romanhn··on The shortest, strangest engineering interview I've ever done
The first mistake was not tossing the application after "Yes, I'm the best". If this is the vibe he's putting out at a time when first impressions are being made, not sure why you'd expect anything different later. This played out very unsurprisingly for me (though I gotta say, I haven't seen that level of negging from a candidate before). Perhaps there are shades of Nigerian scams here: "if they eat up my original ridiculous message, I bet I can get away with more."
romanhn··on The real "Wolf of Wall Street" sales script
You know, I'm with you. Yet - I once had an ISP rep (Sonic) show up at my door letting me know that they're setting up 10Gbps fiber in the neighborhood and if I'm interested in getting 10x speed (was already on 1Gbps fiber from AT&T) at less than half the cost. I signed up on the spot, and I'm no stranger to saying no. So I suppose it's all about playing the numbers game looking for the right customer for that pitch.
romanhn··on How is everyone managing user authentication for their platform?
I'm using Firebase Auth for my side project. Pretty easy to get started and has generous free limits. I went with Google Auth and passwordless email links. SMS auth would start getting expensive very quick, especially with international users.
romanhn··on No Salt
While I understand your general point, this right here is one of the reasons why I'd strongly prefer cremation for myself. Knowingly subjecting friends and family to this feels... selfish, and probably traumatic for them to boot.
romanhn··on Ask HN: I can't grok front end development
Came here to recommend Tailwind as well. It simplifies styling a ton and works really well with component-based frameworks such as React. It's somewhat controversial in that it throws away certain key aspects of CSS, but in your case that sounds like an extra bonus.
romanhn··on Ask HN: What do you think should be taught in a great Computer Science degree?
Most of these (except maybe OS specifics) were taught in my CS degree two decades ago. I'd be surprised to see the curriculum change drastically since then, as these are pretty foundational topics. That said, different universities have different approaches, so perhaps worth it to keep looking.

That said, the order of courses wasn't "from first principles". We shared with programming foundations (via SICP), then data structures, and only then machine structures.

romanhn··on Paper cuttings made by 17th-century schoolgirls discovered beneath floorboards
Earlier thread: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41045233
romanhn··on Ask HN: How can I oversee an e-com website development?
For people management, The Manager's Path by Camille Fournier is fantastic. That said, managing an offshore team (that also sounds junior) is going to create many headaches in addition to those you'll normally face as a first-time manager. Good luck!
romanhn··on Attention HN: What's the Best Way to Find a Good Dev for Your Startup?
This is exactly it. I've been in tech for over 20 years and don't think I know a single developer with a portfolio. I can imagine new grads and consulting devs having one, but that's a shallow pool and probably not one OP intends to limit the search to.
romanhn··on Ask HN: Thoughts on shadow banning and other dick moves by Silicon Valley?
Did you delete your submission? Hard to say what the issue was without seeing it.
romanhn··on How do I share posts in the "Show" section?
Looks like your submission currently has a [dead] status, most likely flagged for being spam.

Show HN is for showing your own work, something you've built. That's not the case here, as you are marketing an existing company that has employees (of which you seem to be one). HN readers have an aversion to blatant advertising so I wouldn't recommend that strategy here. Finally, your submission title implies that you made this product, which I think is misleading.

romanhn··on Joe Biden stands down as Democratic candidate
Stories too - all the other flagged dupes at the time showed the vouch option while this one didn't. I suspect this thread got auto-moderated as spam and therefore vouch wasn't available since it could be used to circumvent the moderation. Whereas the user-flagged stories were all vouchable.
romanhn··on Joe Biden stands down as Democratic candidate
Here's what @dang posted on the giant thread of Biden winning presidency (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25015967). I suspect this thread has been auto-killed by some spam algo and there's a good chance dang will resurrect it at some point.

"As many have pointed out, a dozen or so submissions on this topic were flagged by users. That's actually the immune system working as intended, but another component of the system is that moderators rescue the very most historic stories so HN can have a single big thread about them. We did that 4 years ago, also for Brexit, etc.

Since this was the first submission on the topic, it seems fairest to be the one to restore. (It's still on our todo list to have some form of karma sharing for situations like this, to make it be less of a race and/or lottery.)"

romanhn··on Joe Biden stands down as Democratic candidate
This thread would disagree: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25015967
romanhn··on Joe Biden stands down as Democratic candidate
100%. Biden becoming president was one of the biggest HN threads, very odd to see this thread killed.
romanhn··on What is the significance of the character "j" at the end of a Roman Numeral? (2013)
Interestingly, the OED disagrees with this (quite reasonably sounding) origin theory of lieutenant: https://www.grammarphobia.com/blog/2015/02/lieutenant.html
romanhn··on Meta Quest mobile app is getting a new name and look
Looks like Meta is going all in on the Horizon brand. Tying VR to Social across all channels, Google+ style.
romanhn··on Ask HN: Meta can't recover account if it was faceless
Unfortunately, asking Meta employees is not going to help - they're not allowed to. I've written about it previously: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40433730
romanhn··on Making Elizabethan plays understandable and fun to read
I find this very interesting. I'm not a native English speaker but I would say I have native level proficiency. I just finished (literally yesterday) going through about 20 of Shakespeare's plays. Moreover, I did it in the audiobook format, where I didn't just have to follow the story, but also constantly figure out who's speaking. This wasn't a walk in the park and I had to familiarize myself with each play before listening to it. But - I found most of it perfectly understandable and often relatable. A fascinating difference in experience.
romanhn··on DevRel at HuggingFace
If you were to tell your CEO you're reducing page load time, they will rightfully ask you why and what problem you're solving. The objective is the simple sentence that makes the "why" clear. It might itself be subordinate to a higher level objective. The idea is that all work is clearly aligned to specific goals in a very transparent manner.

It's actually a very solid framework, but as the many comments indicate, poor implementations abound (also see Agile, DevOps, etc).

romanhn··on DevRel at HuggingFace
I'd say it's more than that. OKRs are a concrete framework that came out of Intel and was popularized by Google. But yes, the focus is on setting objectives backed by measurable results.

Can be a document, an app, whatever. One flavor is objectives are set at the top, their KRs are translated into objectives for the next management layer with their own KRs, and so on. It's an iterative process with some combination of top-down and bottoms-up activities. And afterwards, the results are reviewed. There's more to it, but that's the gist.

romanhn··on Show HN: Resurrecting a dead Dune RTS game
The original C&C was in fact based on Dune II, the OG RTS game that came out in 1992. The cutscenes from Dune II are still burned into my memory, what a great game it was.
romanhn··on Ask HN: Vision Pro owners, are you still using it?
There was a thread about it three weeks ago: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40660270
romanhn··on Ask HN: I am Software Engineer 30yo and I feel purposeless
I've burnt out on work multiple times and it's not fun, but to be honest the first paragraph is not how it felt at all. The word burnout didn't even come to mind until I read the other comments. At the risk of armchair diagnosis, it sounds like it could be depression. It is worth bringing up with a professional. Wish you the best, hope you get through it, whatever it is.
romanhn··on [dead]
Having a "Don't fill this out if you're human" field on forms is brilliant. Never seen that before.
romanhn··on Netflix wants managers to ask whether they would rehire their employees
That's not true at all. I've never worked there and have heard of the keeper test for years, ever since the culture memo leaked in 2009. Here's an article from 2010 about it: https://www.shrm.org/topics-tools/news/hr-magazine/tough-lov.... The company's culture page has mentioned it ever since its first iteration in 2017 (per Wayback Machine).
romanhn··on Ask HN: Do you need a distributed transactional database?
The first tell is the "here's a bunch of bullet points on the topic" format which is classic ChatGPT. The second tell is that it is a generic comment that doesn't actually answer OP's question about concrete uses of distributed DBs. The third tell is that this person keeps submitting clear LLM output despite getting called out multiple times on it.
romanhn··on Netflix wants managers to ask whether they would rehire their employees
The keeper test has been at Netflix forever. This is very much a non-story.
romanhn··on Ask HN: When does shadow ban get removed?
I see a non-dead comment from you, so it doesn't look like you're shadow banned. I do see that you posted the same comment three times across three accounts on a thread, so that's definitely not behavior that is encouraged here. I'm guessing your original comment got flagged (maybe by humans, maybe not - no clue) and you attempted to re-post from other accounts which likely marked your posts as spam.

As mentioned in the sibling comment, reaching out to the moderator is the best way to figure it out.

Update: the thread seems to have fallen off the Ask HN page very quickly so there does seem to be some penalty applied.

romanhn··on React Lua
Fascinating. Haven't heard of these despite coding for 30 years. Probably because I started with Pascal.
