romeoEtJoliet··on Buy Low-Tops, Sell High-Tops: StockX Sneaker Exchange Is Worth $1B
I think it actually goes both ways. They might have been initially incredibly popular and subsequently Nike flooded the market with the sneaker to the point that it ended up on clearance shelves (https://solecollector.com/news/2017/04/air-jordan-1-og-sales...). The article also mentions that Nike targeted ~3-4 million pairs of the sneaker, which is relatively high for a hyped sneaker. For a modern comparison, this article (https://thesolesupplier.co.uk/news/heres-stock-numbers-off-w...) claims only ~48k pairs of last year's hyped Off-White x Nike Blazer Mid ‘Black’ sneaker were released.
romeoEtJoliet··on The Rise of the WeWorking Class
In NYC (WeWork's home turf), it's not uncommon to see a jump of £500-£1000 with increasing bedrooms so maybe that factors into their prices. For example, my apartment building has ~ $2400 studios, $3000 1brs, and $4000 2brs.
romeoEtJoliet··on Harried South Koreans pamper pets instead of having kids
For 2) a country could implement economic incentives in the form of a graduated tax penalty for each 'missing' child under the country's replacement rate, and a tax credit for each registered dependent counting towards the rate with the taxes from the former supporting a program to fund childcare, fertility treatments, a parental stipend, etc.
romeoEtJoliet··on The Best Skin-Care Trick: Be Rich
There's more to skin-care than skin aging - some women struggle with acne for hormonal reasons and as a side effect, blemishes.

Sunscreen is also incredibly useful to prevent sun damage, and moisturizers can prevent deep lines later in life.

None of which is to say that people need to spend an arm and a leg on skin care products, but finding skin-care that works for you might be costly

(e.g., finding a moisturizer that is light enough for daily use, a daily sunscreen that doesn't make your face look metallic from zinc, a non-prescription retinoid available in a container that won't oxidize readily).

romeoEtJoliet··on Tempe Police Release Video of Uber Accident
There have been studies that indicate that these sorts of technology (lane keeping/departure warning, auto-brake, blind spot detection) help reduce collisions.

Personally, I don't think that it's right to dismiss these systems entirely if they provide some level of safety benefit, are cheaper and easier than level 5 autonomous vehicles to develop and / or deploy.

romeoEtJoliet··on Ask HN: What would you pay $10,000 for right now?
I'm aware of luxury services that provide similar services, but I would pay 10k for a matchmaking service that could guarantee a lifetime connection with partner.

It could be a service that goes the extra mile in terms of discovery to find someone compatible in terms of values, interests and hobbies, etc.

romeoEtJoliet··on Tokyo to build 350m tower made of wood
The reason why Roppongi Hills took 18 years was because much of that time was spent acquiring lots from 400 smaller property owners. The construction of Mori tower itself took ~3 years.

This proposal does seem more marketing like marketing than a serious attempt to construct a building in that neither the website nor press release mentioning the location that the tower will be built (Marunouchi).(http://sfc.jp/information/news/2018/2018-02-08.html) (http://sfc.jp/english/news/pdf/20180214_e_01.pdf)

Another difference to me is the lack of cabs. When comparing this shot: https://youtu.be/fT4lDU-QLUY?t=127 and any number of Google Maps images of the same location (looking North towards St. Patrick's) https://www.google.com/maps/@40.756666,-73.9786279,3a,75y,27... it's striking how there are way more black cars and fewer taxis today.
romeoEtJoliet··on Amazon, Apple, Google and Facebook will all go away within 50 years, says author
It's true that Apple has mountains of cash, but in all likelihood, a failing Apple-sized tech giant would end up acquired by an adjacent company (see Motorola or Yahoo or Sun Microsystems ) before they ran out of money.

Does anyone have any recommendations for YouTube channels that focus on reverse engineering?
romeoEtJoliet··on The 1980 Citroën Karin
I think you're probably right. The headlamp shape leads me to believe that the blue car is a Citroen Xanae prototype (http://www.citroenet.org.uk/prototypes/xanae/xanae.html), an MPV prototype/predecessor for the Picasso.
