your answer.:)

romland··on Ask HN: Review my Startup
You use Javascript to create that button, it will not show up if you have NoScript. It's not even clickable. Just letting you know. :)

(yes, I was confused too)

Edit: And to be honest, if you are asking for feedback it would probably be a nice idea to just nod and smile at peoples advice instead of getting into some kind of argument as to "what people think". Most people here are ... err, people too. :)

romland··on Ask HN: What's up with performance?
Maybe we take unrestrained pleasure in news for hackers on Valentine's Day. :)

Hmm. But no, it's not just you.
