roma1n··on Bitcoin, Bitcoin cash, ethereum and litecoin crash on Friday December 22
Without more explanation, 'put my faith in logic and mathenatics instead of a person or institution' sounds like an empty statement to me. You are still betting on your belief that other human beings will want to buy bitcoins over time. Economics is about human beings in the end.
roma1n··on Don't get caught up in blockchain hype
I may be misinformed, but I see proof of work schemes as something that will inevitably lead to a tremendous waste of energy -- the last thing we should do if we still want to inhabit this planet in a few decades. If a centralized authority is needed to reduce this waste, then so be it.
roma1n··on Gerbil – An opinionated dialect of Scheme designed for systems programming
For the uninitiated, how does this compare to guile?
roma1n··on I don’t know who the Web Audio API is designed for
I briefly tried Web Audio to implement a Karplus-Strong synthesizer (about the simplest thing in audio synthesis I guess?).

Without using ScriptProcessorNode, there was no way of tuning the synthesizer because of the limitation that any loop in the audio graph has a 128 samples delay at least.

Maybe a more "compilation-oriented" handling of the audio graphs (at the user's choice) could help overcome this?

roma1n··on Stop trying to ‘be original’ and be prolific instead (2016)
Aaaaand that's when socialized health-care, good public shcools and good public transportation saves the day. Come to France!
roma1n··on Is Microsoft boiling the users to death, by not boiling the experts?
I had the same feeling when Ubuntu introduced sponsored search.
roma1n··on Pornhub Bypasses Ad Blockers with WebSockets
You can actually do both. I have a subscription to lemonde.fr and I also block ads (which are particularly aggravating on mobile); that is simply good hygiene
roma1n··on Let's build coolest web components purely in CSS, NO JavaScript
Do you have to manually add a list item for each slider tick? Really clever, but I hope I'll never end up as the poor sap who has to maintain this kind of code.
roma1n··on Refactoring a 300-line if
Is the logic equivalent though? In the initial example, there were at least four outcomes (post, notify not a member, notify not a posting member, notify group closed) which seems too many to map on a boolean.
roma1n··on I found my father living on the street
Her dad apparently made a great recovery; the sad thing is that the event that made it possible is a heart attack, i.e. an organic condition. Shows how little society cares about mental illness IMHO (although free will issues have been pointed out)
roma1n··on US ventures aimed at helping the unbanked are taking cues from developing world
Compte-Nickel, a French operation, has a basic package available that includes a debit card, IBAN number (to receive or wire funds) for 20 euros/year. No other fees since there is no possibility of being overdraft. Payments are free, although ATM withdrawals are paid (something like 2 euros/withdrawal). It can be bought from tobacconist's stores and refilled there. An ID is required but nothing else (so it is available to homeless people). Overall seems like an interesting, non-preying offer.
roma1n··on The Lonely Death of George Bell
Really? Before socialized welfare, your place within the community was entirely tied to your working ability. Too old to farm? Go sleep under the stairs. Then take a walk in the forest in winter and don't come back.
roma1n··on Red Hat is buying Ansible
I haven't seen conditionals or loops widely used within Maven's XML.
roma1n··on Paris Is Sharing Electric Cars by the Thousand—Will It Play in Indianapolis?
There is an issue with the battery technology though. AFAIK these cars must stay plugged and draw power when not in use to keep the battery above 70C.
roma1n··on Tiny, dirty, iffy, good enough, basic multi-threaded web crawler in Python
Nice to see a tiny, useful code example.
roma1n··on AdBlock Plus wins in court
Why would a piece of software on my machine needlessly be under remote control ?
roma1n··on Testing the 12-inch MacBook's Performance with Windows 10
While we're talking about windows, any advice on how to make it developer friendly outside of .net? (Say for people whose main tools are bash, vi and a compiler)
roma1n··on Serving All Your Heroin Needs
This was done on purpose? I have seen paracetamol/tramadol combinations to get a synergistic effect (not sure that it works though). But what is the rationale here? "You got an addiction problem, so we're going to fuck your liver while we're at it" ?
roma1n··on Why We Are No Longer Developing for the iPad
Just out of curiosity: is using IntelliJ on the HP Stream a good experience? Considering a similar purchase (chromebook C720p) but afraid of performance issues...
roma1n··on Ask HN: How do I become a faster programmer?
To gain speed, I'd say get extremely familiar with whatever standard library your language/platform of choice uses.

Disclaimer: I am not a fast programmer.

roma1n··on Things I've learned about writing software after 12 years
Yup. How a DO-178-like integrity level is not mandatory for medical devices is troubling.
roma1n··on Shitphone: A Love Story
We could have shitphones.

Or, you know, do what Google did with the Moto G: unspectacular but very usable hardware, no crufty software layer above the OS, at a good price point.

roma1n··on Java Runtime updater now installs ask.com toolbar on Macs
Whoa... Stay classy, Oracle.
roma1n··on Brands pay Twitter to falsely appear in your following list
Someone suggested to report every 'promoted tweet' (ad) as unwanted/spam. That's what I do currently.
roma1n··on Look, no hands
Sure, have a look at ICon (for instance) if you want to add custom input devices to your setup : http://inputconf.sourceforge.net/
roma1n··on Doing Business in Japan
Also the janitor adds lots of concrete, measurable value. Avoiding half of the company getting sick and/or quitting? Check.
roma1n··on The Hypercard Legacy
I'm no android fanboy (I find their development environment heavy and full of boilerplate) but I would like to see their intent/activity model replicated elsewhere. Using an android phone or tablet, you really see app symbiosis (a task may be fulfilled by many applications, dispatch happens at runtime and is user-driven)
roma1n··on Accidental release of 45L of polio virus solution into the environment – Belgium
Plus a trainee nurse inadvertently killed a patient in France two weeks ago through direct KCl injection. There is now a move to remove all KCl vials and replace them with pre-diluted pouches.
roma1n··on Poor UI Design Can Kill – Air Inter Flight 148, a Harsh Lesson Learned
As the article points out, there are other factors involved in this accident. IIRC, Air Inter did not equip its fleet with GPWS, for instance.
roma1n··on The 30-year-old health sector billionaire
Sure, but that particular ship sailed a long time ago. Most patients track their INR from the lab and simply ask when it swings too much.
